Uselessness? Hannibal? Ha ha. Yeah, I call some BS on that. I grant you that his character isn't very memorable in FE11, or especially in FE12, both him and Norne are thrown into a pretty random moment of the game. Already you'd have plenty of mounts to use, but really you can't really blame him for this. FE11 has a share of its own problems. Like why is it that you have to kill off your own units to obtain gaiden chapters? It's exactly the opposite of what you should be trying to do. Still, it DOES NOT mean that he's not beneficial in anyway possible.
So alright let's discuss Frey. He's certainly an interesting addition to the Akaneia canon. This may have come to everyone as a shock, but I actually chose Cain as the sacrifice.. sweatdrop It was my first time playing and I never knew that he was part of the Red/Green cavalier duo. This was before I knew about the different archetypes even. I had three knights and I figured I might as well let one go. Also, it's not even like you have to let Frey die. Gordin is another candidate to sacrifice too.
So yeah, I kept Frey with the group and you know what he's still a pretty good unit. I have used him, since I played the game on normal mode for my first playthrough of FE11. Being an early game unit gives him a good advantage and plenty of time to actually use him. Okay, so what, he's not available in the harder modes. I have not played beyond H-1, but I don't see the problem. It certainly doesn't make him useless at all. There's a ton of ways to utilize him because ya know he's a mount! I mean look at the average stats of all three starting cavaliers.
Abel
HP: 48.7 Strength: 23 Magic 1 Skill 28 Speed: 25 Luck 11.5 Defense 15.6 Resistance:6
Cain
HP 52.5 Strength 22.3 Magic 1 Skill 27 Speed 25 Luck: 18.2 Defense: 15.6 Resistance: 6
Frey
Hp: 52.4 Strength:22.3 Magic:1 Skill:28 Speed:25 Luck:19.1 Defense:15.6 Resistance:6
Cain is certain to cap speed, Abel and Frey are very much similar in terms of capping skill and speed. All of them have areas where they're better in and there's other places where they lack in comparison.
As a character, there's no really much to him really... All I can say is that he's a member of the altean knight that serves Marth. Not much else to say besides that.... I wouldn't go as far as to say he's extremely forgettable. I do kind of like his mug and he seems like a cool man. It would be pretty cool to see some more conversation dialogue in between FE11, but I digress.I don't really know how different he may be in FE12 as I have never used him in that game myself. Like I mentioned before, I generally had Rody and Cecil for my mounting needs. And even Sirius for several occasions.(Especially for endgame)

Ninja Ryu11 Uselessness? Hannibal? Ha ha. Yeah, I call some BS on that. Here we are, We Know it's Too Late. Hoping only to find some closure..! Silently waiting, Hear the calling..! Look into the wanting eyes, my Cherished!
I have legitimately never found a reason to even bother with Hannibal. He joins late, is in an awful class [ESP. in that game] and doesn't do anything that you don't have something else better for, well besides be a bad class and not do anything important.
His only real point is to talk to Sharlow so Sharlow gets Berserk.
But that's going off topic.
Frey has his uses on NM [Gutting Gordin like a pig is better plan], but him not existing on the higher difficulties really costs him. And it's not like I can't reclass someone better into mount, if I need it. There isn't really a notable advantage to "Mount" in SD, since reclassing isn't pooled, and there's zero commitment to it, save for weapon rank, but SD had a broken forge.
He, and basically everyone save for Marth himself, and Caeda, really, in Shadow Dragon doesn't have anything going characterwise. A few choice words early on, but other than that... nothing.
Now we are here, We know its too late! Hoping only to find some closure, Silently waiting, Hear the calling! Look into the wanting eyes, My Cherished!

Quote: I don't have much of an opinion on him since he's gotten the fastest "General Hannibal's Award of General Uselessness" Actually, I was more referring to when you stated this about Frey rather than Hannibal. Implying that he's as useless as hannibal? That is what I really don't understand. How is Frey useless? Okay, I guess he would be better utilized slightly more had he been available in the harder modes. But I don't see how it makes him useless at all. I think he's a fairly solid unit in all honestly. I don't really bother with reclassing units much in FE11, so I probably wouldn't know about it. This is going off topic, but the problem with Hannibal isn't necessarily him. I've already talked about him in one of the older best/worst topics for best/worst prepromotes.(I voted him for worst obviously) I do agree that he's not a very good unit. Monotonous recruitment and whatnot.. If he was in a different game, then it'd be a whole other story altogether. It's the fact that armor knights/Generals just plain suck in FE4. They're outclassed by mounts and especially Great Knights, that can do the exact same thing but have far superior movement.

I'm saying that in terms of being that unit that just doesn't get used. Like ever. [None are as useless as Hannibal though, since they usually have niche spots.]
I hand that award to Say'ri in Awakening [who goes from Green to Bench in about 0.5s] (actually change that, everyone who isn't a kid and is after Chapter 13 gets it), Danved/Devdan in Radiance and a few others throughout.
Frey is the earliest receiver of the "award" that I've ever had. Partially because he just doesn't exist on the higher modes, and because on my few normal playthrus, he got benched faster than the other Cavs, and I threw him into archer to get him out of the way. He could have use, but I bench him faster than Virion is what I'm saying.

Arden is more useless than Hannibal. But how about we not just say "they suck because I don't use them"? Mkay thanks.

I’d argue Arden>Hannibal, but that’s really not relevant and they’re both bad anyway.
This round’s Akaneia characters continue to provide uniquely nuanced aspects about them for discussion despite coming from the Akaneia era which has certain well known disadvantages. And again, a lot of it is because the remakes. Frey is our first DS-remake exclusive Akaneian character.
Yes, he is only on Normal Mode in FE11, which SUCKS. But if you happen to be on Normal Mode, he’s right on par with Cain/Abel, and starts with a D in Lances because instant Javelin-gratuity (if you really need a comparison, it’s sorta like being Franz instead of Forde or Kyle) Good growth distribution, easy to raise, etc… to compare him to even Virion, much less the pain-to-recruit-General-Horse-Embem is a huge insult to him. I’d actually imagine everyone would use him at some point or other just for the novelty of him being a new character for an old game.
And him being new in something old is precisely what’s most interesting to talk about, I think. They actually managed to contribute to the lore of Akaneia years later with the decoy thing and having a canonical role for that position is pretty cool and actually makes a character only available on one mode of the game manage to stand out (and in Akaneia, that’s an accomplishment). To be able to play a canonical sacrifice if only in Normal mode is really cool.
Except FE12, despite generally being a completely superior game to 11, decided to retcon damn near every death with substance (hey Michalis, how’s it goin’?) and have Frey, whose canonical sacrifice for Marth’s journey to even begin without which none of his journey would have been possible, mean far less. It’s not ******** cute and it cheapens him.
But him joining with Norne, the OTHER Normal-only new Akaneia character in FE12 IS pretty cute, at least.
And I have work today because duty (and overtime) never sleeps. Which means I won’t be updating this for a good long while. So people probably have about a half day left to post if they want.

How ironic that I picked a perfect time to play RD on hard mode recently and Eddie is character of the week. XD
Oh, Edward. I have some things to say about you. twisted
But with all seriousness, I actually don't think Edward is really a bad unit. It's just when compared to other units like Zihark or Mia, you'd much rather use them in your team than Edward.
He's your starting myrimidon member of the dawn brigade. And like most myrimidon units, they usually have tough problems with strength, where as they excel in the speed and skill area. Right at the beginning Edward is at level 1, and he's pretty much your only guy that can use swords well for the time. That is however, until you get a certain man in a chapter that isn't really that far off named Zihark who is freaking awesome! Or even Mia or Stefan would both be nice too...
-Ahem- Anyways, his starting skills available right off the bat are shove(Which is locked obviously since all units pretty much have this ability really...), critical +5 for that extra critical damage bonuses. And last but not least... the almighty wrath skill. I seriously love this skill. FE5, 9, and 10 are definitely my favorite versions of it. In a way wrath kind of does suit him as having low hp is pretty common for our Eddy. He is the master of taking axes to his face apparently!
But with those skills alone won't help him that much. He'll need some more helpful skills that can work in his favor. Like maybe vantage or something along those lines? That is assuming that if someone is planning on using him seriously. Now, I do think Edward actually has potential as a unit. It is possible for him to grow well, if one does give him the time to do so.(But then again we're talking about FE10 and how the structure is set up for that game) He has the light affinity if I remember correctly? It's alright I guess. It can grant attack and defensive stat bonuses, and along with some hit and critical rates too.
As for his personality. he tends to be kind of childish, optimistic, and cheery. He's more like the aspiring young swordsman with dreams that isn't very serious.(Which is apparent in that one scene with Nolan, Leo and Edward) I don't find him to be very interesting, but I honestly don't really have much wrong with his character really. But he does seem like a pretty cool guy though. I like that they try to give him some screentime with the Dawn Brigade members.

Actually, for a Myrmidon, Edward's Strength growth is shockingly high: 60% - the same as his Speed growth.
His downfall, if you want to call it that (because he is perfectly usable and he'll get the job done) is his durability. If you're going to use Edward, I think he's THE best candidate and beneficiary of the first Draco Shield in the game. Makes him take axes to the face much more effectively. The only reasons I prefer Zihark over him (and both can be used simultaneously) is Zihark requires much less Pt 1 Exp investment and has an Earth Affinity, the later point being huge for making Pt 3 of the Dawn Brigade much easier and giving him survivability in a way Edward can't match. Edward's offense is crazy good though and until Bexp evens them both out there's a chunk of the game where he's more lethal than Zihark. He's definitely one of the most potent offensive assets the DB has.
I know Rath is a huge fan and advocate of him.
Rath! You should post this week.

So then, statistically, how many axes can Eddy tank with his face by level on average?

I'm going through it currently so yeah... It's legendary. lol But though, what FD said about his 60% growth in strength is very impressive for a myrmidon. His growths in general is fairly good actually. Maybe I'll give him a go this time around... Well since I've never really given him a fair shot in RD truth be told. sweatdrop

I LOVE Edward!
I'll say it once and I'll say it again. He's one of your best DB units: use him.
Aside from Micaiah, I personally think you should focus on 3 1st tier DB units to train up for part 3 to make things much easier for you. They will highly likely make it to 2nd tier by the end of part 1. For me, those spots go to Aran, Nolan and Edward. And of course have Leonardo get his pot shots in, because help is help.
I don't really get this whole 'tanking exes to the face' joke... I've never had a problem with him surviving. And considering he has wrath, it's advantageous for him to take some hits anyway.
Although he DOESN'T have Wrath in Awakening! They gave him Zeal instead for some reason. Lame. Why change his innate skill when it exists, IS? Disappoint.
I can use Zihark and Edward at the same time and by the end of part 1, Edward's not far behind Zihark in levels. I wouldn't say Edward is better than Zihark, but he's not vastly inferior by any means. This also isn't best/worst, where we're supposed to compare/contrast units of the same class. Edward is one of the most capable units you'll get early on and will serve you well until the end of the game. On my personal file, he actually maxed out every single stat (except mag, I think, but he might have) and that's not the most common thing to happen with units. Averagely, he'll end up maxing out 6 of the 8 stats anyway, so I wasn't just outrageously RNG blessed, either. He's just that good. Plus he gets his own sword, which is better than a silver sword. USE HIM.
But him as a unit isn't why I like him... I don't really care about that in FE games, because no matter who you use, your units will end up being better than your enemy and capable of handling things. What drew me to him was his character and design. He's such a loveable goofball and I love it. He has such a bright personality. I also like his friendship with Leonardo and how they work off each other, as well as Nolan. I enjoy his naivety, his loyalty, and how he can still be so cheerful despite all he's gone through. That takes strength of heart.
Basically, he's like a mixture of Abel and Jaren and you better love him or you're wrong. 8<
