You can make a roll if you'd like, but this isn't something, with the information presented to you thus far, I can adamantly say "Give me a ________ roll!" yet. You'll have to use whatever skill you think appropriate, or simply investigate the old fashioned way.

There is no pulse on the barmaid any longer.

Aelgeirr, if any attacks on the town are by unintelligent beasts like this centipede (eww, it's oozing), any shelter would probably be sufficient. It only came into the tavern when the door was opened by you guys, if you recall.

Mikah, your ears are trained enough to pick up distant sounds of conflict; this isn't just one source either, but you hear different kinds of sounds from probably different points in the town. It probably didn't help that the entire tavern's surviving population just emptied in the streets either. The rest of you passively hear bupkis.

Mikah, the faithful seeker.

The girl didn't had time to think when she heard what seemed to be more fighting.- I hear struggle... All around!.- The girl stood back up and realized, she wasn't in the best shape either. She felt dizzy as the adrenalin effect wore off. The girl barely managed to grab a hold of a chair not to fall face first on the floor.- I'm... a bit tired...- She took a deep breath and regained her posture.- We need to go and find out what is going on. Should we take the kid with us?.

"Then...let us go fight!" Ambra would suddenly shout at Mikah's announcement She seemed to be getting a hold of herself, though was still quite broken up. As Mikah caught her breath Ambra would look down at the barmaid and sadly stammer. "She...she she gave me water instead of ale...It happens to me a lot. " A weak laugh would escape her lips though it sounded more pained then anything. "I..I don't want to see anyone else get hurt tonight...so I'll fight! For her sake...and those we can still save."

Pulling her cloak around her, Ambra would begin to make for the door.

Making sure he had his things, Aelgeirr opened the door. "They'll be fine enough if we shut the door tightly behind us....so....on we go!"

Dwalin Vikramsson
Captain of The Guard

Dwalin grabbed his warhammer that was leaning against the chair he was sitting in originally then went to pull the shield from the ground where Mikah put it, after checking he had everything in order he spoke up I'll be outside in a moment, just need to grab something." The dwarf then went over to the bar and grabbed four random bottles of alcohol, putting them in his bag and then heading out of the inn to meet with the others, closing the door behind him.

((Window of opportunity to spend healing surges is now closed!))

As the four of you make your way outside the tavern it was... well, chaos.

There were large, ferocious creatures battling with town guard and apparent militia here and there. Those with military experience might be able to tell that it seemed to be more of an attack of wild beasts rather than something organized; case in point, as a pack of wolves seem to keep dividing their attention between some people with spears and a giant lizard. It seems like poor strategy to use soldiers that can't tell friend from foe.

"HALT! Wait!" a man would call out, in military-issued armor and a heavy crossbow. He would aim his weapon at you... then, fire a bolt, several feet over your heads. A giant bat swoops down and crashes into the ground just ahead of you, thrashing from its injuries from the impact, a bolt lodged in its chest. The man draws a short sword and coup de graces the animal. Then, he proceeds to walk over to you four. He was a human with dark hair, who seemed fairly calm and steady despite everything.

"It's not safe out here, you need to get into shelt... wait, are you adventurers? If so, we need your help to get the people off the streets! We need to get everyone inside, then we can wait this out until dawn! Can I count on you to do this?"

Dwalin Vikramsson
Captain of The Guard

"What's going on here soilder, why are these beasts attacking and more importantly why are you so calm about this situation?" Dwalin was determined to get some awnsers ever since he arrived it had been bugging him that the town didn't have much of a guard protecting it with how far away it was but he had to help, it was just in his nature to help people in need. He got his warhammer as shield ready as he spoke "You can count on us to help. Ambra, Mikah go help get the civilians get to safety Aelgeirr let's help keep these beasts back. His voice was commanding as his years as the captain were now showing.

"That would be Lieutenant to you, soldier," the man would say, becoming stern-faced. "As for your other question, there is not time to explain it, not now. Help us out and you'll have your answers. Please, do as I ask, and get everyone else to safety, then yourselves, so we can follow suit and minimize casualties. You're not in command here, so follow orders, or just stay out of the way."

What will you all do? He's currently re-arming his crossbow, and he looks eager to get back into the fray.

"R-right!" Ambra would shout, a bit dumbfounded of the chaos going on around them. "I'll try get people to safety!"

Ambra could feel her adrenaline begin start pumping again, causing her distraught emotions to momentary subside. She surveys the seen around her to look for people to help and a safe place to lead them.

Mikah, the faithful seeker.

With a slight nod of the head, Mikah acknowledged the instructions and followed after Ambra, Bow ready and eyes wide open to spot anything that might become a menace.

Aelgeirr would merely nod and draw one of his hatchets. The hatchet could take care of most situations in a close fighting environment better than his spear.

Dwalin Vikramsson
Captain of The Guard

"It doesn't matter who's in charge in a situation like this, what's important is getting everybody to safety now get out of the way so we can help unless you wanna waste even more time talking." Dwalin got his shield and warhammer ready for another battle as he stared up at the man infront of them.

The soldier before them would kind of blankly stare for a moment. "Y-yeah... um... thank you?" He would cough once, covering his mouth with his fist, before lifting his heavy crossbow. "If there's a way you four can fire off a signal when your finished, that will be our withdraw signal."

SKILL CHALLENGE

Objective: Find townsfolk still in the streets, and get them to take shelter!
Complexity: Level 4 (10 successes before 3 failures)
Primary Skills: Perception (moderate DC), Diplomacy (moderate DC), Stealth (moderate DC)

For this skill challenge, you can attempt to use Perception to locate hidden townsfolk, Diplomacy to convince those you meet to head indoors, or Stealth to guide the party without confronting any monsters.

For the new players: You can roll any of the Primary Skills (since you know they will work), or roll any other skill if you think you can justify it. Often, skill challenges can have a skill that's markedly easier, and/or a skill that's markedly more difficult. An example in the Dungeon Master's Guide is in a negotiation skill challenge, Intimidate automatically fails no matter what, while the unlisted History skill can be used at a much lower Difficulty Class (DC) to remind him of past allegiances.

Feel free to explore options and be creative! Sometimes a use of a specific skill might unlock another primary skill too (either itself, or a skill related to it). Other times, a skill might 'exhaust' until someone refreshes it by using a different skill. DMs can be pretty creative with these themselves. And while you can just spam the same skill over and over each round, it's encouraged that you at least try to use it differently. Remember, with your roll, you must explain how you're using it!

Skill challenges reward XP just like normal combat encounters, though failure might deny you this XP, or turn into something else altogether.

One post per player, and once all 4 of you post, I'll go to the next 'round' of the skill challenge where all 4 of you post again. I will list the # of successes and # of failures each post, so everyone will know the team's progress! Those of you who already made rolls, feel free to use that same exact die roll if you would like as your first post (don't roll again unless you want to, but that will replace your previous roll).

GO!

Aelgeirr would nod to the Lieutenant. "We'll do what we can. Good luck to you." To Dwallin, Aelgeirr remarked, "You do not like to lose do you? If I may say something? Don't let your losses rule you. Yes, let them change you and make you better, but don't let them control you. This is going to be a long night, friend. Think clearly and things will be ....better."

With that, Aelgeirr would use his strength to help carry a wounded person who was unable to walk back to shelter.
