shnarf9892 uchiha_nicole I just started playing french horn a little while ago. Actually, it was like a month ago. Any suggestions for a trumpet-turned-french horn player? Practice, practice, practice. And check out the other post in the Woodwind/brass forum. I just pretty much explained a lot about the switch in that topic. I used to be a percussionist, actually. It was fun, but I was bored all the time. I have been playing piano since I was about four, so the rhythms and such came as a breeze. I wanted a challenge. So I switched to french horn. And holy freaking crap am I glad I did. It has such an awesome sound to it when it's played correctly. It is so warm and rich that it sounds like someone huddled up near a fireplace on a cold winter's night. I love it. Heh, I was the only french horn my first year playing it (seventh grade) so I got first chair. But the next year, I had earned my first chair. And then I moved into the high school band the next year... And still had my first chair position. I'm only a sophomore in high school, but I have my first chair position. NOBODY ever challenges me, lols. If anybody here is from Indiana, then you guys might know what I'm going to talk about here shortly. I entered ISSMA (Indiana State School Music Association) music festival for the first time ever, and I entered in group one. And *YAY!* I got a gold rating. Anybody else have statewide competitions like ISSMA? If so, how did you do? Thanks for the advice. We do what we call Band Festival. It's the MSBOA Michigan Band Festival (Michigan Symphonic Band and Orchestra Assosiation) and bands from all over the state come to our school (we host it) to compete. We play three required pieces for our class (you determine your "class" by how good your band is and how hard of music you want) and then we do sight-reading. Then we wait to see what the judges rate us at (the ratings are 1-5, one being the best, five being the worst). Last year we got a 1, and this year we went to a harder class and are trying to get a one. We are a junior high school and we're playing high school level music. We're the best graduating class that has ever gone through our school system. It's a great feeling. I have first chair at my school becuz i'm the only french horn player.....actually, i think i'm the only french horn player out of all 3 of the bands at our school. I think it's a good thing becuz it's easier for me to play the high notes. i'm not too good with the low notes. lol.

[Aelfwyn] Oooo..I too am a trumpet-turned-horn. Unfortunately, I only started on the 9th of January xp Do you like it so far? I really like it. Although, even though i just started my teacher picked the music where all three have required french horn solos. i was like "ggggrrrreeeeeeaaaaaaattttt.............." but yeah, it's fun. and it sounds AWESOME!

I play the mellophone in marching band, but outside of that I play trumpet. The F horn, when played well is amazing.. but when someone isnt very good, the sound vaguely reminds me of an elephant.

The only problem with horn is the fact that it sounds AMAZING (and even heavenly) when it's played RIGHT. ....right being the key word. The problem? MOST people that play it can only play it good. Not right. It is a very rare occasion that you get to hear an amazing horn player....(unfortunately I'm one of the wannabe players that are hated by the rest of the band cuz I can only play it "good". crying maybe someday......no. I WILL someday! ^_^)

French Horns!!! heart I'm in my third year playing, and i'm going to go to an arts high school for music. It's really funny cuz we played this piece last year with a french horn solo at the beginning and most ppl in my band just expected that all french horn players are as good as me (yea right). We were at a music festival, and this other school plays this piece, and it SUCKED!!! Their horn player had his hand way up in his horn, which totally wrecked his tone, and he couldn't play any of the rythms right, and everyone in my band was suddenly like 'wow, you are so much better than him!' Anyways, i play in my school's concert band (only gr. 8, so we don't have chairs or anything), the local all-star band (im 1st horn), and in a wind quintet at a music academy.

So I played the single Bb french horn last year, and so my band director found out and now he is expecting me to play the school's double F horn next week. Here is my problemo, I can't read the music! I'm used to reading trumpet music! And I can't find the bottom note or whatever for the basic scale(like on a flute the Bb scale). I don't know if anyone could post anything that may help me, but I could really use it! I've been trying to make a long Bb on my flute, then trying to remember that and match it on the horn... It isn't working out well.

the only thing i hate is transitioning from mellophone fingerings back to french horn. but i love french horn <33333.
i think a french hornist's dream song is either Fate of the Gods With Quiet Courage or ultimately The Divine Comedy! domokun

We're going april 28th, I believe. We could have went for free but we wanted to meet our band directors highschool band. lol.
Oh. And for those that are switching from horn mouthpiece to melli mouthpiece, please, I beg you, keep practicing on your horn mouthpiece. Your tone quality will disenigrate if you only practice the melli mouthpiece. And it takes a while for it to go back... experienced. lol. It sucked...

QUESTION:
Does anyone have good, challenging Horn Duet sheet music sitting around on their computer they could send me? :> The first four horns at my school were going to do a quartet this year for competition, but didn't have music in time. Also, I don't trust us to be good, so I was thinking of asking the 2nd chair to do a duet with me. Any ideas what we should play?
(We're in a AA band, I'm first, she's second, w have a year to practice, hard music plz.)

FRENCH HORNS! I love you all!
Lol.. I switched from flute to french horn because our band was so top heavy (think waaayyy to many piccolo players *wince*) we needed more brass, so I decided to do it for the band. I had never touched a brass instrument before in my life.
Needless to say I was quickly frustrated, but after a LOT of practice fell in love with it and now I'm... I wouldn't say good... but decent.
I still can't hit high notes very well! Any advice? Maybe I am holding on to bad flute habits and I don't realize it...?
But playing the horn... best thing I ever did. biggrin

^ To play high notes, use faster air, and push your corners in (not too much). Try not to pinch too much (that's what I do, and as a result, I have a crappy high range)
I got a new mouthpiece on Friday. I'm so happy!
