Darren strolled into Violet City with Flynn at his shoulder, staring wide eyed in wonder at the bustling little community. And to think, not far from here was the entrance to Victory Road and the Kanto Pokemon League! "Wow...." Darren breathed, feeling more like a tourist than a trainer. Flynn tapped Darren a few times to grab his attention and pointed out the gym nearby. "Char!" Flynn seemed insistent. "Haha, I love your enthusiasm buddy, but we haven't trained much yet, and there's only the two of us. We're gonna need to get a few teammates to back us up before we can think about taking on a gym." Flynn frowned somewhat disappointedly, but Darren had a point. This wasn't some pidgey that he could rush in on and one hit KO, those gyms were the big leagues, and they needed to prepare. "Char!" Flynn hopped off of Darren's shouder and ran a bit ahead, motioning Darren to follow.

Darren was somewhat surprised when Flynn suddenly jumped off of him and seemed to insist Darren follow him somewhere before darting off. "W-wait! Flynn where are you going?! Hold up buddy!!!" Darren called after his pokemon, chasing him through the streets of the city and pushing past a few people, uttering quick apologies as he pursued his one and only pokemon. Arceus if he lost track of Flynn he would never forgive himself... "Flynn! What in the world has gotten into you?!" Flynn finally broke away from the city, Darren in hot pursuit, before finally skidding to a halt, looking over a few fields of grass and cobblestone paths. "Char! Charmander!" Flynn glanced to Darren, hoping he would understand.

Darren had to take a moment to catch his breath before trying to work out what was going on with Flynn, or at least why the Charmander had brought him here. "What is it Flynn? Are you really that eager to start training for the gyms? Or looking for teammates? Or both?" Darren scratched his head and straightened out. "Char!" Flynn nodded. Eager one, this pokemon. Darren felt practically out of shape compared to Flynn. "Phew... Alright alright, haha, lets get going then!" Flynn grinned wildly and dove head first into the tall grass, unable to find an opponent to battle, but he did find a little heart shaped scale. Looking at it curiously, Flynn plucked it off the ground, but it crumbled away almost immediately. The Charmander frowned somewhat. Too bad, it was a pretty little scale... Still, Flynn felt something strange come over him, a new power, which of course only more eager to find an opponent somewhere in the tall grass.

Flynn continued rooting through the grass without much luck, Darren close behind and watching his Charmander carefully in case Flynn decided to take off running again. He wasn't letting this pokemon out of his sight again! Thankfully Flynn finally seemed to find something, happening upon a Caterpie that was spinning a sticky string of some kind, and Ashen, ever so eager to battle, leapt out of the grass and badly startled the pokemon, causing it to spreay it's sticky string everywhere and all over Ashen, who growled and whipped his tail at it in retaliation, another instant K.O., but this time Darren wasn't too happy about it. "Flynn! I know you're eager to battle, but that's no reason tio brutalize wild pokemon like that! Couldn't you see it was frightened and defenseless?!" Darren scolded the Charmander with a sigh and quickly capturing the Caterpie.

"Char..." Flynn looked a bit sheepish. Perhaps he had been a bit rough and eager to battle. The Caterpie had been busy doing something after all before he'd jumped out at it. Darren let out his newly captured pokemon, who was still quite dazed and weak from the battle, but still cowered before them both anxiously. "C-c-caterpie...!" Darren gave Flynn another scolding look before carefully approaching the small bug pokemon. "I'm so sorry about that, Flynn just got a little rowdy that's all. He won't hurt you anymore, and neither will I. I promise." Darren smiled warmly at the little bug, carefully reaching out a hand towards it, and though she flinched at the sight of his hand coming towards her and began to tremble, Darren's gentle touch made her reconsider his kind words, and she looked up at him with her big shiny black eyes adoringly. "You see? I'm not so bad, right?" The Caterpie chirped happily, clearly relieved that Darren and Flynn weren't here to eat her, or anything of that sort. Finally relaxed, the little bug glowed faintly, quickly evolving into it's next stage of life, which was what she'd been trying to do previously before Flynn so rudely interrupted. She was strong enough now to build her cocoon, and now that she was comfortable in her environment she finally let herself evolve. "Wow! Look at you evolving already~" Darren crooned, happily petting the new Metapod's shell. "A real pokemon metamorphosis, and I got to witness it first hand! That's awesome! You know what, that's what I'm gonna call you. Morpho! What do you think?" Darren asked with a smile to his new Metapod. "M-Metapod...!" Morpho replied cheerily, and Darren chuckled. "I think I'll take that as a yes haha~"

Morpho may have evolved, but she was still very weak from Flynn's attack. "Come on Morpho, let's get you all healed up huh? Are you hungry? Maybe we can grab a bite to eat too." Darren suggested, scooping up Morpho and letting Flynn climb up onto his shoulder before heading off to the pokemon center. Morpho seemed content in Darren's arms, though she could feel Flynn's eyes on her, which made her somewhat uncomfortable. "Char..." Flynn murmured her direction, what seemed to be a quiet apology. "M-meta..." Morpho dismissed it, there was nothing to forgive. Pokemon battled all the time and she was just weak and scared, most Caterpie didn't get to evolve because they became a pidgey's lunch, honestly she was surprised she had made it this far. She still felt Flynn's intense stare at the back of her shell, and instinctively recoiled, burrowing deeper into Darren's arms.

Walking into the pokemon center, Darren gave Nurse Joy a warm smile, one returned in kind by the nurse. "Hello! How may I help you today?" She asked brightly. "If you could, I'd like you to take a look at my pokemon and heal them up to full health." Darren asked, setting Morpho on the counter first and then Flynn, handing Joy their pokeballs. "Not a problem!~ I'll have them all healed up in a jiffy." She smiled, returning Flynn and Morpho to their pokeballs before bringing them to a machine in back, and after a moment or two, they were back. "Okay! Your pokemon are fighting fit!~ We hope to see you again soon." She gave a light bow, and Darren nodded to the nurse. "Thank you miss Joy~" He smiled, picking up Morpho once again and letting Flynn perch on his shoulder so they could all head to the cafeteria.

The cafeteria smelled wonderful, but Darren wasn't actually all that hungry himself, so he nibbled on some rolls and mainly focused on getting some pokefood for Morpho and Flynn, letting them eat their fill. They deserved it after all, Flynn for all his hard work training, and Morpho as an apology for their awful first impression. "I'm telling you guys, this is gonna be great. Morpho, I just know you'll make an excellent addition to our team." Flynn seemed to perk up at this news, stopping mid bite to look up at Darren with inquiring eyes. Were they ready now? Darren chuckled and shook his head no, much to the Charmander's disappointment. He let out an audible huff, a ring of smoke puffing out as an expression of Flynn's displeasure, but Darren was only amused by it. "The time will come, but that time is not now. We have a lot more training to do here, many more pokemon to meet! We can't just push on now Flynn!" The charmander wanted to disagree, but once again couldn't which was mildly irritating but something Flynn could put up with, since Darren was right.

As soon as Morpho and Flynn had finished up their meals, Darren placed the used food bowls in the pile of dirty dishes and scooped up Morpho into his arms, since she couldn't walk alongside him. "Come on guys~ Let's keep looking for some new pokemon." Flynn clamored up onto Darren's shoulder with an enthusiastic "Char!" as they moved back out of the pokemon center. "Er... Hey Flynn, where was that grassy area again...?" The charmander pointed him out in the right direction and Darren nodded appreciatively, walking over towards the area Flynn had pointed out.

Making his way back to the tall grassy area just west of the city, Darren let Flynn root around in the grass for wild pokemon once again. Morpho wasn't quite battle ready yet, judging by her actions and reactions to the battle with Flynn, plus her shell was still soft and vulnerable since she had only recently evolved, so it was up to Flynn to look for other pokemon. Luckily they didn't have to look for long as Flynn ran into a new pokemon to add to Darren's pokedex pages, though there was still no sign of the Pidgey he'd seen earlier... "Alright Flynn, now hit it.... Gently, please." Flynn gave a small snort and thwacked the Nidoran with his tail, another instant KO. Flynn was feeling pretty good about all these instantaneous knockouts, feeling more than prepared for the gym, and Darren supposed he couldn't really complain. One pokeball, and the Nidoran was caught.

Darren smiled as he retrieved the Nidoran's pokeball. "Alright! Another pokemon captured and recorded! We're making pretty good progress eh Flynn?" Flynn grinned at Darren and waved his tail back and forth. "Char!" Morpho seemed rather confused, not exactly sure what they were talking about, but she was content to be under Darren's protection now. "That's five entries now in one day! At this rate, we'll--" Darren's celebratory babble was momentarily interrupted as he felt his communicator buzz. Glancing down, he saw that the name Maria DiCaprio flashed on screen, and Darren repressed a grimace. It was his mother, or rather, adopted mother.

Debating his gains and losses, Darren decided he couldn't avoid it anymore and reluctantly answered the call with a sheepish smile at the screen. "H-hey Mom..." The woman on the screen had far too much make up on and long wavy and curly brown hair tied up on top of her head in a fancy looking ponytail. "Darren! Angel, how are you?!" She gasped, her voice exaggerating practically every word she spoke. Darren gave a light shrug. "Oh well you know me... Just fine mom thanks." He scratched the bridge of his nose and avoided looking at the screen. "Come now Darren dear, no need to be so embarrassed! Did you get your pokemon already? Don't tell me that you haven't I won't hear of that nonsense. If they're taking too much time giving you a pokemon then you take it yourself, and a few more while you're at it, am I being clear?" Darren gave a light chuckle and nodded. "Yeah, but don't worry mom, I got my pokemon a while ago, a Charmander to be more specific." Maria frowned somewhat. "Just one?! Darren, honey, you're a DiCaprio now, you should be demanding to have all three! And if they don't give them to you, you just steal them. It'd be as easy as taking.... Well, pokemon from an old man~" She gave a really horrid laugh and took a sip of a glass of something. Knowing her it was probably red wine. Darren looked hesitant and uncomfortable, Oak was his idol, he couldn't just... Steal from him, even if it was so easy Darren himself could probably pull it off. "It's okay mom, I was planning to go back, but... Later in the night, you know, where there's no one around and I can just break in." It was a lie, but one convincing enough to win his foster mom over. "I think you should. That's an excellent plan dear, and now that you've been inside you know the layout of the room and where they keep the pokemon! Brilliant Darren, I knew we raised you right. Cheers to you~" She doffed her glass to the screen and took another sip.

After taking her sip, Maria turned her attention back to Darren with an apologetic look. "Shoot... I'd love to stay and chat, but I have to go now, sorry dear. You know me, busy busy~ Kisses!" She blew Darren a kiss through the screen before it darkened, and Darren sighed. He did owe a lot to the DiCaprio's for taking him in and raising him like their own child, and in all of their exuberant splendor, but they expected him to become this prodigal pokemon thief and executive for Team Void when there wasn't a mean bone in his body. Flynn looked up at his trainer quizzically, not sure what to think of the sight he'd just witnessed, and a little apprehensive at the idea of Darren trying to break in to Oak's lab later. "Don't worry... None of that stuff is true, I just gotta tell mom what she wants to hear and she'll be happy, then forget about it by tomorrow. I promise." He insisted, and then sighed. "If I catch and train a lot of pokemon, I could probably claim I stole them all, and they'd be happy with it..." He scratched his head again, musing to himself more than anything else. Flynn believed Darren, giving a slow nod. He wasn't entirely sure what all was going on, but Darren was a good kid, that was easy to tell, so Flynn trusted him and scampered off into the grass again, finding another one of those delicate heart shaped scales. He tried once again to carefully pick it up, but to no avail, for it crumbled away again at his touch, bestowing a new power but leaving him empty handed otherwise.

Flynn heard a shuffle of grass and his gaze shot up, spying a Spearow in the grass. He set himself, tensed, and then THWACK! Another pokemon bit the dust. Darren snapped out of his more depressing thoughts as Flynn called out to him, and he jogged over, digging out another pokeball and tossing it at the fainted Spearow. "Is it just me, or does this seem almost too easy?" Darren wondered aloud as he retrieved the pokeball and placed it in his satchel. However it seemed Darren's statement jinxed their luck, because after that they couldn't find any more pokemon anywhere. It was as if they had all fled... "Well.... Huh..." Darren sighed, glancing down to a disappointed Flynn. "...Why don't we try the forest nearby? It's bound to be teeming with pokemon!" He offered, which perked Flynn up rather quickly. "Char!" He seemed to agree, running back into town with excitement. "H-hey but you gotta wait up for me!!" Darren called running after his pokemon.
