Sometimes it was important to take a step back, gauge the situation, and then strike. Which was exactly what Soren was pretending to do, not wanting to admit he had gotten distracted thinking about the apple tart he had eaten just that morning.

Was it just a lie?

There was really no simple attack to take out all of the strings restricting his movement. Soren raised his khopesh, lashing out and severing the strings attached to his other arm, and then rolled his shoulders and cracked his neck. It looked like there were only a couple more to go, and that was easily under control. He could do this, and then he would see about putting Alice to sleep.

Permanently.

They gave way under his heavy grip, and he flexed, free of many of the irritating strings. His expression was still grave, and he lifted up some of the remaining strings with his free hand, slicing at them with the runic razor wire of his gauntlet's cable.

Show 'em who controls our fate, Coyote cheered Harland on.

It looked like when they were in a dangerous state, Coyote had Harland's back without a doubt. Maybe Coyote was only a jerk when the stakes were low, after all.

What, you think I want to be a puppet? Coyote replied, sneering.

He raised his weapon, about to destroy the remaining two threads, when another thought occurred to him.

What about when he got smashed on that keg of apple cider? Drowning his sorrows in the delicious beverage.

Was he even drunk?

How far back did their dream-state extend? Harland hadn't noticed anything particularly good, or bad, recently; had it been part of his life far before he knew it?

Harland shuddered at the thought, and went back to ripping at the strings with his gauntlet-clad fingers.

Almost there, Coyote had returned to cheering him on, an edge of worry in his voice.

Harland had started to slow, considerably. Coyote had noticed. The strings were almost entirely severed, but Coyote's voice returned, louder than it had been before.

RIP FREE, COYBOY, his weapon yelled, trying to snap him out of whatever daze he was caught in. Harland barely heard, and it seemed more a mechanical motion that freed him from the strings altogether.

The second he did, he thought perhaps he would return to normal, but he returned to a vision.

Harland was walking down the hall, towards his room. When he opened the door, key clicking in the lock and sliding open, he let himself in in the dark and then let himself collapse backwards onto his bed. As he plunged, it was a velvet sea of covers suddenly, and pillowy down. He felt like it was engulfing him, and a pale hand reached into the deep to pull him out. "I told you that if you jump on the bed, it'll suck you in," someone whispered.

The same someone who had a haunted look to their face, and messy hair. "Tá grá agam duit, even if you're slow sometimes," the young man added, smiling. When he smiled, his whole face lit up, and he didn't look so sad or tired any more. Harland took a gentle seat back on the edge of the bed, testing it to see if it would give way. It didn't. Very firm. Puzzled, but reassured it wasn't about to suck him in again, he leaned forward and grabbed hold of Auberon, pulling him towards his lap and sitting him down. He wrapped his tanned arms around the young man, squeezing so tightly Auberon could hardly protest.

"I had a bad dream, that you had died," Harland whispered, his gunmetal green eyes welling up with tears as he leaned against Auberon's back. Auberon tried to look back at him, surely to reassure him.

All that he said was: "Tá me ar strae," over and over. In loop. There was only a fraction's pause between each repetition, and Auberon's skin became little cubes of coloured glass, cascading out where Harland tried to hold him, until his floor was covered in what looked like little crystals in rainbow array. Harland looked at his empty hands, and at the floor, and had no words come to him.

And the dried apple bits? Were those a lie too? All of his snacking...was it in vain?

He was flat out ignoring that he didn't require physical food to live. This was important. This was his life Alice was messing with.

Of course he probably would have accomplished more if he had concentrated on cutting the strings instead of being offended by the missed treats.

He was going to have to get an entire box of sugar cubes to go with his next bushel of apples.

Quillan gave a startled "jump" as he came back to his senses, which seemed to free him from yet another string.

Maybe it was the exhaustion from struggling or the strangeness of the dream, but Quillan just couldn't stop getting distracted.

With one last pull, the strings came apart and was finally free. A vision flashed before his eyes.

He was writing at his desk. Suddenly, the letters on his page shifted to form "Are you dreaming?" in large letters. He rubbed his eyes, wondering if he was indeed dreaming, but he was sure he hadn't fallen asleep. He shook his head, as if he were responding to the question. Could it be that another ink demon was playing tricks on him? Then suddenly, the letters flew off the page and two rings in the form of handcuffs were formed from the ink and he was shackled to the desk as something from behind pushed his face closer and closer to the page. Sharp spikes made of ink rose from the paper, and he felt them pierce his neck and head ....

He woke with a shudder and a gasp.

His eyes remained closed, his world as dark as it had been what felt like just moments before. In reality he was afraid to open his eyes, he felt just as bound here as he had when that needle pricked his neck.

When even his mind went dark.

What had happened before? He was speaking nonsense, his mouth moving on its own as he muttered things about killing people. Killing...for them? Someone was trying to gather information from him, information he did not have.

Then the darkness, and somehow he was now here.

Opening his eyes wide he looked first towards his hand, noticing there was not a hole in his finger, though oddly enough there was a string attached to it? Moving his hands were difficult, but with a strong enough tug he released himself from that single string. Around that same time, he realized he was covered in them. What?

He was still covered in them, but at least he was not in a chair anymore, and somehow his hand seems to have healed.

He continued to flail as hard as possible, somehow twisting himself up even more so until he fell like a yoyo back to the ground. Most of the strings snapped.

With a final frustrated kick the strings let go.

Only suddenly, and abruptly... something appeared before him.

"Wha-What.?" He stared at the thing, which looked...like another body.

Only this body had its head, but it still had that glassed-over-eyes look to it.

His first instinct was fear, backing up against a wall and staring down at a SECOND body.

He had to get out of here, had to make sure no one saw again.
