Alyx led the way into the next room. Inside was an amalgam of all of the horrible things in this dungeon... A gloomcat, and three beetles. FOUR monsters of the most irritating type... He groaned and sagged, staring into the heavens. Why? Why! Why ME!? There was no way out of the dungeon, though, without going through these monsters... So they had to do it. Alyx breathed a long sigh and shifted his grip on his new shield, drawing Gloomshard from its sheathe hidden in the back of gloomguard. He could maybe do an appreciable amount of damage here, but he mostly wanted to just control the damage here. This would be a decent-length fight, so they couldn't afford to be nickel-and-dimed here. Even scratch damage could build up over time to cause significant injuries if one was not careful enough to control it. He noticed that his health bar was a different shade of green than it normally was. He had a small symbol next to the bar that he recognized from the potions that he'd drank while fighting the Gloomqueen. He'd read about the alternate dungeon having special effects that made it more difficult than it otherwise would be. Could this room be enchanted to heal players? That would be incredible. He saw small motes of green light in the air, that bathed the whole clearing with a soft lime light. But wait... If those motes of light were healing him... He looked at the monsters. He could see the same status on their health bars. "Do you feel that? I think these motes of light are granting us vitality... Be careful, they might not be too picky on who exactly receives that benefit." Alyx decided that the best thing to do in this particular situation, though, was to deal with the most dangerous mob here. The beetles were cowards, but the cat was cunning. It might wait for a weakness to open in their defense that it could exploit. Alyx decided to pull out his oldest trick. "Spiderweb smash." Gloomguard began to glow as Alyx watched, aiming a strike at the gloomcat. "We need to take the cougar out, first. We can't afford to let it get into cover." He raised his shield and rushed toward the gloomcat. With any luck, he'd wrap it up and keep this fight from dragging on for too long.

Alyx' shield shined brightly as it struck the gloomcat, and tendrils of web wrapped the animal until it could no longer move. It struggled against the webs as Alyx jumped back to allow Rota room to maneuver his massive blade. With a speed belying the blade's size, Rota carved through the cat and dispatched that particular headache with ease. Unfortunately, to the dismay, I'm sure, of everyone involved, out of the should-have-exploded-but-didn't-because-it's-a-b*****d-cat, two more I-can't-stand-these-stupid-gimmicky-little-shits-cats appeared. Alyx groaned. He didn't have enough juice for another spiderweb smash, and he wasn't totally convinced that he could kill one, even with any of the tools that he had in his 3-AP-is-all-I-have armory. Somehow, they had to get rid of those cats, though. Even if they were smaller, the beetles that they'd fought hadn't seemed any less capable in combat after they'd divided. He had to assume that these cougars were not going to be much diminished in that regard either. Still, he had to do something to stop them from drawing this fight out any longer than it absolutely had to be. He decided that he'd just throw a single attack at the cat that decided that it would be fun to gnaw on Rota's armor. Alyx aimed for the shoulder of the animal, hoping to drive the point of his sword into its chest cavity.

This dungeon was his punishment for being so fortunate as to have made weapons of such high caliber, it had to be. Nothing else could explain the string of karmic BULLSHIT that he was dealing with. He had to conserve some stamina right now. The beetles had seemed way easier to kill once they had split so hopefully that translated to the cats as well. If so, his standard skill should be all he needed to destroy them before they could run. The tentative light was somewhat fleeing his sword, as if tying not to get absorbed by it as the whispers in his mind were becoming very excited. Rota felt like he should get that checked out sometime soon. It didn't seem healthy. He aimed a stab at the cat that looked like it was fleeing the battle. He could not have that right now. he stayed nimble, as the whispers were also foretelling danger from a few sources. he didn't need to take unnecessary hits right now. Alyx' blade did manage to puncture the cat, and the cat lost a considerable amount of health, but it was not quite dead. Stepping forward, Alyx sought to drive his sword further into the animal, his boot crunching the leaves on the floor of the dungeon as he threw his weight against the weapon. At the very least, as long as he had it impaled, it couldn't very easily run away without tearing a jagged hole in its abdominal sac, so he had that going for him. And, hopefully, if he managed to keep his sword in it, it wouldn't start healing. "I've got this little b*****d, you start working on those things." Alyx jerked his head in the direction of the beetles, one of which was trying to scramble its way away from the action, its legs struggling to get traction on the loose leaf coverage of the Gloomwood floor. Soon, it would gain traction, though, and maybe it would just go away. Part of his strategy in dealing with the cats first was really to give the beetles the chance to run away before he and Rota had invested any time or energy into them. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to have run away from the bait, so the Gloomking and the Demon Artisan were just going to have to handle the problems the hard way.

Alyx drove his sword through the itty bitty kitty, piercing the earth as he threw his full armor-plated weight down into Gloomshard, causing the final death of the feline monstrosity. Rota 'dispatched' a beetle, causing it to split into --you guessed it-- two more beetles. Surprise! These monsters are stupid. That's the surprise. Not much of a surprise, but it's there. Alyx went back on the defense. These beetles had armor that was too thick for him to really do any damage through, so he would just let Rota do as Rota does. Shifting the weight of his shield to get a better grip, he trained his eyes on as many of the beetles as he could see, attempting to give Rota as much room as possible to do his work. If they kept this pace up, it wasn't long before they were through this and on to the next room, which, presumably, was filled with giant sheep that could walk on walls and spit acid. He was really starting to hate this dungeon, and all of the bullshit that it was full of. He thanked what Gods there were that his own trip into the dungeon had been short and to the point.

Less he had to deal with the better. One of the split beetles had decided to try running, and the other one had decided to strike at him. He decided that that one needed to die right about now. One of the larger insects had successfully fled the battle, and Rota retaliated against the economy-size beetle that crashed into Alyx' shield by installing suicide doors. Alyx was fairly certain that that voided the warranty, but when it comes down to it, you just can't beat style. Alyx had been rocked by the hit he'd taken when he jumped between Rota and the aforementioned dead thing, and he had to take a few steps to get his balance back. Having this many opponents spread out and constantly running back and forth really made his job difficult. It didn't help that the beetles kept 'running away' and then skittering back into the fray like they were really horny --or hornèd-- puppies, and Alyx and Rota kept pretending to throw the tennis ball that they totally for-really-reals threw this time. It was kind of an irritating mechanic, because as soon as you were ready to write one of them off as out of sight, it came charging back into the fight with a brand new message for your spleen, marked with "signature required on delivery." To be totally honest, though, Alyx' spleen was a pretty conservative, reclusive organ. It didn't like getting packages, and especially not the sort of smut that these horny bastards were peddling. That actually went for most of Alyx' organs, suspiciously. Might explain why he was a solo player for so long. Where were we? Oh, yeah. Combat. That little s**t was trying to get away. Or pretending to... Something in Alyx sort of snapped. "STOP SQUIRMING YOU WORM!" Alyx charged with his shield aglow, aiming a full-power spiderweb smash at the smallest of the extant beetles.

Alyx seemed to have the other one handled so he decided to move on to bigger and badder beetles. He wreathed his blade in light again and charged at the remaining large beetle, jumping into the air and slashing vertically downward. This should finish it off if history was to remain constant. He really wanted to be done with this, and each of these beetles were really wearing on him. Why did they all have to split? it had to be a trait associated with the rooms themselves, since the cats had been incorporeal in one room and split in this room. So why did karmic retribution decide that he had to endure it again?
