Ah and there was the big menace off of the sands, Impressed to one of the younger candidates. Cai had no need for envy. He was a fine blue, but they were somewhat glad the oaf hadn't Impressed them or Jemi. Movement from the clutch drew their eye past the sharp looking green as a new dragonet was revealed. Well that flies in the face of all of Cai's doubts. A frown twisted their lips as the bestial bronze oozed out from among the clutch. "I hate being wrong." Cai muttered quietly to Jemi.
What egg had spawned this creature...Cai was unsure but the aura it exuded made the small hairs on the back of their neck stand on edge. The large blue who had had them so concerned only moments ago looked like nothing compared to the potential threat the bronze posed.
~..........~
"Well that answers your question right quick it does!" Ja'line exclaimed, pointing and whistling down at the sands below them. Ja'line could only imagine the amount of marks that had just exchanged hands and regretted not betting a couple of her own on the possibility of a bronze.
~...........~
A bronze. Aioth's welcoming hum increased in volume as her eyes picked up speed, interest sparking a mild excitement in the green.
I can see that. Dianno leaned forward in his seat anyways. So a blue could sire a bronze? Does that mean that one could also potentially sire a gold? Maybe the clutch father had less to do with the color distribution of a clutch than had previously been thought, even in his own time! (Or especially in his own time). Well this will shake things up. Do they have any reasons left as to why greens and blue are the bottom of the pecking order?
Only numbers. Which is a terrible reason from any angle. The small green bobbed her head with enthusiasm.

Well, guess there was no reason to be too worried.
Qyprenna's anxieties seemed to dissipate a little at the sight of the bronze that hatched from the Santa egg. He truly was a sight to behold, though the young woman wasn't sure what to make of him. He was handsome, to be sure, and she watched intently as he advanced upon the ranks of the candidates. Yet, at the same time, she wasn't going to get too attached to him. He would Impress to one of the other candidates, she reckoned. She would be happy for them, just as she was with Aderyn and Poecai.
The candidate's anxieties seemed to shift as she thought about all of this. Not about the color of the dragons any longer, but if she, herself, would end up Impressing at all. A sigh escaped her as she thought of this, and Qyp found herself running a hand over her shaved head. Guess she'd have to wait and see.
--
"Ohhhh, would you look at that."
This came from Til'lene up in the stands, as the sight of the bronze caught her eye.
"He's a handsome one."
Chuckling, she relayed the both the image and the news to Pelgalath. The brown dragon harumphed at what he was told, and his rider could feel a curt response coming her way. No doubt that Pelgalath had intended to speak his mind freely, wanting to give Til a piece of his mind. He always did. Then again, she was used to that by now, and was eager to see what he had to say.
'Blues, greens, and even a bronze,' he muttered, clearly a bit grumpy, 'while it's good there is a bronze, I still long to see a brown amongst the ranks of eggs. Personal pride, and all that.' If she had been with her dragon at that point, she would have stroked under his chin or on his leg reassuringly. There would probably be a brown somewhere, she knew, as there were quite a few eggs left to hatch. Pelgalath just felt a special kindred to his own color, as most dragons did.
'Give it time, Pel,' she told him, turning her attention back to the candidates and the hatchlings. 'I'm sure there will be.'

"Yeah," Re'ka agreed with a grin, producing a couple of apples from one of her belt pouches and proffering one to M'ere. "I like her," she added.
Another Impression was made, the huge blue, and then there was really something for the crowd to converse in urgent whispers about. "Shards," Re'ka bit into her apple, "Should've put marks on that after all," she said around the mouthful. Oh well at least she hadn't bet against there being bronzes, no harm done. Taking her eyes off the dragons for a few moment Re'ka craned to look over at the High Stand, wondering what her wingmate's response to the appearance of a shiny dragon would be.

Oh thank shells for that. Even if it was only this one, even if all the rest were green and blue, at least there was one bronze to placate the masses. C'tis relaxed a little and nodded to Cedeny. "Well that answers that question then." And had just won him a number of marks as well, of course he'd bet on there being a bronze in the mix. One bronze would be about normal for a clutch this size and maybe four or five browns? There were no browns at all so far but there was time still and if a bronze was possible then surely a brown was too right?

At that point Debonair spotted the No Such bronze, turned, and loped towards him. The larger hatchling paused mid stride as she trotted around him, apparently studying the sheen of his brighter markings. After a couple of circuits the green came to a halt in front of her sibling, gave him a very hard look for a few moments and then turned away to head towards the candidates again. It seemed that she had decided she couldn't remove his shiny from him as easily as she had obtained the silver still clasped in her jaws.
It also seemed that she had finished treasure hunting for now, for she finally swaggered over to the candidates. She started at one end of the ranks and started to weave her way neatly through the throng so that she could look up at each and every one of them and, more to the point perhaps, display her treasure to them.
As Debonair departed No Such remained standing where he was, watching her go with eyes swirling calm blue. For the moment he didn't seem to inclined to continue towards the candidates himself, perhaps he was waiting to see what else the little thief would get up to?
In the meantime more eggs were cracking open, a good two thirds were hatched now and - at long last - a stocky brown form appeared out of a nondescript egg towards the middle of the clutch.

"And there is! Take that bronze riders." B'ren nearly came off his seat, radiating glee and cheerfully hugged both Ja'line and R'soua. "This is brilliant! It changes everything and that is awesome!"
Hazmath questioned and grinned as his rider suddenly cough and returned to his seat. He questioned, peering down at the hatching and grinned widely.
B'ren paused and groan, sinking. "Why didn't I place bets on this clutch?"
-------------------------------------------------
Nash paused, taking in the bronze and the increase of gossip and noise in the stand and frowned. "Shouldn't it be expected that there would be a bronze? 32 eggs, a queen mother, both healthy?" He questioned, tone a tad confused.
Really, he didn't get why they were all fussing.

Bereck let out an impatient breath and waved his free hand, the one that wasn't keeping a light grip on the edge of the table just in case any more hatchlings came bounding over and he wanted to move in a hurry. "People," he said eloquently, "they'd rather hang onto their own little prejudices and assumptions than accept what makes most sense." There had of course been every chance that it was impossible for a blue to sire a bronze, for whatever reason, but he didn't understand the level of surprise that it was possible.
Then again maybe people were just excited. "There were no bronzes in the last clutch," the healer recalled after a moment with a deep frown, "I suppose it could just be excitement, relief. The wings need their big bronzes after all, though I'm sure a lot of the people up there hold far less practical sentiments than that."

Sarai grinned, eyes bright and first made a bee-line for Ra’fe, rounded him up and then dragged him along to Vosin/Vesin and was that her little sib? Red heads, all around. She flopped down near, sprawled out in the seat and winked at whoever twin it was. “Decided you look lonely, so I rounded up friendly company,” she proclaimed and shoved an elbow into Ra’fe’s gut before giving a sigh. “So bronze it is. Good all around.” Ra’fe nodded at Vosin and settled down again, amused even if he didn't show it but relaxed. His hair had been cut short, jaw length and he wore his wing with pride. “Have you been well?” He asked quietly, looking back towards the sands. Bronze, brown, things were getting shaken up and Ra’fe was rather okay with that. As long as it didn't end up in a fight. (Sarai, she will not be contained)

“True.” People were not at all prone to making any amount of sense most times. Nash hummed slightly, trying to think of the clutch in dragon terms instead of whers and failed. Blah. Inefficient and crazy and surrounded by spectators. He briefly touched on Nana, the hunk of green wher sprawled out in the sun somewhere content from her breakfast and the warmth.
He glanced at Harper, the green doing lazy circles above the sands, light flickering off her wings. “Could be,” he admitted. He wasn’t sure what big bronzes really did in a wing that a pair of greens couldn’t. Did time bronzes count as smaller dragons then? Because he had seen a few and they were blue to green size and smaller. “Think they should just be pleased the hatchlings are healthy.”

Jemi grinned, moving to keep Cai steady, no one needed to be tripping on the sands after all. She hummed slightly, watching the blue move off. She gave a low deep bubbly laugh in her stomach and reached out, gently flicking a finger against Cai’s head. “Can’t be right a hundred percent of the time. And relax a bit, open up.”
Certainly there was no needs to be frowning. She tipped her head, following Cai’s line of sight and gave a soft pleased sound. “Well, that is a strapping big lad isn’t he. Pretty looking.”

Cai made a face at Jemi. "I still don't like it." They straightened and ran a hand over their short fuzz, sighing and watching the Debonair green inspect her bronze brother. Was she going to start a fight with him? But no... she left him alone to his own devices.
As with the blue from before, Cai held still as the green sauntered her way through the candidates and past themself and Jemi, cane still clasped in her jaws. Cai didn't remember it happening often but it was always strange to them when a hatchling took a fascination to a material object before Impression. Cai supposed it was why they were all dressed in matching clothing with no decorations or accessories. As few distractions as possible in the already chaotic climate of a Hatching. Cai had never really enjoyed children of any species though, who knew how they thought.
~............~
"He is! Is she offering him the cane?"
Not as handsome as you. Page smiled as he shared a moment with his own bronze high above. Venaith shifted and raised his head proudly. The young bronze was a sight to behold in his dark way. Venaith was overall fair for a bronze, highly patterned in a myriad of shades running from his nose to his tailtip, but overall he gave off the impression of near-gold.
Issi began to squirm in Page's lap, her peaceful sleepiness finally giving way to the excitement of the day. She babbled in little grunts as she wriggled around Pagerell's fingers, pushing to be stroked and paid attention to or let go. "Issi hush." Page whispered, finding the spot between her wings that she loved being scratched soooo much.
~..........~
"Oooph!" Ja'line was half dragged out of her seat by B'ren's enthusiasm and it set her laughing as he turned the same to R'soua behind them.
Sanuyeth snorted and cast side eyes at Hazmath. No. Whatever question she answered was left open to interpretation.

Debonair had finally come back over the moment she saw her brother. She seemed intrigued to see him, probably hoping to get a glimpse of the shininess he possessed, much like she held in her mouth. He didn't hold her attention for very long, however, and after she was satisfied, she made her way back to the ranks. Qyprenna couldn't help but tense some, upon the green's return. Hopefully, she wasn't still mad at her over the incident that occurred before. Just where was she going?
The bronze seemed just as keen to watch as Qyprenna herself was. The young woman was watching the green so intently, that she didn't even notice that a brown had hatched from one of the other eggs in the clutch.
---
'There's a brown now!'
'About time! How is he?'
Til'lene shrugged her shoulders some. He was a stocky lad, but he didn't seem too terribly interesting. Not like the little thief, or her handsome bronze sibling. Now those two were fun to watch. The wingrider gazed at the hatchlings, curious to see if one of them would impress next, that she all but forgot the brown that had broken forth from his egg. Mentally, she could feel Pelgalath huff in response.
'Well, I guess some representation is better than none at all.'

“Hey, hey, watch it!” R’soua said, but accepted the hug with a grin - it could only be a semi-hug because of her position higher up in the stands, but she was happy for it. A bronze! Well, didn’t that just change… everything? A whole new world of possibilities seemed to be opening up before her, and she was suddenly fiercely glad that she lived now, and that she was young and strong and ready to shape this brilliant new age. “Shards, it does at that! What a time to be alive”
Kyoth kept his own counsel.
==
“Redfruit!” M’ere cheerfully accepted, biting down with a heavy crunch, before peering wide-eyed over the red sphere. “Is that actually…? Well, shaff me” There wasn’t any reason why not, but… well, it still was a surprise. She wondered what it meant, as far as this could be said to mean anything.
==
Cedeny raised her glass silently to C’tis with an arch of one eye-brow, inclining her head slightly. She didn’t like this, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t be gracious.

Fight As One was having none of Debonair. As the other green wove past, the stocky hatchling lunged, apparently attempting to clamp her jaws around what remained of the cane and wrest it from her, her eyes glittering with a mad red glow.
Predictably Debonair was none too pleased about this attempt to steal her shiny prize. As the bigger hatchling grabbed onto her prize she squeaked and tried to pull backwards, quite possibly bashing into a candidate as she scrabbled.

Vosin and TiaethShe was watching the little bronze to see which way he'd go. He seems like a calm fellow. No antics, no posturing. He didn't give a flip who had noticed him or who hadn't. Vosin gave a chuckle as a green went to inspect her brother before turning back toward the candidates. What had that been all about? Who knew what hatchlings thought. Bronze was just standing there and green among the kids. Probably the green would Impress next. While his rider was focused mainly on the bronze, Tiaeth was keeping an eye on the clutch as a whole. Look Vosin and Esre. A brown has made his appearance. That was good news for the clutch. All the babies look healthy. Tiaeth was pleased no matter what. Her attention was forcibly drawn away from the hatching by a woman with man in tow making beeline for her and her siblings. Vos realized she'd been so intent that she'd been leaning forward. Now she relaxed back and leaned against the bronze leg behind her. "Ah we did? Well thanks for volunteering to be our company." Vos grinned in sympathy at the man. "Handsome little fellow isn't he?" There did seem to be quite a bit of talking since the bronze had made his quiet appearance. Vos reached down for another meatroll then nodded to the two riders who'd joined them. "Esre brought meatrolls since the hatchlings decided we could all do without a hot breakfast. Would you care for one?" Drudge KialynkaThings were going quite calmly, the drudge noted. Only one girl had a bandage on her head that she could see. Which meant the silly wherries weren't lining themselves up in front of dragon claws. She smirked, then grabbed a full bucket off the table. Kia carried it down to the end of a table where a newly bonded green pair had stopped. She set it back on the table and pushed it over to the rider. It didn't stay calm for long. Two greens both decided they wanted the shiny prize and started a tug-o-war in the midst of the candidates. Would they move or be trampled?

Qyprenna watched the hatchling fight scene play out before her with such intensity, that she almost didn't notice that they were awfully close to her. Luckily, before any damage could be done, she fluidly stepped out of the way, and continued on with her watching. Fight As One did not seem pleased with Debonair at all, though why, the candidate had no idea. Likewise, Debonair didn't like having someone try to steal their prize possession. Seeing all of this play out before her, Qyp could only think back to her own incident with the green and the cane.
Perhaps the ordeal with the two hatchlings would go more smoothly than her own did. The last thing she needed was to get another slash to the face. She had enough of that for one day.
--
"And they are at it again," Til'lene murmured, leaning over in the stands to get a better view. If there was one thing to be said about this clutch, in particular, is that they were most certainly a lively bunch. There was no doubt about that. The greens seemed irritated at one another, with the silver bit of the cane as their focus.
Poor Bereck -- the beautiful piece of his cane would probably all scratched up by the time this was finished.
He was not going to be pleased about that.
