"Nah, I got outta 'Nam by goin' to college."
The cane being acknowledged reminded him that he could only stay on his feet for so long. Very carefully, mustering as much dignity about the simple act as he could muster, he sad down the nearest convenient rock. Once he was settled, he continued.
"Damn good thing, too, cause if I was rejected I woulda had to get somebody to shoot me in the foot or somethin'. Or go to Canada, but what the ******** is there to do in Canada?"
He put a hand on his leg and sighed. "No, this was a motorcycle accident from... I dunno, few weeks back. I forget when, exactly."

Alec's hopes were somewhat crushed when he heard that Sid had evaded the war in Vietnam, figuring he'd be losing out on many an interesting story now. He laughed with a bit of immaturity at the older man's comments, seeing as he had no idea where Canada even was to begin with. It sure sounded boring though. Wasn't there someone he knew around here that was from Canada...?
"Aw, ye go' a wheeleh. Thas cool." The boy nodded with an appreciation for Sid's obvious hobby, seeing as he'd always wanted to ride and own a motorcycle. "Ay, it'll ge' betteh then."

"Got dragged under the damn thing for a good hundred feet or so, nasty mess..." Sid said. He nearly plunged into the death defying tale, but something Alec said stopped him. "What'll get better?"

Alec was beginning to swish his arms back and forth under the water infront of himself, scrutinizing the distorted image they made from above when he heard Sid's question. Blinking confusedly, he stared back at Sid as if he wasn't aware he'd said something cryptic. The leg didn't look casted to him, so he naively assumed it'd only been bumped around a bit on impact. "Ye leg. I'll ge' betteh. Righ'?" Unsatisfied with his retort, he continued. "Ye c'n walk i' off?"

"No, it won't," Sid said. Some of his good humor died with that. "Dude, my knee was all but reduced to hamburger meat. They did I-don't-know how many surgeries on it, and even then they said it's never gonna be alright. And by 'they', I mean this was before. Last I heard of it was all the 'physical therapy' smoke and mirrors bullshit I got when I arrived."

I am such an a*****e.
Alec felt a pang of guilt at bringing up a painful subject, even moreso he felt an insane sense of stupidity at how he'd assumed things to be. The visual of a hamburger-meat kneecap didn't quite sit well in his somewhat empty stomach and it took all his will not to visibly grimace at the thought. He didn't quite know what to say that would be appropriate now that he was actually thinking before he spoke.
"Ah... sorreh."

Sid uttered a heavy sigh, his shoulders sagging as if he was deflating. Wouldn't do to take it out on the kid, or get worked up over anything, really. "It's not your fault," he said. "It's nobody's fault but mine."
And, as he thinks about it, the story is not one he wants to tell, embelished or not. So, a rare thing for him, he falls silent and just settles for admiring the way the sunlight plays upon the water.
"So," he says, remembering Alec. He pauses long enough to grab desperately for a new conversation topic. "What do you do- uh, around here... for fun... or... whatever. s**t, that's lame."

Alec welcomed the break in tension with a bit of a laugh, thankful that Sid didn't harbor any ill will for the clueless teenager. He often found himself making similar errors in judgement, often with bad consequences. "Heh.. uh, a' d'neh. A' like me drums bu' a' won' be seein' those fo' awhile. Ye coul' watch tv n' th'village?" He really was at a loss for ideas. The island wasn't exactly a hub of activity on any normal day, and most of the islanders seemed to rather like a solitairy lifestyle, evident by how many he assumed he had yet to meet.

"What happened with your drums?" he asked.
He had no idea why Alec was really out there.

He inwardly sighed at the chore that was reitterating his current 'punishment' to yet another uninformed person. Each new instance made him anxious and afraid of the possibility that the peron would react negactively to his 'cause' and the like, afterall he was alone in the middle of the jungle and therefore very vulnerable in a sense. For now he wouldn't cut out the details but at the same time he hoped Sid's curiousity wasn't as strong as his.
"Theh n' me place." He slowly began, trying to piece together a watered-down explanation. "Bu' 'ave been locked ou' fo' pissin' off th'Doc real bad."

"Really," he said, turning that over in his mind. Not pissing off the people in charge should have been a given, but he'd never thought of that or the possible retribution involved. Something to file away for future reference, with hopes that he could remember that much.
And after all that, all he could say in addition was, "That bites."

Understatement. He thought, but chose not to say. Compared to many possible alternatives, Alec was relatively pleased enough to cope in his new surroundings. It helped that he was content moreso that his accomidations were due to a decision he was proud of. "Ye... s'alrigh', a' alwehs w'nted t'neh 'ow t'fish..." The teen remarked and then paused, only to chuckle at the utter bullshit of his last statement. Oh well, what were ya gonna do?
"Speakin o' tha'" He huffed as he pulled himself out of the water and fully onto the bank once again. "a' betteh keep scoutin' fo' lunch o' a'll ge' none." He chuckled again, looking complacent.

"Good luck with that, man," Sid said. Then, realizing how insenstive that might sound, he added, "Wish I could help, but I was never that good at fishing. Unless you count the part where you sit on the boat and drink. That I could do like a pro."
It was decided, once he shut up, that he was going to stay where he was at least long enough to do what he intially set out for... Once Alec was out of sight. After that he'd go home.

Alec smiled as he got up from his seat in the wet sand, dusting himself off with little success. "Heh, thank ye! Don' try i' though, ay? Ye'll ge' n' trouble too." He made sure to throw in that bleak fact, figuring he'd rather not be responsible for not properly informing someone in advance. Compared to most, he knew well how badly the consequences could be for a small error in judgement. "A'll see ye 'round, come visi' th' lonleh shawk!" The boy waved with half the effort as he began another sweep down the bank of the river.

"I'll be sure to!" He called. After that, at long last, it was back to the plan. He stayed where he was at least until the sun started to go down, then it was just a matter of popping the pills and heading back once they took effect.
