She closed her eyes and pretended it was rainfall pouring down on her, her cheeks starting to hurt from how much she was smiling. It had been a long time since she had this much reason to. But she didn't find it at all hard to describe because it was perfect as it was, this nebulous and rapidly expanding feeling in her heart that chased away demons, maybe like a polka dot balloon and maybe like a burst of light and heat and maybe like a song without words and maybe like something completely different or all the same or nothing at all, describable only by its own indescribableness, which was now a word as far as she was concerned because anything could happen, anything at all, like finding love in the midst of deep despair and little nobodies finding more meaning in little kisses than in her longest rants.
She forgot her words and kissed him fiercely instead, arms anchored to his neck in case they started to float. Just to be extra sure, she hopped up and wrapped her legs around him next.

He stared at her suspiciously.
"Erm...can I get a hint?

"Yes, show him the light," said Gale, as he flipped open the book, leafing through the first few pages, past the publication information, the title page, the acknowledgements and dedication, the table of contents, until he finally reached the first chapter.
"And if he threw your books out, I'd have something to say to him about that."

making amends
His eyes followed her movements, a conflicted expression on Gale's face as he said slowly, "I was...relieved too," he admitted, his face coloring in shame. "I'm trying not to be, honestly, but I just..."
He trailed off, a little frustrated, and said, "Like you said, he never made things easy. He always had to have the upper hand in everything, not to...not to speak ill of the dead or anything - " What a strange concept, Jack was dead. " - and I have to at least give him credit for that damn determination, but..."
Gale exhaled a short breath, looking down at his hands, which were now both resting on Stormy's lower legs, lightly across her ankles. "I guess I just don't know how to feel yet."

tea time
He couldn't remember the last time he'd seen her smile like that.
In the beginning, there had been a lot of them. Some were shy and hesitant as they'd first started to explore their newfound relationship, awkward and uncertain; some were cautious and tentative, but curious. Some where happy and amused. Some were bittersweet and sad, usually after a failed mission or the loss of someone they knew, or after a particularly. Some were bright and cheerful. And some of them were quiet, gentle, reserved only for him, for when it was just the two of them, and it was those smiles that Gale loved the most.
Here, however, here and now, the brilliant, beautiful, radiant smile that had crossed Stormy's face, was a close second to all those that he had seen, dominating the memories he had of them.
Gale's arms moved automatically to accommodate her as she leapt up, Stormy wrapping herself around him, and Gale held her tightly, his own arms around her waist to keep her steady (she was light, she was still so thin, but she was warm and wonderful and beautiful). Little words were mumbled against her lips, little nonsensical declarations of adoration and affection and love, but most what he wanted to say was nonverbal and didn't actually need saying aloud.

Laughing, Stormy got to her feet with a little wobble (low blood pressure; once again she had forgotten to eat breakfast), motioning for Gale to wait. She scuttled away and returned within a minute, holding out a small, palm-sized box for him to see.
"That's your hint~"

"He wouldn't," she said confidently. "He knows what happens if I have to punish him."
Beat.
"Glitter and posters," Stormy whispered ominously.
Trusting she wouldn't get sick again, she rolled onto her stomach and scooted towards her pillow, ready to get her bedtime story.

making amends
Stormy sighed. "It's all wrong. You don't celebrate someone dying," she murmured. "You just don't, no matter how they were in life. But...Jack was a d**k. I won't say he deserved it, but I believe he had a lot of chances to turn over a new leaf, and I believe in karma."
There, she said it. After months of trying to either ignore him or make amends when he forced his presence, she allowed herself the one insult. Her frown deepened as she looked skyward, her lips pressed together in thought. Even when all she had now were memories without the pressure of his existence, she still felt angry little pricks under her skin just thinking about it.
Or maybe those were the bugs.
"I knew him for a while before we started dating," Stormy said after a while with a distant look. "Not as a friend or anything; more like a friend of a friend. He was just a name I remember from school 'cause he was on our basketball team for middle school and high school, and sports meant a lot. That guy: Jack Hawthorn, center position, straight A student, had a sense of humor but also this scary intensity kids didn't know what to make of. He had friends I know, but I'm not sure if any of them really knew stuff about him."

He watched Stormy wobble off with a somewhat concerned expression on his face (she seemed very unsteady on her feet), but when she returned, the concern turned to relief.
At least until she held out the box. Gale blinked at it.
"Erm."

Gale could not stop the snort of laughter that escaped him. He hastily rearranged his face and tried to adapt some sort of serious expression instead, but once Stormy had rolled over, her face in her pillow, he relaxed, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"Okay," he said, and lifted one hand, smoothing it over her back gently while the other held the book.
"Harry Potter was a highly unusual boy in many ways. For one thing, he hated the summer holidays more than any other time of year. For another, he really wanted to do his homework but was forced to do it in secret, in the dead of night. And he also happened to be a wizard."

"I know," he said softly, because it was true, because no matter how much he had hated Jack Hawthorn, feeling relieved at his death made Gale feel like less of a person, rather than more of one. Stormy was staring up at the ceiling and Gale was staring at his hands.
Karma was a b***h. Wasn't that the saying?
Gale turned his head, just a little, to look at Stormy as she spoke, and absently his fingers tapped against the side of her leg, his expression growing more contemplative, more conflicted; but then it smoothed out, and he took a small breath, easing air into his lungs once more.
"How did you two start dating, then?" he asked, for once not asking out of a deep-rooted envy that Jack had known her before he had.

She giggled, evidently pleased with herself, and approached. "Still can't read my mind?" Stormy teased as she opened the box. Inside was a simple thin, silver chain with a lightning bolt charm. Gingerly she took it out and leaned forward to secure it around Gale's neck.
Dragging this out was way too much fun.

He peered curiously into the box, and his heart skipped a beat as Stormy lifted the necklace out, fastening it carefully around his neck. Gale reached a hand up and lifted the charm, running his fingers over the bolt, his face flushed a little.
"...because together wind and storms make lightning?"

"No, but also yes! Good one! You were a little closer the first time, though."
(He didn't have a hope to figure it out. She loved playing those sorts of games.)
Taking his head into her hands, Stormy performed her benediction again, one-two-three kisses, her smile turning from teasing to gentle. "I was thinking about the charm bracelet you gave me and figured I should return the favor somehow, so I found this on leave. You were Gale before, and now you're Galestorm." She lightly tapped the charm. "Because now you do have a piece of me wherever you go. Or at least the piece of me that's the Lightning to your Thunder."
She paused, tilted her head, and then chuckled as something occurred to her. "You could also say it's from Harry Potter, too, if you want."
