Snazzy Snail I play Alto, but Im not very good, and Im starting to think its not for me.... Aww! One thing that's helped me improve a lot was listening to professional sax players. Another thing that can make all the difference in the world is embouchure. People that don't play with their mouths at least pretty tight don't tend to sound ... good (they're all airy and stuff) (except on low notes). I've seen some people improve nothing but their embouchure and their tone sounds a LOT better. What exactly aren't you good at? Speaking of embouchure, I have a question myself. When I have my mouth on the mouthpiece, I kind of put my bottom teeth under my lip and bite my lower lip against the reed. Putting pressure on the reed like that gives me really good tone, but, uh, it hurts a lot after a while and I'm sure that's not exactly good for my lip and stuff. Does anyone else do this too, and does anyone know of a way to still get a good tone without ruining my mouth? biggrin

Well that really is a problem for most sax players. If i'm playing for extended periods of time my bottom lip get's all bloody. I cant help it and there's nothing i can do about it. Maybe you could loosen up? I dont really have much advise on it since it's a common thing if you're playing for long preiods. If you're not then O_O loosen up that jaw!

If I loosen up, my sound gets airy and bad, especially on high notes. cry
But wow, even after playing for looong periods of time at band camp and stuff, at least my lips have never bled. eek

I didn't let some silly pieces of metal ruin my sax playing!

Mine bled for the first time a week ago. I hadn't played much in the past year and then I went to marching band where I played for 8 hours a day for two weeks. Somehow I actually felt better after that. Like my mouth needed to bleed like that to finally get used to playing so much. If that makes any sense at all ^_^*

Well there isnt much for Tenor sax in general but if your good at transposing you could do that to the tons of flute music and piano music out there.

OH MY GOSH.
My sax is COMPLETELY broken. The key below the G key won't close right, and it makes it so I can't play at ALL. Grrrr! I don't even know it happened! Now I have to use a school horn. My poor instrument. crying

I used to play alto, but I switched to tenor halfway through my 8th grade year. I LOVE the tenor to death, but our school doesn't have very good ones. I used to be one of the best altos, but now when I get out my alto to play it at home, I'm too loud and out of tune. So I guess I'm just stuck with tenor...oh well! My school bought a new one this year!
I can play those really low notes on alto like nothing though. Tis quite awesome.
