No RP related, but gaia related in general. In the avatar arenas, the cosplay one is where I'm seeing one trend. People assuming you already know the character and leave no reference image or tell you to google it. Then when you comment them on what they could improve... they get all snippy on you.
I commented on a Cheza entry for this week, asking for a reference image and telling a few items they could change like the eyes. They were red with black crosses in them. I said that they looked odd, and to try a different eye.
In short they said, "Well her eyes are all red and these were the ONLY eyes I could find." It just sounded snippy, I added on that there were better ones with shape and mostly red.
Another thing is in the orginal arena... when does the cost of an avatar's items effect the score?

For the original? Well it's not about how well you put it together or how nice it looks. It all matters on the fact you have a butt load of costly items that others want.

Yeah I have my current... with shorter hair in the arena right now and have a 3.20 average when I last checked but nobody's telling me WHY.

RP guilds with no instructions.
I mean if you're new to the guild you read the rules right? And the rules tell you what to do and what not to do and have a nice guide of how things work.
I was invited to a guild with just some minor RPing rules of no auto hitting and activity. So I was incredibly lost. I asked the person who had invited me of how to start. She told me do a profile and sort of post a promo and post around in a backroom or something. Even in the 'rules' they say that promos are the best way to get noticed, so I did.
Then today I see that the promo I made was deleted. So now I'm really lost and there's no real place to just chat. It's all business there and I feel so...out of the loop I can't even find.

...that reminds me. I own seven guilds. I intend on getting far more than that. In fact, I've already established one as a headquarters-type thing to center them all.
If that's not an empire, I don't know what is.
(Though, most of them are empty. I have yet to gather the time and devotion to properly establish them.)

How about a monopoly.
Anyhow riding the back of my last post. I did ask about how things worked there and commented on how businesslike it felt.
The captain I guess said that he liked to keep it organized and gave me a link to another guild that contain the guide that they had been following.
My mind went "du-huh?" Then the slightly ticked off alienated -I don't give a damn who I piss off now because I'm so not going to stick around for this crap- part of me replied
"So the guide that you all go by is in a completely different guild? And there's no real way for new people to know about it other than the little note at the bottom of the guild home page about how this guild approves of that guild?"
Yeah I can see that I'm not sticking around at all.

Be warned, this is my rant.
I don't understand why people must use real life photos for characters. Actors I understand, but just a regular teenager (well either emo or scene) just irks me. That and if your RP is realistic, but you require all the people to use photos of famous people, doesn't that limit the type of conversations that can happen about movies and such if your characters ARE that actor by picture. Plus if they are just normal teens... wouldn't you feel odd using a picture of a kid that could live just down the street?
Case in point, I saw a picture of one of my friends in middle school being used in a RP. To me that felt odd. Also, that makes for 'self insertion- characters if you use your own photos that much more possible.

In a way you can take that as flattery. They like her looks so much that they wish to use her image. Although if they add a description that's rather uncomplimentary to go with the image then I think it's time to rage.
But over all why not just use your own picture or describe what the person looks like?

I personally find it creepy. True there are many overused anime pictures, but I know that they are just characters with either no past or one that I just don't know about. Yes I understand actors, models and other type people put their pictures out on the internet. It's just weird to me. -shrug- If anybody can explain the apeal then I'll keep to my personal rant about pants that sag past a person's a** (Pardon my French) when it is against the dress code that is posted in every class room. -shrug- I call them out on it when I see they have a belt and even when they don't. It's gross to see a person's underwear like that.

I won't argue that one. When a guy's pants starts at the back of his knees I just want to kick him so bad.
Though I know I wouldn't post my picture up with every post. Even if I do post my picture the link it up for a couple of days max then it's gone. I don't like showing them off. But another reason is because of how shallow people are.
I once saw this picture of a lovely girl she was thick, yes, but her shape was beautiful and to die for and she was fashionable.
But people just kept calling her fat, some were nice and said she looked pretty but she'd look better if she lost weight. Some where just asses and kept going on and on about how 'fat' she was. And I've seen fat and what she was wasn't fat.

Peeves I have...
Well, For one. I hate it when people post pictures in every post. To be perfectly honest, I don't even like pictures in general because nine times out of ten, The picture people use depicts a char from an Anime, a Video game, or a fringe character no one knows, that isn't your own. The only real way to show people who you are is by drawing a picture yourself, and very very few people actually do that. I'll admit, Pictures are fine for giving an idea of what your char looks like, but even so. Beyond that first post, it has no place beside your posts. Your not the person in the picture. If you have any originality, you're different from it. Meh. In short, I don't like threads that rely on pictures and there is an ABUNDANCE of them. I like using my IMAGINATION. *rainbow*
Second. I don't mind illiterate people. If they were never very good at spelling or writing, that's perfectly fine. I won't hold that against anyone. But this site DOES revolve around writing, and if you wanna post, you should at least make the attempt to get better at it, or spell check your posts, or do SOMETHING. Posts like this...
"i went t the store and talkd to u. Ther wuz cat on d way."
Drives me up the wall. I'm not a stickler. You can misspell something, make a grammatical error, and stuff like that. It's understandable and acceptable. As long as it was an ERROR. Not every post should be that way! =_=
Third. This one takes some explaining. There are threads out there that tie in with other threads. Like, One will be in Barton and one Durem, and people will switch between the threads and tie the RPs together. There are plenty of threads like that.
Recently, I've grown very annoyed with people who hop from thread to thread every two to three days. They come to one thread, stir up huge stuff RP wise, then skip off and leave the rest of us hanging like "Wtf? Do we... do we go back to what we were doing...?" Then by the time you're done clearing that up... THE PERSON IS BACK ALREADY AND DOING IT AGAIN. o_O That's BS.
Fourth. People who start threads... then don't stick around to see it through. If you start a thread and despite your attempts, it stays pretty inactive... That's okay. I can understand that. But when you start a thread, people start posting, and suddenly you're missing completely and forever? That's a jerk move. It really is.
That's all I can think of off the bat. Gimmie time and I'll add more.

I'm a grammar nut, since I have had some published work, and a jerk, so I can't resist. Slait, you are guilty of your own second peeve. You misused 'your' four times. 'Your' reflects possession. Your four misuses should have been 'you are' or its contraction.
That aside, I agree with you. Character pictures have no place in a roleplay unless they are drawn specifically for that character. So you can't draw? Okay. That's fine. I'm sure there are plenty of artists that would be willing to do some pro bono work if they can slap their signature on the drawing and use you for advertising. I even know of a few video games that have facial construction software that will allow you to create even a broad idea of what your character looks like. A handy little text based edit near the picture can solve any inaccuracies that the game can't change for whatever reason, like eye or hair color.
Why must people use pictures of real life people? Easy answer to that. And it's the same answer to why people use the same worn out anime pictures: Because the creator(s) of the roleplay let them. Whenever I run a game, regardless of whether it is for pen and paper or is text based, I allow the option of using a picture. Generic pictures of animals or objects, such as a black canine, are perfectly fine. If the picture is of a person or an easily identifiable animal, such as Brad Pitt or a black canine with a white star on its forehead, then I ask two immensely destructive questions. The second question only applies if they answered yes to the first question.
1) Did you ask the permission of the person in the picture and/or the photographer or artist that made it? 2) Where is your proof?
If the person can't provide me with proof that they either are the photographer/artist or that they have permission, then I require that they change the character's appearance. I've only ever had one person gripe about that requirement, and she changed her tune the very moment that I explained that I do it to protect the rights of the person in the picture and the rights of the person that made the picture. After all, would you enjoy it if someone 'borrowed' one of your characters, or you, without your permission and used it for their own profit? I've been in that position, and I say no.

I've actually been making that mistake for a long time, and since I never use "You're" that much, I suppose it keeps slipping my mind. =P No one's perfect. I will however reiterate that the peeve regards people who don't even make the effort to show at least a minor amount of skill. I try to make every post as legible as possible even when I'm not paying much attention, and even with those errors in my last post, I'd like to think that it was at least readable. Not going for any writing award, just trying to get the point across which I think I've done. wink

I don't mind the pictures. I hate the over used ones. I am guilty of using them in a RP and I have posted with the image in each or the name in the header due to the fact that I had to RP more than one person to get things going.
What I do hate is when someone puts up a pic then continues to tell the differences in the pic and the way that they imagine their character. For example they put up a picture of Sakura from Naruto since girls tend to do this a lot, then say something along the lines of 'She looks like Sakura except her eyes are gold, her hair is a darker shade of pink and reaches down to her knees. And she has a tiny hairline scar on her cheek that she thinks makes her look ugly so she tries to hide it. But really it gives her character. And she wears a black, gold, and pink outfit like Ino.'
But I have drawn my own pictures before and even then I wasn't too satisfied with them.
I also hate it when a person takes a picture and personality from someone in one anime and then give them the powers of another character from a video game. They don't even try to hide the fact that they were "inspired" by the game they blatantly use it. Thus forcing you to learn up on this game you don't even like. And then when you actually use something useful against them which is totally valid thanks to the game they get pissy and tell you that you can't do that.
