Jikkiri

Jikkiri moved slowly, perhaps too slowly, as he went back to the candidates, reluctant to process what he'd seen and experience, and more reluctant still to go back out there. But Jamarin was out there, on the sands, so Jikkiri was going there... because they were always together, right?

He didn't notice much as he trudged back to the candidates, not even the green that was 'assaulting' his brother's clothing...

Jamarin

Jamarin hadn't yelled at it so much as he'd gotten shaffing annoyed at it. “Augh!” he said, his pants tearing as a claw hooked it, “Go away!”

He needed to keep an eye on that brown, and on his brother, and not let the two meet. “Quit it!” he said to the green. He didn't notice, of course, the Queen egg begin to crack. He didn't personally care and, he had more pressing concerns...

Fadrin's bravado flashed through him, alternating with a chilling spike of fear, as the brief tussle with the brown was answered with lancing arcs of pain across his chest, rending his Gatherbest clothing to shreds. The pain of his chest, however, paled in comparison to the fire that was his face as the brown raked razor sharp talons across his brow and cheek. Reeling, he fell, his world consumed by disorienting pain and a dizzying blackness as his vision skewed.

He squeezed his eyes tight but it didn't stop the fire in his left eye as he pressed his hands against the bleeding gashes. A soft touch to his flesh soothed it, briefly, and tender fingers touched him... blending with a memory of a scream as he groaned and gritted his teeth. "Kyler.....?"

Then, even as he was reeling, rapturous joy chased the pain and a great, confident voice erupted in his mind as Conroith Impressed and his tears of pain became tears of triumph. The warmth of his dragon and the assurance that came with her command curled at his core and, with a mind only for her, Fadrin struggled to his feet, one hand clutched to the left side of his face.

Panting, clearly in shock from blood loss and pain, the farmer's boy squeezed the hand in his reflexively before stumbling forward to wrap his free arm around the green, who'd peeled off to meet him. The angry brown had turned his attention elsewhere and while she was wary, watching her foe with a light in her eye that dared the brown to try anything, the green crooned.

Despite the blood and ooze seeping from between his fingers, the grin upon Fadrin's face was immeasurably happy as he leaned against his dragon, adrenaline quickly fading.

We must go, Mine. You need help... Conroith crooned again, wings fluttering as the Hatching moved on and yet time seemed to stand still for her and Hers.

After a few heartbeats that felt like hours, Fadrin nodded, "Yes... but Kyler... Is h-he...?" He tried looking through the blood but his vision was odd and his left eye felt weird... to those watching, it was gruesome sight. The brown had punctured Fadrin's eye and permanently disfigured the farmer's boy.

Fadrin stumbled a few steps back toward his friend before collapsing completely. Conroith called out just as the Healers arrived, taking advantage of a lull in the action to sweep the boy away, coaxing Conroith with them.

The Gold Egg twitched again and it's shell gave way, leaving a gaping hole large enough for the pale hided hatchling to uncoil herself languidly and stretch long confined muscles for the first time. Her eyes glittered with flashes of red as she preened, licking clean what little flecks of egg had clung to her.

Once satisfied the gold's head swiveled sharply towards the candidates. The male candidates specifically. She rose to her feet and with wings neatly folded along her spine she jogged forward with lengthy strides. None of the other hatchlings seemed to draw her attention away as she passed them. Whatever her purpose was, it didn't seem to have anything to do with her siblings.

The gold hatchling snapped her teeth at no one in particular, making a satisfied noise as she reached the front line of boys, sliding between two of them and brushing the length of her body against theirs as she parted their ranks. Lucayr in particular got an almost affectionate brush of her tail along his legs as she slid past him, brushing another boy opposite of him with her wingtips

Malta and Poecileth

Malta sighed. While it was good that most of the candidates were not coming to the healers and so were either not badly hurt or not badly hurt enough, it didn't feel so good. There was a dead young man on a sheet nearby, and that was one too many.

Sure, she couldn't have saved him, but it still weighed on her. She huddled mentally up to her dragon. These things always would.

Her colleagues asked if she was all right, and she was. She washed the boy's blood from her hands and turned back to the hatching, watching the proceedings thoughtfully.

She was soon distracted, however, by the arrival of a candidate... no... a new Weyrling. “All right, lets take care of you.” she said to Fadrin, helping to get him out of the way, “Someone bring some meat for the little one.” she said to no one in particular as she examined the boy...

And then the gold hatched and Kalendol's breath hitched a little at her beauty. 'She's gorgeous.' The female thought and then the gold went to the boys and Kalendol let out an anxious sigh.

Vosin

"Hahha queens need their drama and audiences right?" She tried to tuck her hair back a little bit again. Interested, she listened to the story. Maybe it wasn't what she should be focusing on right now, but it was still fun. "Fish that big eh? We need to go see that some day." What an adventure that'd be! "I bet the nose would make a great trophy!"

Vos settled into her new spot and looked around at the boys nearby. The bloodstain was pretty obvious, so she glanced toward the healers. They didn't seem busy and that wasn't a good sign. She spotted one of the boys who'd carried the mauled candidate heading up and looking pretty out of it. Someone needed to do something for him. She glanced around for the one he had been hanging around with earlier and saw him very occupied with a green going after his clothes.

"Be right back," Vos whispered to her sibs then slipped out of the line and headed over to Jikkiri. "Hey kid, you did what you could for him. Don't think about it right now. Why don't you come over and stand with my sibs and me? We got a friend telling us fish stories." Vos held out her hand with an encouraging look. Focused on the other boy, she hadn't noticed the gold hatch.

As the gold hatched Vee dropped her weight onto one hip and watched with the relaxed curiosity of one who knows they're not even close to being in the running. She looked fit, lovely thing she was in fact, and that was good news for the wherholds. What was she doing with the boys though? Just introducing herself? Vee guessed so and then with a slight shrug she turned her dark gaze back onto the brown and the greens that held her favour at the moment. When were the girls going to stop posturing at the brown and at one another? Vee had never been a patient woman and the rush of adrenaline was doing nothing to make her more so. It didn't help that she could feel Weyrleader's eager little mind nudging at her, begging to come join her. Eventually she gave up on keeping him in the dorms and urged him to appear high up in the Stands and locate her father, she was sure he'd be here somewhere.

Vesin smiled as she listened to Zen's story and she couldn't help but laugh. "So we'll have to make sure not to take you where those kinds of fish are huh Es?" She joked along with the other girl. She was glad that Vos had noticed the one boy who had tried to take care of the one that was injured badly by the brown. Ves had been so preoccupied with the dragons she hadn't even noticed how off the poor candidate looked. That's why she was glad that her twin had noticed. Two halves of the same person she had always believed. Then, with a quick intake of air, she watched the gold hatch. How magnificent. She remembered back to the touching, how kind the gold had been. She was definitely as magnificent as she had thought she would be, even more so as the gold came to the boys side to say hello. Or was it to say hello? Ves couldn't help but get her hopes up but she tried to dismiss them. Would a gold really choose her? She was more likely to get a blue or green, but still, she watched the gold as she went right through all the other dragonets and was giving the boys affectionate brushes with her wings and tail.

Vesresh

I love you. he thought affectionately at his sisters. They really were the best. Sometimes they fought, but he always knew that they loved him and that he could always count on them.

Zen, though... He was distracted again by her fish tales, wondering how a fish that big could exist. All he'd ever seen were the fish in the river, their sides shining in the sun...

He let out a surprised breath, breifly frightened by Vosin's leaving. He moved closer to Vesin, waiting for his sister to come back from... whatever she was doing.

Speaking of shining... The sight of the gold hatchling took his breath away... “oh... she's pretty...” he exclaimed, awed. And... she was coming right for them. “Vesin...” he hissed, his eyes widening as he saw a flash of pale gold hide. What was she doing here...? They didn't go for boys, did they?

Jikkiri

Jikki looked up, his dull eyes sad like a puppies. “I didn't do anything, really...” he said, his voice dripping with misery, “I didn't do anything at all.”

But fish stories sounded nice, and – aside from Jamarin, he had no where else to go so, feeling listless, Jikkiri joined Vosin. “Fish?” he said, “I've...” he sniffled, “Never heard a story about a fish...”

A glimpse of golden hide. Hello. he thought, watching the hatchling wander around the men, You're pretty.

Jikkiri might have done well to pay more attention to the Sands. Keep Out had focused predatory eyes on the boy's back the entire time he helped another off the sands. Now, as he returned. Keep Out surged to his feet and charged for a third time, directly at the young man and the woman approaching him. He hissed, claws raking the sands as he pushed his young body.

This time though was different. The snarling was there, the growling, the bared fangs, but the eyes... they whirled in a vibrant display of color. Keep Out skidded, tossing sand high into the air, and roared at Vosin even as he curled around Jikkiri. He turned that rainbow gaze upwards at the boy.

With concern for Keep Out now gone from their minds, Charging and Shrieking began circling each other in earnest. Apparently things weren't quite settled between the two and while a temporary truce had appeared to sooth their spirits, it obviously was very temporary. Shrieking screamed her displeasure again and the fight was on!

Maldryk had no complaints about all the hatchlings' attention being on the boys, even the negative attention. He would far rather see the boys get torn through than the girls, no contest at all. Every dragonet that came their direction was looked to with cautious hope, even the greens. He was leery of being bonded to a female dragon, a thought he would admit only to himself; he couldn't imagine what it would be like to share minds with a female. But if his dragon - if he had a dragon at all - was a girl, then so be it.

But why in Faranth's name was the gold coming over here? Had a girl or two gotten mixed in with the boys?

Kalendol heard the brown before she saw him, but as the dragonet raced towards Jamarin's brother and boldly hissed at Vosin she grinned. 'Looks like Jikkiri has found his partner.' She grinned even broader. Happy moments~! Now... if one decided to take her, she didn't care what one it was. So long as someone wanted her.

As the healers surrounded Fadrin and took him away, at least Kylerr was satisfied that his friend's injuries weren't in vain. Fadrin and his dragon - he smiled proudly - would be fine, he was sure. Bad, but... the wounds

He turned to survey the scene as it was now. There were dragonets everywhere, it seemed, still so many eggs to hatch yet, too, and with Fadrin accounted for, he had a new target for protection and comraderie... he looked for Vosin's telltale locks. He peered across the sands at the girls' lines, but didn't see them. Had she already impressed? Had she fallen too? He could work his way around the commotion, but that could mean drawing a careless hatchling through it. Or he could stick to the plan and hang near the edge. Fat lot of good that had done him so far...

He noted the gold egg gone and wondered if she'd Impressed yet. He smiled a little at the loyal blue. They were partners in observing right now.

And that's when Kylerr noted the stinging on his left arm. He looked down. Apparently Fadrin hadn't completely shielded him from the brown... his shirt stained black from the relatively minor wound there. Still... this would require some care later, but not right now. He opened and closed his hand with little pain, but raising it was not so comfortable. He let it dangle a bit. He was in no imminent danger, but if he stayed here, he'd be toast if another dragonet decided he looked tasty.

He decided to follow the back edge of candidates, keeping an eye out for Vosin.

Vosin

She didn't like seeing him like this in the middle of a hatching and was glad he agreed to come with her. Vos was about to put her arm over his shoulder and bring him to her group when a scream sounded nearby and a dark blur wrapped around the boy. She froze as the aggressive brown claimed the boy for his own. Vosin gave a broad grin as she kept a respectful distance from the brown. "Congrats! You better take him off the Sands before he tries to eat me. What's his name?"

The teen waited until the new pair was safely off then returned to Esre's side with a shaky laugh. "Well then! What'd I miss?" She looked around and noticed the pair of greens were once again brawling. What was up with them?

There was no distraction great enough to take Lucayr's attention from the Gold egg when its shell ruptured. The little queen, huge by comparison to her clutchmates, was compelling. She was like... like a feline, the way she moved among the Candidates. He swallowed involuntarily as her tail all but stroked his legs. Was her unconventional affection toward him some kind of indication that he might Impress a bronze? He had to admit, it would be useful to have such influence--

--No, that was the old way. This was a Wherhold. Being a bronzerider here would draw far too much attention to himself. Lucayr sighed.

He turned with a start at the commotion caused by the Keep Out brown hatchling. Thankfully, the creature's eyes were awash in color. He had Impressed, finally.
