Obie allowed him to pull her down beside him and she relaxed back on the bench as she looked around. At his question, she looked at him rather sharply in surprise. That had come out of nowhere. Well, maybe not, she admited to herself, as they had been talking about family. But he had never asked her about her family before. Not so directly at least.
"Why?" she finally said with a small snort of nervous laughter as she turned her eyes back out towards the park. "I was a mistake there too. Some teenage mother who got in over her head," she said, repeating her parents' words almost word for word. She swallowed a little and took a deep breath.

Ra shrugged, he hadn't meant to upset her. "I just wondered. As we keep talking about family. I wondered if you were ever curious about them?"
He slipped his arm around her again and played with a strand of her hair. "Maybe they thought they were giving you a better life." He said, though he knew his opinion wasn't welcome. He didn't like it when she thought of herself like that.

Obie continued to stare out for a moment longer, before slowly looking back up at him. She shouldn't have snapped at him. It was far from being his fault and it wasn't like he had a mother to sit and chat with about her past.
"When I was younger I had a silly fantasy that it had all been a mistake and that they would come for me, but I grew out of that. No point in wishing for things that are not true. Besides... my parents made it clear that they didn't want me. They said that the girl wouldn't even look at me and the father wasn't even anywhere in the vicinity. So you can believe that if you want to," she said with a small shrug. "I stopped a long time ago." She gave him a wry smirk and shifted to lean her head down on his shoulder. But the floodgates had been reopened. Old thoughts and feelings started pouring out and she had no way to stop them. Closing her eyes she took another long, deep breath.

Ra ran his fingers through her hair and watched the children playing in the play park. "It must be hard, to only have his view of events." He said softly. he fell silent again. He wanted to ask her so many things, but he didn't want to upset her more. Especially not when she had his father to contend with still to come.

Obie kept her eyes closed and concentrated on the feel of his fingers through her hair. Frowning slightly, she opened her eyes at his words and looked out across the park.
"Even so... I wouldn't even know where to begin, short of asking my parents," she blurted softly, looking down to his lap and reaching out for his free hand. She ran her fingers over his. "And what if what they said was true?" she asked, looking up at him. She wanted to ask if he was ready to go back, but didn't want to push him and she wasn't all that excited about returning now either. Still, they both had to face the music sooner or later.

"At least you would know for sure though. Rather than always wondering." He smiled and shrugged again, placing a hand against her face. He watched her eyes for a moment and leaned in to kiss her softly. Breaking away he frowned and sat back against the seat. "I suppose we had better get back."

Looking up at him as he placed his hand on her cheek, she managed a small smile before closing her eyes to welcome his kiss. She hadn't realized how much she had missed that until now. When he pulled away, she watched him and gave him an encouraging smile.
"I suppose so," she smiled and rose to her feet. "It will be alright Ne-chan. I promise," she said softly, reaching for his hand.

Back at the house it seemed like nothing out of the ordinary had happened. The younger children could be heard screaming and shouting in the back garden and scents of BBQ-ing lamb wafted from the gate. His hand still in Obie's Ra opened the gate and they walked round the back.
"Ra-neeeeeeeee!" One of the girls cried charging up to him and jabbering away in Persian as she ducked behind him trying to hide from her brother. "Later." Ra told her with a smile disengaging her and stepping up into the house with Obie.
He dumped the bag on the kitchen counter and progressed through to the living room where his dad was stood drinking coffee and watching out the window. "Hi." Ra said in english. Dropping Obie's hand to hug his father and say a holiday greeting. "I want you to meet my girlfriend." He bagan. "This is Obsidian. We go to university together."
Parvaiz smiled and held his hand out to Obie. "Pleased to meet you Obsidian." He said nodding his head a little. "My name is Parvaiz. I'm sorry to have bypassed you earlier."

Obie ignored the growing knot in her stomach and smiled at the young girl who had sought refuge behind her older cousin. Chewing heavily on the inside of her lip was the only indication that she was getting exceptionally nervous as they made their way from the kitchen to the living room. When they stepped into the room, she had to wonder where Lahleh was and she glanced around as Ra released her hand and moved to greet his father. When he began to introduce her, Obie turned her attention back to the two men with a small smile.
"I'm pleased to meet you as well sir," she smiled and reached out to slip her hand into his. "And it's alright. No need to apologize," she said, biting back the smirk that wanted to fall over her lips. It almost sounded like a broken record around all of them. It amused her that they always seemed to feel the need to apologize for their actions, actions she would hardly deem as rude.

Ra watched his father, his expresion not as happy as it might have been.
"Parvaiz, please. Sir makes me sound like a school teacher." He smiled and looked between his son and his girlfriend. He could sense the hostility coming from Ra and the fear from Obie. "Lahleh, tells me you are studying medicine?" he asked taking a sip of his coffee.
Ra continued to watch him, waiting for him to finish his introductions and wondering where his mother was.

"Yes s..." she stopped herself from saying 'sir' and reached up to tuck some of her hair behind her ear to cover the blunder. "I'm looking to specialize in pediatrics," she continued, and glanced to Ra. Concern flitted across her brow at the expression on his face and she turned her blue eyes back to his father. She needed to calm down. He was just a person and he had helped in the raising of Ra. That had to stand for something. Pushing up a warm smile, she made herself relax.
"Pardon, but I forget what it is that you specialize in?" she asked with a smile, remaining on neutral ground.

"Emergency medicine." He said with another smile, one that resembled Ra's own. "So three insane people in one room." He smirked and looked to Ra. Recognising very well the look on his face.
Ra laughed half heartedly and looked back at his father. "Why are you here?" He asked flatly shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans. "Where's mum?" He asked in Persian.
His father's expression softened for a moment. "She's outside helping your uncle cook, didn't you see her?"
Ra shook his head and kept his stoney glare. "You still haven't answered. Why are you here? Why come all this way just to disrupt our celebrations when you clearly chose who you would rather be with."
Parvaiz placed his coffee cup on the table and placed a hand on his son's shoulder. "I was wrong Ra. I came to see you, your mother. I wanted to talk with her."
Ra stepped backwards and shook his head. "You made her go through a divorce, to deal with moving here all on her own and now you've changed your mind? I don't want you to hurt her or yourself again." He said turning to leave the room.

Obie laughed softly at his joke and followed his eyes to Ra. She frowned a little at the look in his eyes and watched him as he slipped into Persian. She watched the exchange between father and son. Clearly, Ra had not been completely honest with her about the concerns he had towards his father's return. Not that she was surprised in the least. She hadn't known him for two years and not realized how easily he buried things until they all came out unexpectedly. When he turned away, she kept her eyes on Parvaiz for a moment, then turned and reached out to grab Ra's arm.
"Ne-chan," she said softly, looking up into his eyes. "Remember what we talked about," she continued, searching his face. Even if she had not understood what they had said, she could tell that he wasn't even giving his father a chance.

Ra turned back to look at her and bit his lip for a moment. Taking a deep breath he kept his eyes on hers and turned to look at his father again. "Sorry." He said in english. "Just, please listen to yourself and not grandmother." He smiled a little and took Obie's hand in his. Those words were not just meant in relation to his mother.
Parvaiz nodded. "Thank you Rashne." He said. He took a breath and looked back to Obie. "I'm glad you found a girl to keep your head screwed on right." He said with a smirk. "How are you enjoying Eid Obsidian? He said in a well timed change of subject."

Obie smiled as he turned back to Parvaiz and apologized. Squeezing his hand gently, she turned back to his father as well. She smirked a little at his compliment.
"I'm enjoying it very much. It's been so much fun," she smiled warmly, relaxing considerably now that the tension in the room seemed to dissipate and his father didn't seem hellbent on being against their relationship.
