There are a lot of nuances that simply cannot be translated into images and text. You'll never truly know about how you feel about a place before you've been there. That's one of the reasons why people stress about visiting college campuses before deciding to attend.
I disagree in that I don't think one could apply this to everyone. What I was saying is that just because -I- haven't been there doesn't mean that I can't say that I don't like it. Maybe for different people who are different than me it would be a more important thing. In my case, and not mine alone, I don't need to have to been to most places to know if I like them or not.
In the case with locations-- I have seen much of the east coast, I have studied east coast history, I know many east coast people, I know about east coast culture, and I am aware of there is underground culture that I wouldn't know about that isn't mainstream, but I don't and wouldn't ever be part of that that it wouldn't really matter that is there in forming my feelings about the place.
