You'll notice that a lot of people also have wolf totems as well. I'm not quite sure why, but it may hinge on the fact we are very familiar with those particular animals. We also tend to look to species we feel we have a connection with. For example, most people will have either a mammal totem or an avian totem. Both types are warm-blooded creatures that look after their young for some time. You really don't see reptile totems that much, unless you are pulling from Native American traditions or other traditions that have a reptile in a place of importance. We need to wrap our thoughts around mammals and birds. We tend to forget the insects, the reptiles, the amphibians, etc. We cannot forget that these animals are also very important in the world.

Is it possible that some people who think that they know their totems actually have a different one, like the reptiles or bugs?

Possibly. One should never ignore that which we are not familiar with.

Dragons are also mine cause i have always loved dragons and i have so many dragon statues in my room. One even holds my most precious swords exclaim Here is my horse

Recently the same thing has been popping up a lot.
The night before a big trip i looked at my bedside and the shadows made the outline of a lion sitting and watching the window.
Next i was at home going through all my old stuff and found a box of lion king stuff. My parrents said i was obsessed with them when i was little... they helped me relax.
Then i got to school and got a new book... the cover had a lion on it.
A few months ago... i anticipated Kingdom hearts 2 just because you get to play as a lion...
And then ... the next coupple times id turn on the tv.. .either a picture of a lion or id change the tv channel and it was a lion running around...
also many other small occourances have well occoured involving random timing and a lion picture, shadow or otherwise.
Could the lion be my animal totem?
(EDIT) another thing thats odd is i keep guessing the time that i will get a phone call, a song is at, or i get out of the shower (no clocks in the room but as i walk out i guess.) Just another weird thing.

mine is wolf. It's been the wolf since I was 7 and I saw my first wolf.
Anyways, squal_newblood-san, have you done any research on the lion? Ex. What kind of traits they symbolize, what kind of personalities are associated with them, what they have to teach you and other such things. I believe the lion is your spirit guide. And lions have so many things to teach! They very caring and loving of their families, they are amazing when it comes to team work, they are powerful, they are courageous there's so much to them! When you find yourself in a sticky situation, look to the lion for guidance. You will find an answer.

You may also want to remember that the different sexes of the same species can have different meanings as well. For example, there are differences in the symbolism of the male lion and the lionness. There are core elements that stay the same regardless of sex, but there are major differences as well. squal_newblood, think back to whether the lion was male or female. That may help you out. It also sounds like the lion has been with you for a decent length of time. Think back to when you were younger. Did lions hold the same fascination for you then? For example, as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with horses, unicorns, pegasi, basically anything remotely looking like a horse. One of my favorite plush animals was a unicorn puppet I received for Christmas one year. To this day, as I enter my 28th year, I have unicorn pictures on my bedroom walls, I share my bed with unicorn, horse, and pegasus plushies, and horse figures decorate my altar. Epona is one of my patron goddesses. I think it is safe to say that the horse is one of my totems/guardians. I have others, but horse is my main one. Hope this helps with your thinking.
Vampire_Aireanna: nice chestnut. Is it a Quarter Horse?

Interesting. I wonder if anyone else has something similar for an animal totem, besides the usual dragon or unicorn.

Roufette Is it possible that one could help me find my animal totem? I'm getting frustrated, and it's botching my sleep. If someone could help or...something, I'd really appreciate it. I would try meditation or some similar technique to find your totem. You are not trying to focus on a particular animal. Your particular animal will find you. Try and think about different animals that either you have found yourself attached to or the animal shows up all the time. I'm not talking about just the last year or so. I'm talking about your entire life. For example, Horse has been with me since my birth. Bear showed up about the age of 5. Hawk and Dragon have been recent additions within the last 8 years. These are some of the permanent ones. It's a feeling I get from them, kind of like they are going to be with me from here on out. I don't know if there is a set number a person should have. Personally, I think it varies from person to person. Hope this helps.
