the language issue is the same wherever you go unfortunately, because people are the same. some want to make the most of their lives, some don't seem to want to help themselves at all, some expect everything to be handed to them on a plate etc. Every nation has the same types of people, because i work in a factory we get a huge amount of immigrants, and so many of them don't even try to speak English sweatdrop all they can say is'me no understand' it's extremely frustrating, but on a deeper level, it's extremely dangerous! there's been far more accidents since they took these people on. of course they're meant to do a multiple choice test before they let them start working for us, to see if their English is good enough, but the person in charge of them fills it in for them if they can't do it mad
but the flip side of the coin..the other 50% speak excellent English and are embarrassed by the behaviour of some of their fellow country folk.
seems that no matter what language you speak or where in the world you come from, behavioural traits are pretty much the same, you can split most people on the planet into the same catagories, the workers, the slackers, the nice, the nasty etc. humanity as a whole is one entity, regardless of the noises your tongue makes when you wag it rolleyes
Sryne, i was thinking of the major conflicts of the planet when i considered there having been no union too, there would have been others instead no doubt, but maybe they'd have been contained within the continent, much as the upheavals in South America are.

Well put, I must say.
Perhaps, or maybe if the US wasn't united they wouldn't have been seen as a big threat and would've been attacked sooner one "country" at a time.

Sryne As for what I was going to say early, I can't stand when people move to a country with a different language, don't know the native language, and make no effort to learn it. I've seen it way too many times where I used to live (up near DC) and it really gets to me. What's worse, is that the US is accomodating these people so that they won't have to learn our language. I can't call tech support anywhere without having to choose between spanish and english. I can't drive down the street without seeing a hand written sign posted below a printed sign just to translate it to spanish. You can thank the ACLU for that... They want to take away alot of stuff from the U.S. including Christmas. burning_eyes It's supposed to be a "HOLIDAY" Tree now, not a Christmas tree... and no crosses on federal property. (Uhhh... yeah take a look at Arlington Nation Cemetary you idiots!) I understand that our country is very diverse and rich with many cultures, but it is getting ridiculous! It used to be we were the "Great American Melting Pot".. the people who came here worked HARD to get where they got. Now everyone wants a free ride and they are getting it, in spades. Grrrr ok, *deep breath* sorry.

Thank you whee think a little further into this though, if the US hadn't been around to be the big, powerful country, who would have stepped up to the plate? Russia? Britain? China? maybe..without the strength of the US in WW2, Germany would have won after all...a sobering thought neutral Sisu your comment opens up another big old can of worms..those lovely Islamic people, so accepting of everyone elses beliefs and faiths and so on rolleyes Religion and testosterone, in my opinion the 2 largest causers of trouble on this planet sweatdrop

I think without being one united power, whatever countries made up the area occupied by the US wouldn't have stood a chance against Germany at the time. This goes beyond military power though, because without being united as it is, the US wouldn't even be as big of an economical or political power as it is. It all ties together in my opinion.

i hadn't considered the economic side..that's very true, America is a rich country, but it has terrible poverty too. without the general wealth of such a huge country behind them, the poorer areas would just collapse into chaos if they were their on their own. i wonder how areas that are in bad weather zones would manage without government funds to bail them out and help rebuild. and how the more rural, under populated areas would get along without being connected to country-wide telecommunications and all the other nation-wide benefits. It's a lot to think about and it's melting my brain a little on this Friday evening sweatdrop

You know... the USA seems to have more criminals and criminal deaths than almost any other country. Talk about "civilization". I am hugely disappointed in the USA.
But back to the name of the country. I can't help but think the namers were incredibly egotistical. "We are the United States of AMERICA." As if that is all of America and it is theres. From the beginning, they held themselves as superior. They still hold themselves superior.
Yet I think before too long the USA will no longer be THE superpower. It'll be in line. Which is a sad thing, but there is not enough value on morals and education. In Japan, for instance, you have to take entrance exams to get into high/secondary school, let alone a university. I am considered to be incredibly smart for the USA because I can write a better professional essay with barely any effort than most of the USA trying their hardest. The thing is... it's not that hard. I learned grammar from good teachers, and took a few advanced classes in English, so I was taught to write. Yet my friend's younger sister can barely put together enough words to write a book report.
That's a bit long...I guess that was a bit of a rant. But I do admire countries who push education more fiercely..

I have to admit that I'm a little opposed to your views Dragon, but I can understand where they come from all the same. I'm only going to comment on the naming bit, because I don't wish to get into an arguement over the United States and education with you.
I don't think it was meant to be "We are all of America". If you consider the fact that no other country in North or South America is broken up into States, then it could easily be "Hey, we're a bunch of States, and we're United.. so lets be the United States of America".. That's just my take on it, but maybe I'm just being an arrogant American. whee

Err... actually, Mexico is made up of 31 states.
I tend to be a touch pessimistic towards my country, so don't be afraid to argue a bit with me. By touch, sometimes extremely. So I try to keep that in mind, since I tend to be opinionated too.

Is it really? Hmm, I didn't know that. My appologize.
As for arguing--it isn't that I'm afraid to argue, it's that I'm not entirely in the mood to. neutral

Oi, I do know what you mean Jelly. My brain is currently doing very little thinking. One shouldn't be turned into so much mush after studying for just one little chemistry test!
I even had something interesting to bring up. But my brain killed it! I hate to ask this, but does anyone here watch Oprah?

I've watched Oprah here and there before, but never on a regular basis and I probably haven't seen it in a year or more.
