"Thinking about it," he admitted, running through a list of breeds in his mind, "Maybe a small dog, in the future though. Tossing a puppy and then a toddler into my apartment might not be the best idea." He would have liked a mid-sized dog, maybe a border collie, for himself, but he figured little girls would prefer toy dogs. But then again... He could use Gavin as justification for a bigger dog. "What do you think Gavin, should I get a dog? A big fluffy one with lots of energy?"

As if that question didn't even need an answer, Gavin let out an emphatic, "Yes! Fluffy good!"
Ina was fluffly. Hamlet was fluffy. Heck, he'd been told he was fluffy. If it was fluffy, it passed the test. Plus if there were bigger versions of Hamlet out there, he wanted to meet them.
Remi laughed at his reaction. "I guess you got yourself an answer there. But I agree, puppies and toddlers usually don't go well together, unfortunately. Unless you like rampant chaos. Maybe you could adopt an older one?"

"Yeah, that'd probably be a good idea. One that's already housebroken and all. Running a unbroken puppy down from the top floor whenever it needed to go out would be terrible," He added, keeping a sharp out for the diner. It was coming up, he'd nearly missed it distracted, but he had enough room that the turn in was smooth rather than jerky. Once he'd parked and started to take his seatbelt off, he looked back at Gavin, "Would you and your mom want to come to the pound when I go to get a dog?"

Well duh, he'd want to go. At least that's what Gavin was thinking. A place with lots of fluffy dogs? Of course! Again, he let out a loud, "Yes!"
Hey, it seemed to be Osha's favorite word. Couldn't he use it too?
"Really?" Remi asked, enthusiastic about the prospect of looking for a dog. Even more so, she was surprised he was offering to let them come. This was definitely a good sign. She unbuckled her own seat belt. "You'd let us come with you?"
She loved going to animal shelters and such to look at all the dogs and cats. Back in high school she used to volunteer at one. All the animals were just so friendly and loveable. You wanted to take them all home.

"Of course, it'd be fun," Quickly grabbing his keys and tucking them in his pocket, he got out of the car, "And besides, Gavin will probably spend as much time with it as I do." Well, he had to give himself some truth. He wasn't planning to just up and disappear on Remi, not that it would even be possible if he wanted to, and he figured Gavin would be a good permanent playmate. So why shouldn't they have a say in something like his dog?

Remi got out of the car with a warm, fuzzy feeling. He wasn't going to leave her, not that she thought he would in the first place. Just another irrational fear she could throw out the window. Not if he was planning on getting a dog that all of them would enjoy and love. She let out a mental sigh of relief.
"I'm sure we'd like that," she smiled, moving to Gavin's side of the car to unbuckle him. Lifting him in her arms again, she moved next to Stephan. Part of her wondered if the waitress would think of them as a family, and she had to keep from laughing. No need to jump that far ahead.
"Food there?" Gavin pointed. He'd never been in a restaurant before, but judging from the smell it had really good food.

"Yep, even pancakes," Stephan laughed, remembering the toddler's earlier exclamation. And waffles, bacon, eggs, and whatever else the boy's brain could dream up. "Maybe you could even get them to make you some smiley pancakes with whipped cream." Kids loved that stuff, hell he loved that kind of stuff. Anything to put a little fun into it. Walking a few steps ahead of them, he held the door open and waited, flashing three fingers at the waitress when she looked over at him.

"Pancakes!" Gavin squeeled, making Remi chuckle at his enthusiasm. She nodded a thank you to Stephan for holding open the door. Pancakes were sounding good to her too. She would have gone with waffles, but ever since her first meeting with Marc she couldn't look at waffles and not have her mind immediately jump in the gutter.
"Hopefully Gavin's wings don't attract too much attention," Remi said sheepishly, noticing a few curious glances from people nearby. She'd forgotten how something that was so normal to her could cause her and her son to be the center of attention elsewhere. It was making her slightly nervous.

"If people start staring too much I could go get my jacket from the car for him," he offered, following the waitress as she wandered toward an empty booth. "I'll take ya'll need a booster seat?" She asked, not really waiting for an answer before wandering off to go get one. Stephan slid into one of the seats, glancing down at the menu only briefly. All the talk of pancakes had him craving them now, so he didn't really have much to decide on.

"I think it's okay so far," Remi looked around to see how many people were actually looking. Fortunately most people were focused on their own meals. When the waitress returned with a booster seat, Remi nodded a thanks and set Gavin in it next to her so that he was closest to the wall. That way they could all eat without worrying too much about nosy glances.
Gavin preferred the booster seat over the whole highchair business. At least he could move around like this. The seat was squishy too, making him slightly unbalanced, but he'd have to deal with that as it came.
Remi took a bit longer to stare at the menu. She wanted pancakes, but didn't know what kind of pancakes. Blueberry was sounding good this morning.
"Chocolate pancakes!" Gavin pointed at the picture in Remi's menu.
"And I'm getting the blueberry pancakes," she added. "What about you?"

"Ahm... Strawberry pancakes for me, and a pot of dark coffee," he added, holding his menu up so the waitress could take it. Turning to Remi, he raised an eyebrow, "Dark, right?" He thought he remembered, but it was better to ask than risk making her have to pretend she liked something she didn't. "Milk for you Gavin? Or maybe juice?" They couldn't exactly give the kid coffee to drink.

"Dark, yes."
She smiled knowing that he'd remembered. Last night she'd remembered the flavor of pie, and this morning he'd remembered how she liked her coffee. She liked the trade-off starting here.
"Milk," Gavin nodded. Remi handed the waitress her own menu before relaxing into the booth seat.
"So do you have any specific breed of dog in mind?" Remi asked, bringing the conversation back to the topic of dogs.

"I was thinking some kind of collie, maybe a shepherd, what do you think?" He asked, stretching out in the seat. Collies were nice and fluffy, and occasionally orange, Gavin would like them, but they needed a lot of room. Of course, shepherds did too, but still. He could jog either breed around the complex, it'd be good exercise.

"A collie would be nice," Remi considered. Like Lassie. Gavin would like it purely because they were fuzzy. But from what she remembered they were very dependable dogs.
Gavin felt very out of the conversation. He didn't understand this talk of collies and shepherds. Neither could he tell they were even talking about dogs anymore. Silly adults and their big words and keeping him out of the loop. All he could do was look around, though there wasn't much of anything interesting. Wooden wall to his right, Mommy to the left, Stephan in front of him. He was going to get really bored soon. Gavin being bored is never a good thing.

"Yeah, loyal, calm, smart," he agreed, making a mental note to do some more research on collies. "Hey Gavin, what would you want to name a dog?" he asked, figuring he might as well get the toddler in on the conversation. That and his mind was kind of shorted for names. If it were up to him a collie would end up with a name like Lassie or Buddy.
