Zane wasn't exactly tall or wasn't tall compared to the giants that seemed to populate the island. He stood at a measly five feet and eight inches and really, any girl of a standard height probably stood taller than him in heels.
He didn't seem to mind that much though.
Hands slipped into his pockets and he shrugged at her. "Friend," and he used the term friend loosely, "signed me up, figured I'd come." It was pretty basic when he said it aloud. "Seems like a pretty nice turn out." The first question on the tip of his tongue was to ask her how long she'd been here but the rules stated that was a no-go. "You seem big on the whole make up hair and outfit, how long's it take you to get all glammed up?"
Okay so maybe that wasn't his best topic but it seemed easiest.
iloveyouDIE do I need to grab zane's image?

Gretel had looked at the hand reached out to her for quite a long time before she shook it, barely touched. Her eyes twisted as the word "speed date" entered her ears, just a flash hard to catch. The trainee found Arland's words hard to follow, she'd understand each word when they are said separately, but not put together. She adjusted her lavender colored frame, slightly confused for how simple the task seemed to be. It felt weird but if it was needed for her workplace, she would do it. A random talk for five to ten minutes, Gretel guess it would be fine. When the man tossed her a question, she immediately changed her mind. "Um." She touched the bridge of her glasses again, not sure what to say. "I-Iron man, maybe?" She frowned in uncertainy, it wasn't something she had thought before. She dropped her hand, "I admire his intelligence." In normal situation, she knew she should ask him back, so she awkward added, "and you?" after around five to ten seconds later. Skye Starrfyre It's fine, she's pretty chill most of the time.

Gretel admired intelligence. That was a good thing to know, and one of the reasons why he liked opening up with a question like that. A person's favorite superhero could often say a lot about who they were and qualities they either admired or found important. "Me?" He wasn't used to getting asked that question back, though. Usually the conversation stuck on what whoever he was talking to enjoyed so he could get to know more about them-- he was rather dull, all in all, under all of the personality that he put into his exterior. "Uh... I'd say Batman, just because who doesn't love the Dark Knight, but when it boils down that's all a rich boy and his issues. So... Gambit. From the X-Men? He's charming, a bit of a smooth talker, but he's also dedicated and determined." Attractive. Remy LeBeau was also attractive, and he usually did pretty well with the ladies. "If this was Hogwarts instead of, well, what it is... What house would you have been sorted into?"

"Never did speed dating either." Ever shook his head a tiny bit, shifting to drop down opposite Ace. He didn't lounge, exactly; didn't have that same cool elegance that Ace seemed to. Instead, Ever leaned forward, arms looped loosely around his knees, boots carefully off the pillows. "Mostly just bars or clubs. And then Tinder, once someone explained it to me...and very few of those were actually really dates." The idea seemed to amuse him, head cocked to the side as he took in Ace's expression. "Your eyes look amazing, by the way."

Oliver was still a bit confused, and any relief he felt when his partner found him was headed off by even more confusion. He had never been to a team-building exercise that involved less than casual dress, but Kade seemed not only comfortable, but confident with the situation. "O-Oliver Keeley," he stammered slightly, introducing himself unnecessarily with a timid smile. His handshake in return was a betrayal of that meek impression, his grip was firm, and his hands were scraped and cut in places. Glancing around at the group, the freckled young man scratched the bridge of his nose where it was crossed by a faded scar. "Ah, now what do we have to do? I'll admit I... I'm not entirely sure what's going on, I didn't know anyone had signed me up for this until this morning..."

Nick had indeed noticed the slight gender assumption, but was entirely unphased. It was more accurate to assume she was a guy anyway, rather than a girl who did all those girly things like hair braiding and friendship bracelets... Why sit around painting your nails when you could go outside and actually DO things? "'Sup," she said again, this time including the other three, and still working hard on this whole not swearing too much thing. After a moment of awkward silence, she glanced down at her clothes. What even had she decided to wear again? Slowly she looked back up at Lena. "Good, you've got fuc- uh... cool hair," Nick finally replied. Wow this whole polite social thing was hard. Ghouliboo Have a Nick! This art was from when she was older, but it's mostly her height that's changed. XD

The tall trainee chuckled lightly at Ever, it was quite a mystery then the definition of dates on the island. Ace didn't mind the format of it as long as he was able to meet new people, he was quite sociable in nature. "You don't find it weird?" He looked obviously happier, but arched an eyebrow at the compliment. Exaggerate reactions gave him fun, however, he liked people who know how to appreciate his interests. It was a strange thing to assume man shouldn't do make-up. His facial features might be feminine, his demeanour did not. He lived very freely without the interference of his parents, that could be a merit of being an orphan. Ace looked at the hunter and said, "I like you, maybe we can have a small talk. Not sure what they mean 'speed' but I guess it has something to do with time?"

It might be that she was in an unfamiliar situation that she didn't realize she was being pried on. It would be an uncomfortable thing for Gretel if she was aware of it, however Land had made it worked somehow. The one name from the man's mouth was gladly someone she knew a bit of, thus she could nod and add a comment like "He overcame his fear by himself, he's a brave man." However the second one was less familiar and she had to guess, "The - poker man.....? The mist trainee was relieved when her partner quickly changed the topic. "Ravenclaw." Her answer was of absolutely certainy and confidence. The speed of her reply was within one second, it seemed to be something she knew so well. Who would hate Harry Potter series, seriously? The concept of hunter and sentiment weapon were magical enough and after joining, she learned that Halloween truly existed. Based on the little information she had about Land, it was impossible to guess which house he'd be. "By the way, I'm from the mist division." She gave the hunter a glance, quietly waiting for him to give his part of answer.

"Hufflepuff." He answered just as quickly when he realized that she was waiting for a response. Of course, he didn't actually know if she wanted to know what division he was in (something they weren't supposed to be discussing) or if she too wanted to know what House he would have been sorted into. He glanced around, making everything seem a bit more secretive as he leaned in before answering the second part. "Moon, although... We're not supposed to be discussing 'work' so maybe we can keep that between the two of us? You're pretty good, though, with the whole mind-reading-- figuring out that I was curious about your division too." Arland leaned back, glancing around once more to make sure that no one had noticed the little 'rule break'. "Your shoes are cute-- Style's called saddle shoes, right? Always wanted a pair myself. Thought they'd go nice with a suit or something." Not that he wore suits. Or ever had a reason to wear one, especially now.

Jolene gave Joy a blank stare, had this somehow not been a top ranking outfit? It seemed like a top ranking outfit to her. In any case she tried to just smile and nod then focus elsewhere in the conversation. "To tell you the truth, I thought it was just a meet and greet thing." "Maybe it's simply a misnomer?" The pillows and lack of actual seating though made it seem like it was a dating thing, too, but she decided not to chime in about that thought. She went over and tried to very uncomfortably sit on a pillow. This was definitely too low to the ground but she pretended it was okay for now. "I've never experienced a regular date, let alone a speed date so um... I don't know honestly? Do we just talk?"

Ever hummed just a little, lacing his fingers together and mulling that over. "I mean, the goal is to meet a lot of different people in a short amount of time, I think. Which really isn't that different from a club -- you dance here, you dance there, you hang out at the bar, someone buys you a drink, you buy someone a drink --" He paused, just a second, to look around and make sure there weren't drinks here. No, alas. He should have come better prepared. " -- and if you have a problem with 'a bit weird' you probably shouldn't be there at all, right"

In Gretel's mindset, the speed dating was a sort of orientation and it was strange not allowed to talk about their division. She didn't even realize she had broken a rule, the huntress gave Land another glance considering if Hufflepuff was a serious answer. She felt strange when the hunter suddenly checked around and told her his division in the form of a whisper. Gretel nodded at the weird rule and agreed to keep it a secret. From his words, she was unsure if he was making compliment of her vigilance and chose not to reply. He mentioned about her shoes, so she looked down to give them a look. "Uh huh. I like their neat and classy design. It's easy to mix-and-match. They do go well with formal wear." Gretel nodded sincerely, she didn't bring much with her when she left her home, the oxfords were one of her favourite. Her eyes quickly caught the colorful bracelets Land was wearing and tossed him a question. "You know how to braid bracelets?" Skye Starrfyre THANK YOU! (I misread it as "might" but actually it's "might not" orzlll AAAAAnyway, we can assume it's gretel's fault, not mine!

Melody looked relieved, both because now she had her date's full attention, and because she hadn't seemed too desperate with her reasons for being there. For which he had an excellent point - really why else would all these people be here unless they were also in her shoes? Perhaps not all of them, but enough that it wasn't just her. "I have a collection, this is just my favorite dress right now-" and then it dawned on her what he'd just said. He. Said. "Wait, you have skirts and dresses too?" She was trying not to look him over but she totally looked him over in confusion. "Mostly France and Japan so far, They have such cute... out...fits..." She was still a little hung on things though. "I'm sorry, would it be rude if I asked you a question about your... dresses...and skirts and...?" she eyed him over this time on purpose, and trying to indicate him too.

Ace nodded while imagining as Ever explained the objective of speed dating. As an orphan, bar or club wasn't a luxury he could afford. He worked at one before though, that helped him perceived what it was like and followed the man's words without much difficulty. He laughed, "Of course not me. People in general was what I refer to. But - I guess it does not apply here. A drink would be great, I would say the host do it on a whim so everything looks rushed. At least he's considerate enough to give us name tags." The tall trainee pulled his shredded tank, the sticker had limited area to adhere onto the fabric. "I might be one of the few people who tried to talk to the shadow, got it angry and burned down where I lived." Ace leaned close, whispered near the hunter, his warm breathe blew against the hunter's skin. It was supposed something they should not be talking thus the trainee told quietly. He said it as an example of "weird". It luckily didn't last long, "A homeless man thus became a hunter." The tall trainee leaned back and shrugged casually.

"Oh, well." Ever blinked a couple times, genuinely startled, and then tipped his head to the side. "Well, I know what you mean, kind of? I spent some time between homes there, for a bit. But clubs were my bread and butter, because you could always get someone to take you home, and then at least you weren't sleeping on a subway bench..." He trailed off at that, eyebrows going slightly puzzled. "This is a bit deep. I'm not sure if it's appropriate for me to say in a supposed date."
