Our own Selina is working on a comic. It's not out there yet.

And apparently I'm going to be booth babing at MicroCon in the Twin Cities coming in the spring.

So I'm trying to lose weight (I heard that if a guy loses 35 lbs., his you-know-what technically grows an inch - greatest incentive EVER). I know a lot of weight loss comes from what you eat. I've tried to just "eat better" and that doesn't work for me, because I end up not doing it. I'm the kind of guy that needs strict boundaries. I was on the Atkins diet for almost a year with decent results.

So I'm thinking of becoming a vegitarian. I figure if I can stay off of carbs for that long, I can go without meat. It's probably easier (it's hard to find a restaurant nowadays w/o veggie options, not so with Atkins s**t) and better for me than not eating bread. Opinions?

Hit the weights, seriously. Muscle is more metabolicly sound. I don't like Adkins, because the no carb thing has gotten rediculous. Someone actually told me Pork Rinds are freaking healthy because of no carbs. Lean meat and lots of veggies are a good way to go. I wouldn't cut out meat altogether because protein is your friend. Bread's fine too, just make it whole grain.

But seriously, do a bit of weight training a couple times a week. Young guy like you should get some good results. Not saying to go all out and be muscle boy, if that's not what you're wanting to do, but you're eating habits sound like you've got them under control and proper excercise will give you results.

I stopped caring about actual weight. As long as I'm happy with how I look and my body can perform as I need it to, I'm good. The performace part is the key thing for me.

The thing is, I have hit the weights. For a solid year my mom and I would go to the YMCA almost daily and one of the staff members was helping me with an excercise routine. But because I wasn't keeping my eating in check it didn't do squat.

Excercise isn't the problem. I can do that just fine. I really don't have my eating habits under control. And I've tried just cutting down on calories, following the food pyramid, eating small meals six times a day instead of big meals three times a day and all that, but I always end up cheating. What I'm trying to do is force myself into a situation where it's hard for me to cheat without a whole lot of effort (I'm lazy and don't feel like checking food labels all the time).

When I'm not paying attention, I often think of myself as Clark in RL.

I'll be doing something and in my head I'll think... "Okay, next, Clark, we have to wash the dishes or do the laundry."

Tis odd.

You're not alone in that. Sometimes I have to remind myself that my middle name is Jean, not Lee. xd

The problem is that it's also very easy to cheat on a vegetarian diet because it doesn't exclude cookies, chocolate, etc. What you're probably looking for in terms of an extreme diet to force your eating habbits is something like vegan or raw food.

My advice is to force yourself not to cheat, the alternative is culinary death. You need carbs to live and long term Atkins diets can cause liver damage. In fact, the reason people on the diet loose weight so fast is that they're duffering from ketosis, which is what your body does when it's starving to death. Namely, burn fat because your body lacks carbohydrates.
Staying ON a vegan or raw food diet is also difficult because they are so strict and you have to make you get enough of all the vitamins, protiens and so forth that you need to live.

And it doesn't "grow" an inch. The fat around the area retracts. Think of relative size and how much is hidden between someone who's 100 lbs and someone who's 300 lbs.

Battling similar weight loss, Miguel, though my problem is more of the get-active variety. I need to join a gym or the YMCA and hit the wieghts, actually. Thanks for the reminder. I can only do so many very bad push-ups. sweatdrop Maybe you should schedule a day for breaking your diet, and control it so it's not so bad? *shrug* No clue if it'd work of course, but might help with keeping a handle on your cravings.

Also, gum.

On the note of anatomical changes, us chicks have the opposite- our boobs get smaller, what with the losing of fat. D: (Of course, lacking a gut makes said boobs more noticeable.)

Yeah, that's what I figured. Still damn good incentive.

That's actually a pretty good idea.

I think I need to get my parents on board for a diet, as well. That's part of what kept me on the Atkins diet - my mom was on it too, so I had her support and she would buy Atkins-friendly food (Atkins brand bread is gross). It's much easier to stick to something when you have help.

Try writing everything you eat down. Makes it harder to cheat and holds yourself more accountable. That and make sure not to eat anything after 8 at night if possible. Go to bed hungry, your body will burn some calories while you sleep and you'll want breakfast to kick start your metabolism again.

Also, if you're drinking diet soda, quit. Damned stuff is horrible for you. Water, baby. I cut 15 pounds last summer and only big difference in my diet was cutting out the sodas for water and green tea.

Say hello to the primary reason why you have trouble losing weight, then. Pop is a huge providor of empty calories, not to mention the bad of caffeine and sugar on your body.

One of the best ways to help your diet is to identify your eating habits. Are you snacking a lot between meals? Why do you eat? Boredom? Cravings? Habit while watching tv/playing games? Once you identify these habits, you can work on a plan to curb or altar them. You can substitute or eliminate the diet-busters once you become conscious of WHY you're doing them.

Maybe we should start a diet support thread here in Kapow!. It's always easiest to start on a regimen if you have people working with you. surprised
