Well, apparently (and this is just hearsay now) Nergal left his kids behind on Valor to go and find his wife, and they went through the Dragon's Gate after a while and lost their memories. The Wiki, at least (again, this isn't confirmed) says that he took up dark magic to find his kids. But he met Athos in Nabata, and they traveled together for a while and then spent a few hundred years sitting around in Arcadia. And he did learn about quintessence there, at least.
>.< My version of the story is that he found Renault in the desert, stole some of his quintessence, then got Renault to work for him. I mean, if it had gone some other way I'd think he could have found more than one person to collect quintessence for him for 500 years or so. But if he'd already taken Renault's quintessence he would have had to do something to keep him alive, and he might as well have him work for him too.
Which makes me think that Renault's at least a little bit Morph. Which I also have my own theories about but that would take a while. Like what I did during Halloween except more in-depth. XD
