This wasn't unexpected for Hiru, in what his its were confirmed, he had pretty much accpeted the fact that he was always going to have to work twice as hard as the others to catch up with them, and four times as hard to get ahead. But he was ready to make the effort nevertheless.
"I have got to get it this time", he tried to convince himself.
Focusing really hard, he gave the funny dog a second shot.

"What I wouldn't give for a little strength training right now...", Hiru wondered. Everyone could notice that being indoors wasn't Hiru's element, it was for none of the Hoshigakis for that matter. They longed for the wide open sea, where they had all the room they needed and had a number of very physical, and often extremely cruel, activities. Still, Hiru, for some reason, was ready to do everything necessary to reach his goal.

If Hiru was going to have to try five times to get every symbol right, reaching twelve was going to take him over a week. Plus, that damn itch wasn't going to help him either. What got him especially mad is that he was the only one who got caught, and he was definitely the one who was going to have the hardest time with training. Hiru may have been incredibly determined, but he was still very young nevertheless, and constant failure is hard on anyone this age.

Hiru was getting incredibly desperate things were going so smoothly before and now he didn't even seem like he could get one right. It took him ten tried to get one right and he can't even do a freakin dog. He looked at the picture, maybe he was doing something wrong, he had to be. No one, as stupid as he may be, could fail 5 times a hand sign and only get worse. He tried completely changing his technique, starting from scratch... couldn't really do worse...

(don't give in as yet. You're almost there Hiru. Just start going with something like how his fingers are beginning to hurt.)
If there was one thing Kiketsu would learn at the end of the day was that sheep were tough. Never in his life did the boy would think that he may have to accept that as a fact. After seven tries though, a person will tend to doubt a belief. Still he had to persevere. He was nearing the end of this ordeal. It wouldn't be too long now. Just put up with a few more of these barnyard beasts and it would be over.
He took a deep breath and once again began this fight to make a good seal of the sheep.

Hiru was almost down and out when his reading partner raised his spirits a bit. He had been doing the hand seals for so long now that his knuckles seemed like they were on the brink of paralysing from overuse. Nevertheless Hiru had to keep going, it wasn't an option, his father, not just him, his whole clan had to be proven wrong. And this was the first step in that direction.

And yet again Hiru failed. Both his hands were aching, a small break would probably be sufficient to solve this problem but he wanted none of it, he was never going to stop until he could finish those darn hand seals once and for all.
"Maybe after I'm done with this, Cassie-sensei will teach me a jutsu...", Hiru whispered, trying to get himself motivated despite repeated failures.
He was almost there, all he needed were a few more tries!

Hiru was getting desperate, he hoped none of the jutsus he'd have to learn would have the dog seal in them, there was something in his anatomy that prevented him from doing this particular seal right. Maybe it was a lack of flexibility in the fingers, maybe it was something about his thick skin that made it tougher for the fingers to slide one against the others. He had to find a way to compensate. Maybe going faster would work...

And yet another failure, 7 times, that was more than enough for Hiru, there had to be superior forces at work he started thinking, did he do anything wrong? He tried to be nice to everybody, did he fail at that too? THis was getting more than ridiculous, yet, Hiru had to keep going again. A dog, one of the most intelligent creatures you can find, with a capacity to learn matched by few others... no wonder he had trouble with this one in particular...

Finally! His perseverance paid off. Hiru remembered Vesimine he saw struggling in the obstacle course because of her own limitation, and how she hadn't ecen come back with them to eat because she was training to get better, and it greatly inspired him. Success is maybe 15% talent, but it sure as hell is 85% sweat blood and tears. He was starting to understand that now. Next was the snake, he studied it from a couple of angles, and gave it a first try.

The snake was easier for Hiru, the animal had similar properties as he did. Now, there was only one left. Once he had mastered the pig, he was done with hand seal training. He really wanted to get this one wrapped up quick, maybe a bit too much. He took great care in analyzing it, carefully watching every subtlety that could cause him grief. He practiced a bit, placed his fingers, and finally got on with it!

Eagerness is never the way to properly train. One has to be aware that only through constant hard work you can really get better and reach your goals. As strange as it seems, standing still, reading a book, that was the hardest training Hiru could have ever been faced with, and he was only a step away from completing it, maybe not as fast as his friends would have done it, but completing it nevertheless!

And it was done. Hiru's hands fell to his sides. He hadn't realized it but the seals actually made chakra flow trhough his fingers and hands, and, just now, he was starting to feel it. Hiru sat down, looked at Cassie-sensei for a few seconds with an oblivious look that slowly turned to a smile, and finally said:
"Cassie-sensei? I think I've done it... and all by myself."

"Cassie-sensei? I think I've done it... and all by myself."
What? Again! Kiketsu pivoted his head for a second to see the boy walk back to his seat. He'd finished first again. With a handicap too. How did he keep his hands steady that whole time. He was itching like his blue body fell into a forest of poison ivy. Yet he managed to surpass everyone first again. "Who is this guy?" the snake like child began to wonder as his pride just took another blow to the stomach. Once again Kiketsu took note of all his peers. The boy with his dreadful red eyes was still reading and girl was still far behind. They weren't a threat. The shark boy now, he'd have to watch him closely with the rest of their tasks for the day.
Remembering his main objective Kiketsu turned back to glare at his hands. He couldn't be that far behind. Was the ivory child lacking that much? Well there would be only one way to find out. It is perhaps this small tinge of curiosity and detestation of being second that pushed him to obtain the sheep sign flawlessly.

The ninth sign was the monkey, Saru. It looked easy enough to do. Just a hand over the other. Kiketsu watched the page one more time to make sure there wasn't any tricks behind it. Seemed ok. He placed his hands one of the other. Still it didn't seem right. The boy tried again and again and yet something felt awry with his seal.
Now Kiketsu was getting a bit irritated. Not able to perform was one thing. It not being right even when you're sure it is correct was another. He would have moved on to the next hand sign if something at the back of his head did not scratch and whispered to him it's wrong. He stared at the seal within the small text. What was wrong? There had to be something. It was like trying investigating a puzzle. There had to be a correct answer though.
