This would be the point that Pol would have jumped up and down for joy, because the question he asked was the ONE question that would sober her giddy little butt up.
Quite of it's own accord, her face had pailed, and her eyes had grown sad, her hand slid slowly from her hair and her other hand just sorta flopped by her hip. Her eyes slowly crawled down to the floor to stare at her feet, and tears started to well up in them, one by one.
"Well... No, they aren't, becase they aren't anymore..." She sighed and shook her head, slowly letting it rise up as she wiped away the tears, hoping he hadn't noticed she'd been about ready to cry. She fixed a smile on her face, and tried to brighten her eyes. But it was hard, it was still a fresh wound, but one she felt had been worth inflicting if only becuase it got her out of a realtionship that was going nowhere fast.
"I'm a single mother, so to speak, though in truth I haven't had a child to call my own in what feels like a very long time, all of my children are grown," She smiles at Aoaka again, and bows her head slightly, letting out a weak laugh. "I tend to adopt strays, but my father won't let me keep any of them here, he's getting so finicky in his old age,"
Of course, now she was feeling old, and she hated that, because her father was starting to show signs of age himself, and he was only over a year. She wondered though, if he was just doing it because he had nothing better to do, or if it really was his age catching up to him. He was one of the first few to awaken, and one of the firsts to become and Elder. But that was not a thought she wanted to dwell on, so again she changed the subject.
"But that's really not all that important," She smiled and waved her hand over to the food. "Would you like something to eat? Drink?"

Aoaka felt terrible, and was mortified at himself. He had indeed seen the tears, and if there had been a rock to crawl under, he would have tried his best to do so.
"I'm sorry, miss Pol... I didn't mean to make you upset, I promise that I didn't," he said, sincerely, an attempt at an apology that, to his mind, came nowhere near to being enough. But, what else could he do?
She said it wasn't important, but he knew that wasn't true. If it made her want to cry, then it had to be very important. However, if she didn't want to talk about it, he wouldn't inflict the subject on her anymore. He made a mental note to never bring it up again.
Accepting her subject change, he nodded, grateful for the small distraction. He smiled, though it was a bit subdued, and said, "Something to drink, I think... I've been out of the water for a bit, and I'm feeling a little thirsty."
In fact, he was beginning to itch just a little, a sign that he should get back to the water soon before his skin became dry. But he didn't want to leave until he saw Polgara smile again, and for real, not because she was trying to change the subject. It had been his fault, so it was his responsiblity to make it up to her.

Polgara nodded and made her way over to the table, looking around trying to find if she'd stashed water anywhere nearby. As luck would have it, she had, next to the booze, mainly for herself if she'd happen to get a little too lose with it on herself.
It happened from time to time, espcially if she was mixing drinks, because the sugar usually tricked her into thinking there was less alchohal in the drink than there acutually was.
Yes, Elders were supposed to set examples, but they're only human, and do have their faults. Polgara tried her best to remain as sober as humanly possible around others, because she didn't like how weepy she got when she drank, but since she hoped the net a bunch of concenting adults to help her out on campaign, she'd decided to furnish the party with some booze, just in case.
She was beginning to wonder if she was going to end up drinking it all.
That could get ugly.
Once she got the water, she poured it in a glass and headed back to Aoaka. "I got you some water, as you said that's where you came from, I can get you some punch instead if you'd rather," She smiled sheepishly, hoping she hadn't overstepped her bounds in her assumption.

Aoaka shook his head, smiling. "Water's fine, thank you. I like the daquiri's at Hula Bob's, especially the strawberry ones, but water is just what I need right now," he said.
"Do you ever go there?" he asked, curious. He'd never seen her... he'd never seen any elder there except for Jazz, actually... but he thought she'd get along well with the people he knew there.

Polgara smiled, "No, not really," She said with a slight chuckle. "I usually just stay around the HQ working on things," She bowed her head, "I don't really go out all that often," She had to bite her tongue hard, preventing herself from asking if he'd like to take her out.

Aoaka frowned slightly, thinking. He didn't get out much, either, but thanks to people urging him to do so, he was getting better in that respect. He was much happier now that he had, too. He hadn't even known he wasn't happy before, but now he could see that he had been lonely. He wondered if Polgara was, too.
He nodded slightly, as though deciding something, and smiled at Polgara.
"You really should! I bet you'd have a lot of fun," he said, and paused. She was going to think he was rude... but... he fidgeted with his water glass for a moment before spreaking again.
"Maybe... you'd like to go to Hula Bob's sometime? With me? I could introduce you to everyone... and they have a dance floor and a bar...?" he asked, tensing as he waited for her response. He was out of line; Aoaka was sure of it. He fidgeted with his water glass again, before taking another drink to distract himself.

Pol smiled, "I'd love to," She bowed her head and chuckled a little. "So uhm, set up a time?" She asked, her hand starting to wander back towards her hair.
SCORE! SCORE! Sure he was shorter than her and he was probably way younger than her, but what did she care, SCORE!

Aoaka opened his mouth to say that he understood, she didn't have to feel bad about not going... but stopped with it agape and blinked. Did she just say...?
"Really? That's awesome! Uhm... how about... in a few days? Is that too soon? Do you want to wait until the election is over?" he asked, a smile spreading across his face. She'd agreed!
((the biggest thing is that Aoaka is currently rping in that thread, where they're having a limbo competition. So, I think that should finish first.))

"A few days is fine, maybe I can spread the word in there if the boss will allow," She smiled and bowed her head. She knew Sol had gone, so maybe she could convince him to come again? NO! Bad idea! He'd watch her like a hawk and then she'd get NOWEHERE!
"I'd like to do it before the end of the elections, after all, better to get votes now than later," She grinned and suddenly was twriling her finger in her hair again.

Aoaka wanted to dance! But he wasn't completely sure of his land legs yet, and he was simply just too self-conscious to do so. So instead, he just smiled. A lot.
His eyes strayed to where she was twirling her hair, and he said, "I think Hula Bob won't care. He's really laid back, as long as everyone gets along." He saw her grin, and cheered in his mind. Success! He'd gotten her to smile again, for real!
Another drink from the glass as he thought, and then he spoke. "So... what do you like to do? I heard there's a library in the healing house, but I prefer exploring the lake. Maybe once I get more used to walking around I'll be more interested," he said, and blushed a bit, sheepishly.
(( didja check Pol's journal? ))

"I like to read, take care of children, dance, and have fun," Polgara said in a light and happy tone. "I'm not much of a swimmer, my mom was, but I haven't seen her in ages," She sighed softly. "It's driving dad nuts, but I think he's gotten over her and come to grips with the fact that she's not coming back."
She shrugged and let it go at that, refusing to let it dampen her mood at all.

"Oh, but swimming is fun! You don't even have to go deep, if you don't want to. The shallows can be fun, too, especially when you get some waves coming in and they splash against you," he said, not sure at all how to respond to the comments about her mom. He didn't want to continue a topic that might make her sad again.
"I like children, too, but I don't know very many... I mean, those I did know grew up, and I haven't met any others. And I... well... I don't know how to dance..." he said, a bit embarassed. But then again, he hadn't had very many opportunities to do so, either.

Polgara smiled, and decided to leave out the fact that he might like her grandchildren... That could wait.
"I'll have to give it a try," She smiles, before bowing her head a little and letting out a little sigh. "Perhaps... You can teach me?"

Aoaka nodded, and smiled. "That would be fun, I think. So... If I teach you how to swim, will you try to teach me how to dance? No promises that I'll be any good at it..."
He chuckled self-deprecatingly and took another sip from his water cup.

Polgara smiled. "Of course! I'd love to teach you how to dance," She smiled and bowed her head slowly, trying to hide a growing blush.
She was crushing so hard on this guy it wasn't even funny!
