One of the main things that first drew me to Clark and Lex as a couple is the chemistry between the two; even if you don't see it leaning towards romantic, there's no denying that they have a very strong dynamic. And they could have been truly amazing friends to this day if Clark had been able to open up.
Part of the appeal is, of course, the actors -- TW and MR work very well together. But there's only so much blame that can be laid on the actors -- at the end of the day it's still the writers responsible for the scripts. And when the subtext is very much a flashing neon sign it's a little bit hard to ignore or deny, no matter how much they seem to idolize Lana.

I'm not terribly interested in the romance on Smallville (or on any show, actually, which sometimes makes me wonder why I watch television at all), but Clex is a pairing I could get behind. I love watching enemies interact, especially a relationship that starts out strong and then slowly deteriorates. Watching Clark and Lex interact has always, for me, been the main draw of the show.
When you get right down to it, the show is about Superman coming into his own, growing up, becoming the man we see in the movies, and Lex is a tremendous part of that experience, whether their relationship is actually romantic or not. Lana Lang lives on, sure, but Clark and Lex are the characters who really matter, in the end; the fate of the world hinges on how they get along. The greatest hates often grow from the greatest loves, to mangle an old cliche, and I like the think that, to have the awesome rivalry they have later, they would have to start out with a pretty awesome love for one another (platonic or otherwise). Just my two cents. I'll go slink off into a dark corner now. xd

Sweet. I think I love you. xd For any of you that are interested there's a community over on LJ called Clex Weekly -- it's just getting started, but the articles are very well thought out and articulate. Even if you don't support Clex it might be worth a few minutes of your time to check it out.

I don't really like the couples in gilmore girls, smallville, and veronica Mars.

I don't like the canon couples on Smallville either. Particularly since many of them involve Lana. blaugh I also think, since a lot of stuff on the show is delivered to us in a pretty ham-fisted manner (I love Smallville, but it is not the place I go for subtlety), that I'm attracted to something I can just pick up in the subtext. I don't want some schmoopy affair where Clark is pining for the girl who's just too good for him; I want to see a relationship between equals. I think that's the draw of slash in general, for a lot of people: with typical heterosexual romance, there's so much of a woman either being put up on a pedestal or treated like a piece of meat that it's nice to see a different dynamic.

Dash of Paprika I also think, since a lot of stuff on the show is delivered to us in a pretty ham-fisted manner (I love Smallville, but it is not the place I go for subtlety), Seriously. Having Clark divine, every other episode, that he "hate costumes" is not what I consider to be subtle irony.
Dash of Paprika I don't want some schmoopy affair where Clark is pining for the girl who's just too good for him; That's not even how I'd characterise the Clana relationship.
Dash of Paprika I think Lana is a terrible example of what happens when writers play favorites. That she has as much screentime as she does seems criminal. The tangle of love triangles and terror she creates makes me want to tear my hair out. Seriously: Lex? The hell? I think the writers have done a great deal of damage to a character with a lot of potential. If you love a puppy too much, you run the risk of crushing it in a hug. She has been characterised inconsistently, involved in storylines that shouldn't naturally include her and given roles that other characters in the DC mythos should have played, and it hasn't added anything to her or to the storyline.
They've done the same thing to the Clana relationship, which, while something I was never a fan of, had a lot of narrative potential. It annoys me because I wanted to like Lana, and I wanted to be neutral to Clana.
I don't think the producers chose Kristin based completely on her looks. She looks nothing like Lana from any previous incarnations.

They didn't choose her for looking like previous incarnations of the Lana character (because she doesn't); it has nothing with that -- they choose her because she's hot. Okay, maybe she nailed the line. Maybe she didn't. But, quibbling aside, after reading the writers' statement you can't help but fall for the inevitable conclusion -- she looked like everything they wanted Lana Lang to embody, and they fell hook, line and sinker. And I agree with the fact that it is, partially, the writers' fault; they did a really crappy job of consistently portraying the character throughout the series. But, also, I just don't really respect Kristen Kreuk as an actor -- she really hasn't shown us her best up to this point; and there is only so much you can blame on a poorly written script. But, moving back to the subject on hand -- did anyone check out Clex Weekly?

First things first eeeeeeeeeeeeeew... (no offence to anyone who plays on that side of the basketball court)
Alright now that I got that out of my system. I don't feel Clark and Lex would bable to facilitate a meaningful relationship. I'm not saying that it's one of those things that just didn't work out if they tried. I'm saying it just wouldn't work...
