I think I just died a little inside. Raoul is kind, emotional, brave, fairly quick on the uptake, perhaps not the most rational thinker, but rebellious... he gave up his money, his lifestyle, his position in society to run away with Christine. Just being in love with her would have been taboo. Not to mention he was a sailor so he was physically strong, and he WAS right about Erik...someone WAS playing with Christine's emotions.

As an aristocrat, he probably went straight to officer-dom.)

ALL men essentially in that era and before were "pansies" because they openly wept. Dr. Van Helsing in Dracula wept a LOT in the book. And he's still portrayed as strong. Doesn't matter that he cried of emoion. He was brave enough to risk life, limb, and even Aristocratic title to have his beloved.

On my birthday, my ultimate PHAN moment, I was thrown a surprise party. Everyone was cheering when I walked through the door, and singing. I was all happy, and I go to sit down and eat cake, when the lights go out all flickery, and my friend lamely presses a button on the cd player, playing the Phantom of the Opera. I cracked up, and listened pleasantly, then began to sing off key along with it. I was about to sing Erik's part, but was interrupted by the lights being flung on.
And there in the hallway, was the Phantom, walking towards me, singing off-key also, to the song. He had the hat and the mask (on the wrong side of his face, but whatever), and sang to me. As he got closer I realized it was my good buddy (And crush), and he suddenly got annoyed, knocked over the cd player, and says, "Screw this, I can't sing." And sits down at the piano and plays the song.
I died. heart But not really.
Hee, I've never seen it on Broadway or tour, I'm really quite jealous of all you. I can never be a true phan. XP

The point is that while Van Helsing and Erik are portrayed as strong, Raoul isn't. He deos heroic things, but when he does them he does them stupidly. When Van Helsing/Erik did things, he did them intelligently. Just read the novel and you get the image of a very effiminate yougn man runnign down a hallway sobbing after a Christine being led away by a tall, dark figure.

Pansy is more or less someone who is too afraid to go through with things. Raoul, by definition is NEITHER. @ Erin: Actually, that is not the image I get of Raoul. He is the personality contrast of Erik. So while Erik is the insane, mad with power deformed man, Raoul is the gentle and safe young man with a soft little heart. His appearance was described as effeminite, but that doesn't mean it went down to his soul. I think you both are ganging up on me here.

Any guy who would go running through a labyrinth in pitch black darkness, knowing there's a man that would like to see him dead lurking about in it, is not a pansy in my book. He goes to save a girl who had previously "dumped" him in a way, but still loves her enough to go risk his life. Well-dressed does not equal pansy. (In ALW's version, the Phantom dresses nicely. And I don't believe him to be a pansy)
I need to read the book again, I'm being too vague. ^^'

I disagree, Raoul wasn't stupid.. just...well... impetuous. He had a tendency to jump head first into things because it meant the safety of the person he loved more than anything. If we're talking ALW then let's stick YOU behind a portcullis unarmed trying to save your true love and see what YOU do. If we're talking Leroux let's stick YOU in a torture chamber with a persian with poor sense of direction (XD) and see what would happen. Geeze! Stop picking on the poor guy! He's basically at the mercy of a madman! A very kickass mad man but mad nonetheless. I'm with you Uta!

Anyways the night before she was abducted they'd agreed to run away. She begged to sing for Erik one last time, just out of the goodness of her heart because it would be too cruel to just abandon him. She really did pity and care about him in away... until he shove a chloroformed rag over her face and knocked her out. But yes.

On The Right Track messages...
Voila! I'm enrolled in St. Charles Summer Institute MUSICAL REVUE camp!! It's a section of the camp where we select songs from certain Broadway musicals and perform them. Me, I'm going to suggest Phantom songs...
AND, there's a tour of the Garnier coming up in my future.
