Free Willy was a movie.
The river fire did help raise environmental awareness though, which I guess was a plus.

The Gulf oil spill was real, though.
It's amazing how quickly people are to dismiss the importance of nature unless there's a directly negative and financial impact.

I live about two blocks from a swamp. I don't particularly like the swamp, but I understand it's importance. I'd be sad if it went away. There's a lot of deer and foxes and such that live in the woods around it that would have nowhere to go if the swamp went away. It's protected though, so it's not going anywhere- but there's lots of other places around my house that aren't protected that are getting bulldozed to make way for shopping centers and housing developments that nobody is going to pay for right now.
It's one of the reasons my family wants to move. There's no green around our house anymore.

My parents live in a nice suburban area. Just the right amount of civilization, but enough forest in every direction that you can get lost in the woods quite easily. It's quite beautiful. The only downside is the townsfolk: petty, small-minded, spiteful.
I'd like to settle down in an area like that, but I'd feel terrible about raising children there.

Detroit? I kid.
I'm aware of the dangers of living in a city, like NY or Newark or being in a foreign country as an American, but I've always considered that I could minimize the risk by taking necessary precautions. Maybe I was fooling myself at the time.

I live just outside of a big city- we've had a lot of violence around this summer, too. More than normal, but there's been a lot of random shooting homicides and whatnot.

Our neighbors filed a false burglary report last month. They had someone pull up to their house, handed them a box of stuff, then reported it stolen. It was pretty damn lulzy.

Hmmmm, I wonder how easy that would be, to enact a false burglary, only with actual breaking in.
