@ long convo b/t Renny & Rei: FE7 takes place 20 years before FE6; the Scouring was 980 years before FE7 events. Therefore, Ninian and Nils are roughly 1000 years old. Nergal married their mother before the Scouring. Since she was a dragon, once the Scouring started, the anti-dragon humans would've been after her.
My theory is that she was kidnapped and Nergal took the kids to Valor for their safety while he went to get Aenir. However, he couldn't find her and didn't know she was killed. Knowing that as a dragon she had a long lifespan, he held onto the hope that she was still alive and somehow managed to stay alive for five hundred years until he met Athos. The two of them found Arcadia and it was there that Nergal discovered the art of stealing quintessence. And the rest beyond that is given to you in game cannon.

It took me hours to get caught up, and that was just skimming through the important stuff. >.<
