I think that the rod was worth it personally. So far out of four games, nearly half my bucket was biters or boulders. But I was filtering junk and some pebbos as well.
And instead of getting a musketeer hat, I am going to get the pimpin red wine hat.

Wait for one that is a decent price, under 12k or so, to appear in the market. Buy it and then sell your normal distance rod and discount it only about 100g from the store price. That way it will cost you less than 9k in total.

Good Idea, my thrifty homie. But I thought if I bought an upgraded distance rod, the regular and upgraded would fuse into one upgraded rod.

I don't know, but I know that I sold my distance rod first, and then bought the upgrade, so it is my only rod. When I fish, I can choose to use it as either a distance rod or an upgraded distance rod. I think the fusing only counts when you do the upgrade from the fishing store.
