[3. Cross a 'moat' by navigating across platforms. The moat is as deep as an adult's waist and filled with water. Direction roll]

<> Acriculeth asked, drawing back slightly to give A'nos a moment's pause.

A'nos nodded. <> He hoped things kept going as well as they had so far, he really didn't fancy a dip in that water. According to Acriculeth it looked rather muddy and he rather liked the shirt he was wearing.

3. Cross a 'moat' by navigating across platforms. The moat is as deep as an adult's waist and filled with water. Match roll]

A'nos stepped up onto the first platform and from there quickly to the second. It was like dancing really, only your leading partner was a dragon and situated a couple of 'lengths away from you sitting perfectly still. A'nos hummed a tune to himself, hopping from platform to platform without hesitation. When he came to what Acriculeth indicated was the last one he did a little twirl and then jumped back onto solid ground to the sound of applause and cheering. <> he chuckled to his bondmate as he headed for the next challenge.

[4. Colour a picture with chalks on a large chalk board. Direction roll]

<> A'nos said as he picked up the chalks.

<> Acriculeth replied, tilting his head to the side as he studied the board A'nos was to colour in. He felt... slightly less certain about how to get his rider to get this done nicely but he wasn't going to let that put him off. <>

[4. Colour a picture with chalks on a large chalk board. Match roll]

<> A'nos agreed, raising his hand and waiting for Acriculeth to steer it as he had his legs. After a little hesitation the dragon did so, feeling into A'nos' mind for how the task ought to... to flow as it were. There was a rhythm to art just like there was to walking, it was just one he was less familiar with. Luckily however, much as he wasn't a dedicated artist at all, A'nos' body knew enough to colour in a simple picture very competently indeed and soon enough Acriculeth was directing him to move on again to another burst of enthusiasm from the spectators.

[6. Throw a ball at a target. Direction roll.]

<> Acriculeth nudged his rider fussily a half step to the right. <> Calculating throws also wasn't something he felt too sure about, perhaps even less so than art. He could direct his flame with ease but he was not in the habit of throwing things with accuracy. The only throwing he did was in the strength contest and all you had to master with that was 'forwards'.

[6. Throw a ball at a target. Match roll.]

<> A'nos asked.

<> the bronze replied.

A'nos nodded. <>

Acriculeth shrugged to himself and withdrew slightly from his rider's mind. <>

A'nos nodded again and threw the ball. A moment later he heard it hit the target and there was applause again, though not quite so loud this time. <> he asked rhetorically.

<> Acriculeth said with a small feeling of approval, it might not have been as good as some throws he'd seen but he knew it was better than it would have been had he tried to steer as he had for the previous tasks.

[7. Finally, navigate a hay bale maze. The maze is winding and geometric in patterning and is approximately 6 feet tall. Direction roll]

Now it was time for the final task. A'nos tried to relax back into acquiescence, which wasn't any easier now than it had been before. Perhaps he would practice it however, it seemed to be useful. <>

<> Acriculeth agreed with a mental nod, it was a skill that should go both ways he felt.

[7. Finally, navigate a hay bale maze. The maze is winding and geometric in patterning and is approximately 6 feet tall. Match roll]

<> A'nos exhaled slowly. <>

It was not quite the shining success that some of their early tasks had been, A'nos mind was busy turning over the possible uses of honing this skill. He would have thought that would make it easier for Acriculeth to direct him but apparently a busy mind caused mild interference and a couple of times he moved in the wrong direction and found himself having to fend off a wall with his hand.

Neverthless they competed the course in good time and A'nos turned to wave at the crowd as he exited the maze. "That was fun!" he said to the adjudicator who was waiting for him at the end. "I don't know why we don't do this more often." Well they didn't do it more often because it was expensive, it was chaotic, practically no work got done that wasn't to do with the games, people were hungover for days afterwards, there were fights, thefts, and all that sort of thing. It was however jolly good fun all round and a brilliant excuse to show off!

[5. Spin 10 times then pin the tail on the dragon.]

J’nes spun in place, not bothering to count the turns because he quickly lost track of how many he’d done anyway, until Hatteth told him, Stop. When he did, Hatteth added, No, one quarter-turn more. So J’nes turned more slowly until he heard, That’s it. Now, straight forward.

J’nes held up the tail pin-first and started walking forward. Going straight was of course challenging because he’d grown dizzy, but he focused on putting one foot in front of the other and trusted Hatteth to tell him when to stop.

Sure enough, in a few moments he heard again, Stop. Raise your hand a bit more, and move it to the right. Hatteth directed his hand until he was told to push it in.

Perfect, Hatteth told his rider as he dropped his hand. Now turn right and walk that way a little while. The next portion is not far away.

Hatteth: 7
J'nes: 7
Result: perfect success!

[6. Throw a ball at a target]

As J’nes headed for the next area, Hatteth was quiet for a bit. Long enough that J’nes was about to remind his dragon that he needed some direction, but before he could say that, Hatteth finally spoke. This one will be harder to direct. You need to throw a ball at a target.

J’nes thought that over. So I guess you point me in the direction and tell me about how far it is? Then I have to hope I throw it with the right amount of force.

That sounds about right, Hatteth agreed. Now stop, the table just to your side has a bowl with the ball in it. J’nes felt around for the bowl, then the ball, while Hatteth tried to judge the distance.

[6. Throw a ball at a target]

J’nes hefted the palm-sized ball and passed it between his hands, trying to get a feel for the weight of it. In a moment Hatteth said, Well then, hold up the ball so I can see where you’re pointed. J’nes pulled his arm back into a throwing position, then held it there. Not quite right, take a step to the left…a little more…good, now the target is on a board about half a dragon-length in front of you, and at about the height of your stomach.

J’nes tried to mentally picture the distance, then moved his arm a couple times in practice throws. He wound up one more time and threw, hoping he’d get near the mark. A moment later he heard the soft thock of the ball hitting something.

Well done! It didn’t hit right on the target, but it hit the board, hatteth told him. Very good for throwing blind. Now continue on, there is just one more portion.

Hatteth: 3
J'nes: 4
Result: +1: Excellent attempt

[7. Finally, navigate a hay bale maze. The maze is winding and geometric in patterning and is approximately 6 feet tall. ]

J’nes continued on, asking Hatteth, So, what’s the last event?

This one is a maze made of hay bales, stacked to around the height of your head, Hatteth answered. Guiding you should be simple enough, but I have to figure out the route. The dragon studied the maze, trying to trace possible pathways as his rider approached.

And we have no time for me to pause while you look, do we? Since this is a timed event, J’nes commented.

True, was the reply. But I think I see a possible path, or at least one that ought to get you started in the right direction. Now, to get to the entrance, angle a bit more to your left…
