And Dimi, I do those with back and forth between paint and photoshop. You can easily get a free version of photoshop 7.0 online. I could share a few templates if you ever feel like trying out a few avatar edits.

First go online and download Photoshop 7.0, many people have it. Browse online for a serial number, it will work.
Next go to Tektek.org as a base for your edits in the beginning, start by making modifications to existing clothes before making them from scratch, you'll see gradually you'll be able to do more and more.
Your two best friends will be the dodge/burn tools to make shading effects rather easily.
I have my ninja uniform basics that I alter for individuals for each village, I could share some if you like, just tell me which!

How much are you using paint and how much are you using photoshop when creating one of your images? And what are you using paint for and what are you using photoshop for?
Also do you have any exercises for a beginner? sweatdrop
