Not really, if 20 guardsmen were within attack reach when they charged, then they could get 40 attacks, to much for a 5 man Term squad to handle.

Yes but getting through their 2+ saves and whatever their toughnes is is quite an accomplishment.

How does the Guard beat it's opponents?

WEIGHT OF NUMBERS!

A squad of Guardsmen rapid firing their lasguns produces some dice and in close combat it's the same. The best thing is, no armour save will hold out forever, no matter the toughness or invulnerabilty of the opponent.

Now then, try imagining a full platoon of Conscripts rapid firing! Okay, does anybody around here have a hundred dice handy? Fifty Conscripts charging terminators, if they can't kill them with their 100 attacks, then they can always tie them up for at least a turn or two.

The one thing that bothers me as Guard player is that people expect me to pack my army with 20 lascannons or three Russ tanks. It's almost as if people want Guard players to pick such things only to point and say who's a noob. If I want to jamm 30 lascannons into an army, I'll pick Iron Warriors.

Anyway, I play Guard because they look great, have neat armoured support and are human! They represent us, think about that! Plus it gives a nice feeling to field and army of more then a hundred models, all arrayed in nice ranks, each platoon fluttering it's banner, the tanks ready to advance and shoot. Add to that some Command squad overseeing the army and it's ready to go and wreak havoc!

Thank you much Brookman.
I hate it when everyone looks down on the IG as the red headed step children of the universe. With the doctrine system,(Just remeber spacies, we had it first) you can make your IG into anything you want. How about a close combat army loaded with nastiness? I can think of three doctrines that make IG decent in hand to hand, Die Hards, Iron Discipline, and Hardened Fighters. Now my rank and file troops are weapon skill 4, ignore negative modifiers in close combat for being outnumbered, and can rally below half strenght if the vox operator is still alive. And when they charge? That is twenty two attacks if I can get them all into attack range. I don't care what your save is statisticly, I'll kill a couple of them.

And your 2+/5+ toughness 4 termies? I've shot to hell and gone whole squads of them with lasgun fire.. 30 hit, 15 wounds, 5 dead termies... I've done it too, and if you don't believe me, come to cheyenne and I'll stomp you a new one.

As to infantrymen...

they're the guys you get lucky with, of any race.

They're the ones you shoot a billion grot pistols at a Force commander in terminator armor, and get lucky by sheer number of dice.

my guardians have a tendency to take out full tactical sqauds in a turn.

ok, try this: this will simulate a 20 guy guardian squad shooting, then assualting a 5 man terminator squad.

1) Roll 40 dice: pick out the 4+ ones

2)roll the 4+ ones again. take out the 4+ ones of TAHT roll.

3) roll those dice: any ones mean a lost terminator.

4) now roll 40 dice again. pick out the 4+ rolls

5) roll those again, pick out the 5+ rolls.

6) roll those dice again, and any 1's is a dead terminator.

Last time i did this test, the termies were overkilled by about 7 wounds.
