I WAS going to play F Horn . . . my director made my class choose brass instruments (I wanted to play flute oringally) and so I was down to trumpet and horn and I went with trumpet becuase the case was easier to carry. xp That's horrible . . . I know whee

if you buy you're own (cause i'm sure schools wont provide them) you can get a screw off bell. the case is easier than a trumpet; it's like a briefcase. or a soft bag, for about $60 depending on your music store. ...it's light, and you just throw it over your shoulder.
"because the case was easier to carry" should NEVER be an excuse to play TRUMPET (cause that's weak).

unlaqured horns are more mellow and have better sound. i know it's not as pretty, but your ears will disagree with your eyes.

hey, i'm just now in 8th grade and want some tips or advice about marching and the mello...can anybody help me???
First of all, mellophone is one of the most fun instruments to play in marching band (I think it is, anyway). The sound carries extremely well in the fall air.

The mellophone is pretty heavy--it's not a baritone or a sousaphone or anything, but it's harder to carry than a clarinet--so prepare for it by doing a few pushups everyday. Another thing is to really focus on your marching technique once you learn, because if you march well, you'll be able to play well. Use lots of air support, but conserve it too; there's a delicate balance.

Mellophone is also the most impossible instrument to tune, and the tone sucks compared to that of a French Horn. Make sure you sound in tune with your section, because if you're in tune, you sound louder.

The biggest piece of advice I have: remember to have fun. Marching band involves a lot of hard work, but it's so rewarding in the end. I live for marching band because I love it so much.

okay...on the second paragraph, i have a story. when i was section leader, i had a deal made with my BD and the trumpet and baritone section leaders. ANY TIME MY HORN PLAYERS DIDN'T HOLD UP THEIR HORNS PARALLEL TO THE GROUND, I GAVE THE HORN PLAYERS A BARITONE TO MARCH WITH DURING THE NEXT SET. of course, the trumpet players had to carry horns, and if they still complained, they got baritones. i think the baritones loved it when they dropped their horns down lower to parallel. easy day for them.
that's how i kept my horn angles right. no one was sloppy more than once. haha

Yeah, clarinets may not be heavy but they are a pain in the butt to march with, because clarinet players don't get one hand to stabalize their instrument. Try playing throat tone notes one a clarinet while marching, the thing will pop right out of your hands.

--------------

Anyways, I played French horn in 7th grade. (I was placed in the beggining band at the time, but I was completely capable of playing my instrument, so my band teacher let me switch around on what ever I wanted to learn, and what ever our band needed.)

After a quarter, I moved to Baritone horn, then bassoon in eighth grade. Now my junior year of high school roles around and a group of friends is getting a brass sextet together for solo/ensemble. So I relearn French Horn. (which is surprisingly easier than I thought, I guess you don't really forget those kinds of things).

And now I'm second chair of three at our school. First chair is our school's first chair trumpet player, third chair is our school's 3part trombonist.

Love playing in the horn section. I love being a part of of the lush harmonies.

Every instrument has its problems. At least you don't have a giant bell in front of your face when you march clarinet (at least I'm pretty sure you don't, though if you'd like to contradict me again, go right ahead). Try being at a halt on the fifty with only one drum major on the front field holding a mellophone. Don't say listening helps, because phasing can throw you off.
