The frog-teen grinned- wide, creating a spread of a smile that few would have seen the equal to.

"Hello! What business have you come upon?"

While the boys chatted, Crick came closer to the stripe-haired woman, smiling at her unique but beautiful visage. He noticed a whistle about her neck.

"And what would the lady be doing with a familiar whistle?"

Pierre grinned, glad to be a part of a conversation that did not include the babies of the caravan, or one of his mother's weird friends.

"Nah'much. Just trying to get my mother off my back, y'know?"

Emelyn, meanwhile, plucked the red whistle off her chest with a delicately hooked finger, holding it away from her on its leather string.

"Oh you mean this? I picked it up in trade long ago, and like the way it looks. I keep meaning to use it to call Pierre closer to me when he wanders- but keep forgetting to use it."

One gypsy from the opposite caravan had been sitting near her wagon all the while, almost unnoticeable as she sat, dawdling in the shadow of Blue Dawn, her home within the caravan.

She had not been purposefully watching the man who stalled atop his wagonseat- but rather, thought that her eyes were merely tired and that there was nowhere else to look but to that point. She did not realize until the girl came from the back of the wagon- that there had been a very definite reason for her focus upon that point.

The woman stood- awkwardly, for her legs were that of a bird's- and it was difficult to walk upon her talons. Their sight would be mostly covered by swaths of black material, but it was difficult to walk, nonetheless, as she hobbled forward to the man and his daughter.

"I am sorry... to come upon you like this," the woman said. Her voice was high and raspy, as if she had not spoken for weeks, and her face was mostly covered by a hood. Only a few gold and black feathers could be seen... and the protrusion of a golden beak, marred with black marks and swirls.

"I... am sorry," she said again, "But would you be... Annjette?"

They hadn't started walking yet when the woman approached them. Whether Voltaire was aware of the woman's staring to begin with was not known -- likely he wasn't, he too was weary and his mind was else where until Annjette came and interrupted him.

Still Voltaire smiled at the woman greeting her with a nod and not seeming to withdraw or look away because of the woman's appearance. He could see past such things.

Annjette did look away, but mostly out of simple innocent and playful shyness, "I..I am Annjette, ma'am," she replied softly biting on her lower lip for a moment before adding, "your voice...do you need a drink of something?"

Voltaire simply remained silent letting his daughter speak for herself.

"No, my darling," the woman said, just as scratchy. "I'm afraid there's nothing that can be done for my voice." She was touched by the child's kindness- and it made the subject of her vision all the harder.

"I have heard of you... from the meij." It was all she could think of to say- not knowing how to explain that she had been having nightmares for the past two weeks of an Unfortunette adult, bowed with the legs and face of a black swan, yet as emotionally unstable and angry as a human whose life had gone very wrong... that would come out of the north in the form of a child named... Annjette. In the dreams, her path was not set- but, were she not given some measure of control- she would become the most powerful Unfortunette ever born... and destroy much of the hope of the world.

"You are... just turned child, is that so?"

Crick laughed. "Well, not much good as a familiar whistle if you never USE it, aye? What are you waiting for... it will work in one area as well as in another, you know."

Meanwhile, Leax had been standing next to Lorelei- as if to claim her. And his words were still sweet.

"I have hopes that our wagons will stay together for a while. It's been a long time since I've come across such a wonderful woman. It would be a shame to say goodbye to you... so fast. Especially since I would recall your face for so much longer."

Lorelei ducked her head, shifting her weight to her other foot. "Ahhh..." was all she could say at first, embarassed and a little unnerved by his strange positive regard.

"Er.... thank you...." She wasn't quite sure how to respond.

Annjette smiled lightly at the woman's endearment. The girl took it in stride nodding her head in acceptance of the decline of drink. She stayed in her spot next to her guardian tilting her head as she listened to the woman speak. For a moment her violet eyes darkened and she went still saying nothing.

Voltaire gently nudged the girl, not being forceful with her to answer, but more to remind her that there are people around her still and that she wasn't alone.

The swan-girl blinked a bit before looking around and then back to the woman and nodding, "Yes, not too long ago...I..." she trailed off. A mask of shame grew over her features. What she had done scared and angered her. Angry not at those around her, but at herself.

"Ah, semita, I'm making you uncomfortable, aren't I? I don't know what quite's gotten into me. I just wish that we didn't have to part. ...Are you so enamored of this caravan, that you wouldn't want to- spend some time travelling with ours?"

"You changed. Well, then that deserves a gift- it's a birthday of sorts, isn't it?" She turned to Voltaire, who she had mostly disregarded till now. "I'm sorry to appear so," she said, "I was just startled to see her. I am Algonya. I mean the girl no harm. It would be right, if I gave her a present?" She asked.

Annjette blinked and tilted her head. She had never gotten a present from a complete stranger before. The swan-girl glanced toward her father to see what he would say as Algonya addressed him and introduced herself.

Voltaire blinked a bit and nodded a little, "I understand completely, I assumed if you wanted to harm either of us you would have attempted from the start. Instead you simply talked with my daughter, and despite what was said I do not feel ill will in your words."

He glanced over at Annjette and then nodded to Algonya, "Yes, of course a gift is alright, I think."

Were Algonya able to smile, she would have. Instead, she bowed her head from him with a low-spoken thanks. He was a tall man, and attractive- so very few gypsy males aren't so- but he had a certain authority and reason to him that would have made him an ideal sort to stare at and ponder over... were it not for her face, and all the horrors that came with it.

"But first, little one... you seem so angry. What happened to make you so?"

Lorelei's head shot up, and she stared at him. "Ah... the offer is tempting," she said after a moment, softly. "You aren't heading for Tempranillo, I take it? That would be a.... welcome change." She bit her lip, looking at Vanna who was staring back at her. "But... Vanna's home is here - she knows nowhere else. I just..."

"Alas, we are headed into the west." But her words, and hesitation... were encouraging. "If there is so little to tie you to this place, cannot the child make her home elsewhere?" His voice had become a near croon, soft and melodious, and he looked into the woman's eyes with an almost unreadable, unfathomable desire.

"No, the west is a much more desirable destination than the south. I have.... past there. And it is not quite.... pleasant." She looked down at the ground, kicking at the dust, afraid to meet his eyes - they frightened her, somehow.

But... Vanna did seem to like him very much... and he seemed to like her, Lorelei, very much as well. It was odd - she'd run away from her ancestral home for love. Would she run away from her new-found home for the same reason?

Voltaire smiled and went silent again. After all apart of growing up was speaking for yourself and not having others do it for you.

Annjette went silent a moment, this time trying to find the right words to describe what was going through her at this time, "It is because if what I did to the poor mouse. I almost killed it. It is still prone, I want to try and get it healed instead of burying it and letting it rot..." She looked down at her own flippered feet for a moment before saying, "What I did to the mouse was out of anger and fear. It...controlled me."

Stasha, still enamored with the young Kale, did not look up to see that his brother had enraptured Lorelei. If she did- she would have come up and separated them... just for the sake of them both. Leax, whose mother had been a Siren, and his father- the one they shared- a gypsy... was more choosy in falling in love than the regular Siren, but still... when he did, he was powerful, almost intoxicating, and his crooning voice would have the ability to twist wills, to bend them to his path. She would have separated them- giving them a chance to 'cool off', to let the power of the element of sound and music temper out. Or, perhaps she would have let them be. Leax had never had too strong a hold on any woman- soon, they would realize that there was more than mere simple attraction in the air, and back away.

But then again... she had never known that Leax would find a woman who lived in a wagon... filled with the element of music, or that she, too, had a special bond with sound.

Leax returned Vanna to her mother, then reached over, and kissed the woman once more, lingering there.
