xp okay, onto something else before somebody starts making perverted comments.... xd blaugh

What is the meaning for the Haftorah? I know it's not the Torah, but does that mean G-d didn't write it? I read portions in my Bat Mitzvah, and I know what's written in it, to an extent, but what's the meaning behind it? err...sorry- never really was told this one sweatdrop

the haftorah is a part from our bible. G-d didn't write any book, the torah was written by moses and the nach (Prophets & Hagiography) was written by the Prophets of that time.

we say the haftorah in shabos, as part of our preyer. it contains parts that are related or similar to the parasha, like similar events.

we are reading the haftorah because of the goys. the forbid us to read torah, so we desided to read in the nach instead, and when decree was canceled, we desided to keep it the way it was, and put the haftorah as a sign to the old decree.

P.S sorry about the spelling/grammer mistakes... sweatdrop

What about Judaism's views on birth control?

And views on abortion?

the entirety of tanach is considered Hashem's word because, although the actual action of writing was by human hands, all of it was either dictated or inspired (VERY loose term) by Hashem.

complex

less complex. absolutely forbidden, except when not abborting will inevitably result in significant danger to the mother's life.

In cases of rape, I wouldn't be so quick to say its forbidden...

Okay, it's complex. Anyone up to the task of explaining it? You can use long English words, and even the occasional basic Hebrew.

it's a grey area, because of the many variables involved. for example, method of birth control, living conditions (when the parents are not able to support another child), etc.

it's really something for which every individual case needs to addressed respectively, and by a posek.

Zonko, you and nathan, and maybe some others, should create like... a vocabulary list of words you guys use a lot and consider important. I know some, but not well enough to define them. You know, create a JGG dictionary of religious-related words or something? Like "posek" and "heter" and "assur". I'd hope everyone would know "rav", but it'd probably be a good idea to put that there, too. *shrug* I've run into "Jews" who've never heard of Passover. We need a basic tutorial on words you guys use to explain things! I followed that conversation... darkphoenix probably did, too... but, who all didn't? In my opinion, more knowledge is good.

And on that note, is it okay for a man to teach a woman Talmud? I'm thinking of asking the Chabad rabbi to teach me a bit. I know I can't learn it all, but... I'm taking biblical hebrew this year in college, and I want to learn some.
