Nios
I like your work Keith. You should post more. You are technically the artist out of the whole group. heart
Thanks, Nios, it really means a lot coming from you. All of the work I've seen on here isn't exactly what I'd call shabby either. I've always had a weakness for ink drawings (your own) as well as faceless figures (MaiKun [where the hell have you been?]).

Does that make raise my emo points? ...I hope not.

I'll try to post more often, but like usual I have horrible timing, and my computer is on the fritz, hence me not being online much at all. My only other choice is to come to the basement, where I'm sure it's possible to get frostbite. But this definately isn't the last of me! wink

I've mostly been working on my fashion designs, I'm really hoping to get into FIT in New York, wish me luck!

My designs:

Please tell me what you think.

Ack! I totally had my response typed up, but then I was a moron and Ctrl+C'd something else...and now it is all gone. Woe. Anyway, what I had to say is basically this:

Knowing nothing really about fashion design, I have to say that the clumsiness of your figures is a distraction. I know that your focus is on the outfit, but I can't think the figure can be dismissed out of hand. Having a stable sense of proportion and body movement I would think to be essential to the design of any garment. Practice gesture drawing, get your figures worked out, and then you can really focus on the fashion design elements.

And good luck!

To expand on Astri's comments, I find the best way to get a feel for basic proportions right is timed or gestural drawings.

Go anywhere and sketch people as they go about their business. They aren't stiff models and mannequins, they aren't meant to stay put and gives a better knowledge of depth than an anatomy book (though they help) or guesswork will ever provide. Something close to the Tangerine Speedo, except for a female body. (Hypocritical of me to ask, since I lack the ability to draw proportional females myself.)

I do enjoy the fluidity in the the fabrics that peaks with Mercury, and at its lowest only degrades to a stiff manga-esque fold. Didn't we talk about the heavy 70's and Yoshitaka Amano influences before? biggrin

Thank you for the critique and comments! Yes my figures are a little awkward at times but they're also ten heads tall so poses and gestures don't always translate as well like in figure drawing. Also, I tend to scan them off center so that's why some of them may look tilted or off kilter. My scanner isn't very high quality so i assure you the colors and densities look much better in real life.

Actually, such an alteration of proportions shouldn't effect poses or gestures very much at all.

Stick figures!

I felt like posting something. So. This is one of my favorite pieces from high school. Someday I will take a less shitty scan of it. Someday I will also draw new things and scan them so that you need not look at things I drew in years gone by. My teacher was very unimpressed by this piece, btw. It made me sad. But I like it. It isn't perfect, obviously, but I like it.

I think the black looks more solidly black in the original...but I haven't looked at it in a while. I think this was also scanned off-center.

I forgot how cute your spindly and tattoo-esque figures were. How I do wish I could use marker. xp

I miss drawing what I like to draw. Cute and fluffy things with happiness. That part of my life died last semester, befor Art with Mrs. Mills.

Uch. Bad art teachers are the worst. I mean, sometimes you can learn a lot from the experience, and different teaching styles work better with different people, etc, etc. But.

And thanks, Keithing. I like 'em, too. Always intended to do more with them...

Don't let it phase you! If you really want to keep it going, never stop just because one person thinks they have the authority to tell you what your art should be.

Astri: I can just see an anthology of short stories or poetry illustrated with those. They make me think of the spindly resin sculptures I saw once.

Ugh. I just remembered my portfolio work pictures are 5 megapixels each! This may take a few days, but I promise I'll have them up. *whines* I need criticisms too!

Oh, do get them up! I like critiquing s**t. Unless it's actually s**t. Then I just sit awkwardly with my foot in my mouth. Um, but I'm not too worried about this when it's you. xd

I've actually made sculptures with similarly skeletal figures. Out of armature wire (aluminum). Only one was really successful. My winged-man. Sadly, I have no pictures of him. Man, I miss armature wire! I should just bloody buy some. And some tools. And some aluminum tape...

Oh, wait...that would take money. whee

ART!

This boy wouldn't let me sleep last night, so tonight I drew him.

User Image

He's not perfect, but he's the first not-from-life drawing I've done in a long while. And he actually looks the part. Yeah, I looked at a picture or two on google and used a mirror. I always do. But he's hardly a copy of anything. He was pretty insistant last night (as I tried to sleep despite him and the tap-tap-tap of the ******** ventilation) that his name was "Jareth." However, as he's clearly not David Bowie's goblin king, that name will likely change if I ever decide to use him for anything (hahahahahaha! use! hahahahaha!). Honestly, I know maybe three or five other things about this kid. I'm not telling. razz But, er...his eyes are blue. Very blue. Yes. Omg, I drew something!

I actually think he kinda looks like Nios...

Edit (for better):

User Image

The original looks a lot more like this, only graphite on recycled sketch paper rather than the black&white.

On entirely different note, I just want to brag that I have my very own original artworks from the oh-so-talented Keith. <333333333
