A sefer torah is the big scroll with the torah written on parchment.

The process behind simply making one of the scrolls is so fascinating- incredibly long, intricate, and amazing. I wonder how much a scroll Torah would cost, though? At least thousands of dollars, I guess? People spend like a year on each one sweatdrop

(and one mistake means you have to start all over. yeah) codex versions of the torah have great sanctity (nothing other than another copy of it may rest on top of it), but a sefer torah, the torah scroll, is nothing short of holy. after completion, it's forbidden to touch the parchment with one's bare fingers, and if it's dropped, all present are obligated to fast every day for the next month.

Of course, we're talking about day fasts, that last only about 12 hours (from sunrise to sunset). A person has to eat to survive you know... rolleyes . It almost happened once in my Yeshiva... gonk The magbeah lost his hold on the sefer and was like... "s**t! eek " rofl . Thank G-d someone helped him 3nodding How about the sefer Torah of Ezra Ha'sofer? I'd say that could reach 8 figures easily. The really high priced ones are usually because the writer does a tvila every time he reaches G-d's name in the torah... Alot of work xd .

Silly question, I know, but if somebody wouldn't mind answering it: sweatdrop
Where would somebody learn how to write all of that? And what kind of training would they have to go through?

darkphoenix1247 Silly question, I know, but if somebody wouldn't mind answering it: sweatdrop Where would somebody learn how to write all of that? And what kind of training would they have to go through? how isn't very hard at all. it's just caligraphy, albeit extremely delicate. my father's currently writing (sofing?) a megillas esther. it's the skill, expenses, and time that are difficult. a sefer torah uses about 100 yards of parchment, cut into (usually) about 2'x2.5' pieces. that's alot of cow. also, it's a matter of personal devotion for the sofer (scribe). case in point: tefillah before inscribing the Shem
