's not far away! whee November.. That's Samhain for you guys, right? (Southern Hemisphere where I am is completley different - it'll be Beltane). Well, that's perfect! It's a new year, meaning that you can fully get launched into Wicca, get all your tools and become more independent. You can do your rituals with some candles in a park that you drive yourself to, instead of (supposedly) 'burning the house down'. whee Even more reason to look forward to Samhain.

Let's start with the questions: _1. What do you use it for mainly?
I mostly use incense right now to freshen up the smell of my room when it gets musty smelling (besides opening the window). Also use it for relaxation and reducing tension and stress.
_2. Are there any special incense flavors for certain spells? Most spells found in books will give you a suggestion for incenses to be burned with the spell, but you can also substitute a different one that is more in tune with yourself, or even make your own.
_3. What's ya fav? I would say my favorite incense is Sandlewood and Amber. I also like Jasmine and Cedarwood.
I also like making my own incenses. A magical supply shop near me sells a self igniting incense powder that you add your favorite herb resin, oil, dried herb to. It's fun to make different incenses that you can use for many different things. You can make an incense for cleaning the house, or even a different incense for each room. You can make an incense for each of the Greater Sabbats and Lesser Sabbats, and if they work very well with your ritual, make a note of the mixture and keep making it. YOu can also make incenses to sell or gift to other practicioners.

Well, let's keep this thread going, shall we? How about some suggested ritual uses for incense.
Cleansing is one of the most fundamental uses for incense. Foul odors can indicate a foul presence and incense has often been used to remove both at the same time (I've actually had to do this, and it really worked). Cleansing, or purification, is an important first step in many rituals. It is also a critical step in preparing sacred space. Cleansing is also a good idea whenever you acquire a new altar tool. You have no way of knowing who has handled them before they arrived to you, so cleansing is a good place to start whenever you add a new tool to your altar.
As stated before, creating sacred space is a very important step for rituals and this is perhaps the area of magic where the power of incense most greatly excels. The creation of sacred space is actually preparing a welcome and pure environment into which you can invite any deities or spirits that you wish. Simply burning properly empowered incense is enough to completely change the atmosphere of a space from the mundane world to a space where magic is welcomed. Truly, no ritual is needed, but sometimes it can help.
If you practice rituals inside a magic circle, they you know that "calling the quarters" is an important step in establishing the circle. Rather than going into a lengthy example of calling the quarters here, I'll just say that incense can play a valuable part in this process. If you place a censer or burner at each of the cardinal points of your circle, you can offer a different incense to each of the quarters. Some deities like it when we take the initiative and go looking for different ways to call them or grab their attention (in a nice way).
Hope this gives people some ideas.

Thank you. ^^ It's a good point about the incense around the quarters: candles are a little mundane admittedly, and there's a higher chance of doing damage if you knock them over.. sweatdrop Not done that yet, thankfully. What kind of scent would you use for fire, though?
To build on the 'foul precense' being there... Well, that translates to dirt, right? Dirt is negative energy, and if there is dirt on the spiritual plane... One word: eek. ninja

I myself have never actually used one in a spell or cleansing but I know that you can. It sort of depends on what exactly it is that your doing waether or not you use it. My favorite would have to be Dragons Blood, or something that smells of waterfalls, rain, or the ocean. Im a complete lover of the scent of water.. its a rather wierd obsession. Vanilla is good as well.

What kind of scent would you use for fire, though? Hmm, I'll have to go looking for a good fire incense. I haven't found one that especially speaks out to me, so I'm thinking that I'll have to create one for the fire quarter. I'll keep notes and post them here, if you'd like. It may take some time to find, though.

_1
I use it to calm myself or to make eveything smell great.
_2
You should only use corresponding incense in your spells. You wouldn't want to burn incense for attracting love if your trying to get rid of an ex-boyfriend.
_3 I like dragon's blood the best, and nag champa.

Incense is one of the very basic tools of Wicca, which may I remind you is what this guild is for. It is made of charcoal and various scents, so that when burned it produces a very spiffy smell.
You can buy it in most places, usually in stick format.
