yin999 MHHornfreak Yay jazz rehearsal tomorrow! awesome, wish I could play jazz, I'm working on it though...What do you recomend learning before diving into that stuff? If you want to also do improv., I recommend Jamey Abersold books. I've had 3 private teachers and a band director who have praised those books. Try listening to more jazz music, that often helps in getting the feel.

OMG scream scream
If you don't like rants, don't read the following.
SOMEONE GIVE ME A FREAKIN' GUN! This bratty freshman is driving me insane! I called a half hour section rehearsal afterschool next week, and this idiot is like, "I'm not goin' to that! That's a waste of time." So I'm like, "Uh, no, it's mandatory and you're going. No questions asked." And he's like, "Make me!" Oh my gosh, what the hell is wrong with him?! So in a little bit I go ask my director, "Hey, if we call a rehearsal afterschool, everyone has to go, right?" And he's like, "Yeah, you should take roll and give me a list of who doesn't show up." So I go over and tell the brat, "I asked the director, and yes, you do have to come, or you will get a detention." So he goes, "Tattletale! Tattletale!" in the most ittle kiddish way possible. Gosh, I'm going to strangle that kid. For the record, I honestly don't give a crap if anyone thinks I'm a "tattletale" (Does anyone above the age of 10 even use that word? rolleyes ). Everyone is sucking at the march and they need to get better, and if that means me getting a reputation as a band Nazi, so be it. But OMFG, I AM GOING TO SHOOT THAT LITTLE BRAT IN THE FACE. HOLY CRAP. WHAT A LITTLE IDIOT. scream scream scream

I can swing 8th notes pretty well...me and a few of the other good alto players swung our entire marching show once, just because they never hear us xd
anyway, just found out today that I basically can't even try to make it to state this year...Apparently I have to either try out for only 4A region, or try out against the 5A's and try to make state...Yah, I'm sure that doesn't make since, but basically i have to choices-
-take a risk, go up against harder competition, but have a chance to go farther
-or go up against easier competition, but if I do well, I might regret it cuz I won't move on...
But right now I honestly don't know what to do, because I don't know how good I'm am compared to the other schools players...hmmm..

Well if you got the whole swing feel down then all you have to do is work on your improv. All-State jazz is fun but you can really go far elsewhere just playing jazz in general if your a very good soloist.

On a sidenote, an advantage to having a neck strap is that we don't drop our instruments as often as other people. lol
