It was here, then, that they were to be sacrificed, that they were to give themselves up and offer themselves to the goddesses that stood before them. Agile had not been the most prominent when it came to giving them what they had asked for; still, he did not wish to rebel against them, nor did he wish to lose what little he had of himself in them.

He watched the statues with a pensive expression, wondering about the offering.

Sacrifice yourself to us.

It was perhaps an easy thing, a simple thing - straightforward and unabashed in its blatant proposal, but giving oneself up was not the simple thing. It was the opposite - or maybe it was simultaneously simple and unsimple.

His thoughts were making little sense. Agile shook his head, took a breath, and looked up at the goddesses again and then at the red, red moon above their heads with its sanctimonious grin plastered across its toothy face.

He remembered a vague voice, a passing whim, a flight of fancy -

- it was gone, as quick as it had come, and he did not remember any of it. A little disconcerting, perhaps, but at least the sensations remained behind - happiness, wariness, anxiety, anxiousness, fear, solidity, familiarity...it sank into him and he reached for it, trying to grasp it...

He did not have enough substance to grab it.

Still...

He supposed a part of it was from a lack of determination, though he probably should have fixed that by now. There were others around him, others like him who were moving forward - except instead of moving forward, he seemed to be moving backwards.

It was a problem.

Nai glanced up at the moon above his head, taking a small breath. There was a small smile on his face, nothing near like somewhat horrific smirk stretching in a bloody red in the sky, but a smile nonetheless. He was not afraid, though he thought perhaps he should have been.

The colors blended together, and he could see them, and he could feel them.

What do you want from me?

I want you.

And there it was, the ultimate sacrifice. Nai made a soft noise, giving a shake of his head, and pressed his fingers to his chest, idly passing over the small glow of color emanating from it.

This name is not my own.

Nai's fingers pressed harder, reaching...

They sank deep into his chest.

He didn't appreciate it.

The self-satisfying smirk grated on his nerves, made him feel ill at ease. If he looked at it too long, it felt as though it were laughing at him, and the very last thing he wanted was to be laughed at.

He did not do well with being laughed at. Nor did he do well with the assumption that he was somehow less of a being, somehow less of an existence than the moon itself. He could taste the anger and frustration on his tongue as it spoke, could hear the word queen reverberating inside of his head.

The choice, at least, was an easy one, at least for Agony. Where others hesitated, he stepped forward with his head held high and his hand already sinking into his chest, fingers closing around the heart that gave him life.

Except did it really?

Parrows felt slightly anxious as he moved forward, hands gently swinging at his sides. He debated on simply walking up to the nearest figure like himself, asking what they were doing, which path they were choosing to take - except that seemed rude, somehow; personal. A choice made only for oneself, rather than for the benefit of others.

Things flashed before his eyes - ruins, buildings, a river -

Parrows gave a small sigh. His name felt awkward and heavy on his tongue. He took a step forward, through the door, into the green beyond, and slid his fingers along his chest, idly pressing down.

Give yourself to me.

Was it so easy, though? Parrows hesitated only a moment -

- and then he was pulling out his heart and everything was shifting around him.

It was not the moon.

He sort of wished it was.

It was sort of awe-inspiring, Rune decided, as he stood with his hands on his hips, eyes tracing the malicious smirk, the decidedly mad smile stretched too thinly across red teeth. It should have scared him - or, at the very least, made him nervous.

Except it didn't, and that was fine.

What was not fine, not fine at all, was the decision he had to make in the next several minutes, and that meant contemplating all of the factors, taking in the experiences and the chaos and the confusion.

Rune did not like making decisions, but it was, unfortunately, unavoidable.

The statues were the same as ever, but Sonja knew something was different this time. He could feel something calling him, calling to his entire being. He could not resist this magnetic force, and so he followed it towards the door that had formed there.

He was about to open it, but paused, hesitating as he read what was inscribed there. He had to sacrifice his heart? But it was...it was him! How could he do something like this?

Sonja could hear the whispers of the goddesses, their voices still repeating the promises they had made him. He could not forget such promises. There was no way for him to go back. What would he go back to? A world of black and red?

Slowly, the shadow opened the door.

The room was just like the current one.

He sighed in relief. So nothing was going to jump out at him. He began to walk through this room but stopped, his eyes drawn to the statues. They were different now, their colours had changed. So had their appearance, if only slightly (Ruin's appearance made him yelp in fear however. She wasn't going to come alive now, was she...?) Each of their plaques also read the same; Sacrifice yourselves for us. These words cause him to shake, his mind not ready to give up such a thing.

It was then he noticed others in the room such as himself. Other beings, who's hearts he could see clearly. Their changing colours shone brightly with the memories they contained.

Memories...

Sonja gasped as he recalled what had transpired in the tasks, each memory hitting him like a ton of bricks. And with these memories came a name that kept repeating itself, but every time he tried to recall it would slip away, floating in the far reaches of his mind. He closed his eyes to focus on trying to remember, but knew he had no time left to do such a thing.

The floor beneath him began to shake, his legs giving way as red flashed before his eyelids. He opened them, looked up at the source of the red.

The moon was full.

He screamed in terror as it smiled down on him, and his mind was sent into pure agony as it spoke into his mind, making sure he heard each and every single, painful word. The moon, the queen, demanded he return his heart to her.

Getting to his feet, the shadow gasped as the sky exploded into colours of gold and green, creating such amazing patterns in the sky that were only limited by his imagination. It was a awe-inspiring spectacle, and it drew away the terror of the red colour from his mind. He was aware that Sonja was not his real name. Something else was, and yet he could still not recall it.

Everything was in turmoil as he realized he must choose between the colours. The ground beneath him would change within a split second as each color battled it out.

It didn't take long for him to decide. The Gold was what he sought. The world then began to solidify, greens and reds fading away to brilliant gold. He was in a hallway now, and before him sat the brilliant crown upon a gold throne. Sonja stood before this crown, hesitating a moment before he thrust his hands into his chest. The pain was excruciating, not unlike the time when the evil figure had cut out his heart. But it was his choice now, and he pulled it out, it's brilliance taking his breath away as he offered it to the crown.

He was still in pain as the memories he had gained were leaving him. He had nothing left now, no heart, and it hurt. He could see people were coming towards him now, shouting a name he could not remember, as his world faded to black.

"I don't know." That was the thing, wasn't it? These memories, they had shown her not to be a proud person at all.

Ideih at least made sense, and while they had only just met, Ross felt a stab in her heart to see her go. "The end is the beginning? Maybe. Or maybe, I think, the answer is that a circle has no beginning or end." And maybe that was a little morbid to pass for final words to the girl, but they felt like someone else's for some reason--just impromptu after hearing Vaneda's comment. Spontaneous or not, though, it . . . felt alright. Natural, even. She smiled at the girl's back for as long as she could see her.

And as one passed, another one came. She was turning to her friend to agree, that perhaps they should leave, but then she spotted-- "Agile!" He looked a little disoriented, and immediately she was taking Vaneda's hand and dragging her along to yet another person (perhaps the wrong person was being called Pet, as it seemed Ross had the leash here).

"Too much thinking Ross." Vaneda said all way to familiarly to the girl. As if it wasn't the first time she had this conversation, or something close to it. Or maybe it was the laziness she felt at thinking.

"We just keep turning that left turn." Vaneda chuckled as she was being pulled away. "Agile?" Her eyes landed on a boy, and yet another sense of familiarity ran through her. And like Ideih and Ross, he too wore the blue pendant. "Hello Handsome."

He arrived at the shrine, a sense of nostalgia washing over him.
Ruin. Paranoia. Longing.
The final trial. Promise of not being forgotten. His fragments, his memories.

This feeling... he's felt it before. Someone calling... beckoning.
Stepping forward, he headed towards the voice, pushing past the fog, once him, now not.
There is a door. THE door. He remembers it, same but different. But this time... this time, what it asked for, was much more precious.

Offer to us your Heart.

It's a little frightening, scary. But he's come this far, hasn't he? To turn back now would be to give up everything. He endured so much, sacrificed so much. To give up now...
No. Not now. He was so close, he could feel it. One more trial, and everything would be over.

With a creak, the last door was open, and though it looked the same, something was different. The goddesses seemed to be present. Alive. Awakened.

The others... yes, he remembers this. He can feel them, their heart. It's the same, yet... different. They were no longer just single entities he bore no relation to, but some, new memories were created. New feelings, emotions... Things learned, shared, renewed. There was a bond now, a sort of connection between them, and he could feel it. He could feel the change in them, and in himself too. He looked down at his heart, touched it. It no longer bore that bright vibrant blue he once started out with, but was mixed in with hints of other colours, making the hue shift, never staying a constant colour.

It brought such a strange feeling, these colours, but more than that, there were... memories, new and old. He remembered the voices now, the voices from the fragments, and though he didn't recognize them, he remembered them. And then, there was that woman, the one who kept appearing in his memories... what did it all mean? He didn't understand. It was all so different from what the goddesses had told him.

And then there is a word. THE word. The one he could never remember no matter what. It was a name, he was sure of it.
... but what? What name? WHOSE name? Was it his? If so, why couldn't he remember?

He desperately wanted to remember, but now was not the time. He simply didn't have time anymore. His foot shifted as he felt the ground beneath him crack, and another crack...

Lifting his head, he saw.
The moon. They were out of time.
Emotions overwhelmed him, the sight of red drawing him in. And the voice, THAT voice that spoke to him, addressed him, became him.

She stared at the gates. She heard the voices. Which one? Where did she want to go? Why did she have to go? She didn't mind sacrificing things to the Goddesses, but... her heart. It hurt last time she lost it. And she didn't even know her real name. How was she supposed to give her heart up when she didn't even know who she was? Why couldn't she remember?

Rhryse shook her head, confused. She knew she'd have to make a decision. She just didn't know.... so much.

She looked around her, at the other figures with bright hearts. Some were thinking, some were choosing, some were offering already. It must have been nice to be so certain.

Her eyes slipped over a form that was more familiar than the rest, though she'd nearly missed him. It was only on the second glance did she notice that she knew him. Her first friend in this world.

She wore a sad smile as she made her way to him, stopping only when she was close enough to touch him. She put a hand on his arm. "Kaje?" That was his name, right? Or did he have a name he couldn't remember, too? "Where will you go?"

The regained memories made his head spin and Breuse found himself gasping, reeling from the sudden return, the filling of the blank spaces in his mind. It was partial, never complete; he had never thought it would be complete, anyway, and it feels as if they belong to him, yet they also don't. It is him in those memories, and also not him, Breuse thought--

No. He realized with a start. There's also a name. A name that bubbled up in his throat but there was nothing. He leaned against a wall and tried coughing, choking it out, but he could not remember, no matter how hard he racked his mind.

The moon grew closer and closer, disrupting him from that important memory he had been trying to dislodge. Red, green and gold danced in the sky, colored tendrils curling around each other, and he realized then and there that he had to make a choice.

Creation. He thought, closing his eyes. It came easily to him. After all, all he yearned and craved for was knowledge. The knowledge to understand.

He was moving forward, in a trance.
His last task, and then it would be over. One more thing, and he would finally be done.

"Will you give up so much-

"-when you have experienced so little in return?"

It was BECAUSE he wanted to experience more that he gave up so much. Did not all things require sacrifices?
He was broken out of the trance when the sky split, spilling out streams of gold and green. No longer possessed, consumed by that shade of red, he blinked, remembering. His memories. His name.
This was not his real name. His real name was-

He stiffened when he felt a hand upon him, and turned.
It was her, that shadow he met, the first one who did not bear a blue core, the one, though he didn't know why, that he seemed to bear the closest connection to out of all the others.

"Rhryse..." his voice was soft, his hand touching hers.
Though the red no longer possessed him, he knew he had already made his choice.

"Where I go... I don't think you can come."

Thankfully, the theoretical bargains for time that Simmy made appeared to be allowing more than just a few extra seconds - she spent that in triplicate, waiting for him while he waited for her, slowly arriving at the realization that she had no idea what she was doing. There was not even a memory that had found its way to her that offered any especially beneficial knowledge of what to do, and she was a fraction of a moment away from shrinking away from him in shame when he laughed and gave her (most of) the help she needed.

"Yes," she giggled, smiling, playfully swinging her feet--

Until she leaned forward just enough for the tiniest brush of a kiss. Then she froze, eyes wide, a crooked smile spreading from the place her lips touched his. It wasn't familiarity this time, not a memory that brought bad or good or anything in between. It was the lack of it, the reaction she felt from this one last thing she'd wanted to do that was hers alone, not stolen by any Simmy before her.

"I like this," she said, words shortly filled with pleasant amazement before returning to their more typical tentative whisper. "Maybe just..one more...?"

And she tried again, hoping that the goddesses would understand. If they didn't, this might not be the worst thing to do for all of the foreseeable future.

Maiden could feel it somehow. The goddesses were calling them back to the shrine again. It was time for another moment of homage. Every time they called, it was for something they wanted from them. The fog was thicker this time when the summon came through, facing the door that he had seen in days past that opened up to the statues again. It was still the same, the three that have been with them from the very beginning and the four empty pedestals, the places that were waiting for the select few.

It was naught going to be without another sacrifice, he wasn't sure what it was going to be this time. The next room was the one he held his breath in, the current goddesses were there, not just one but the three in one place, it was a terrifyingly oppressive aura in here that made him shrink in upon himself as he passed.

Cores and hearts were everywhere, surrounding him and resonating with his own. It wasn't just the simple colored ones this time, they seemed to have grown and developed, shifting and pulsing with something hidden in its depths, much like his own. It was once just yellow but now was alive in a kaledioscope of red, blue, yellow and white., with color and memories.

These memories, he could recall now, memories of this person that had a connection with him. These tiny images that went along with the task they were given, horrid tasks that tested the psyche that came flooding back, threatening to rock him off his feet from the shock or recalling. The people he remembered, the people that he forgot not too long and the things he done to reclaim those memories only to forget them.

The sky ripped open with a mighty crack that demanded his attention, looking up into the cloudless sky and seeing the massive moon that looked back at him, a dreadful sight and had him falling on his butt , whispered voices coming from the moon that made the hairs on his neck raise in alarm.

He was stepping forward thought, an unconscious reaction that pulled his body back up on its feet and moving forward, one step at a time. It didn't feel right, he knew it deep down, but he was far too deep in the moon's pull. Another step that had his brain screaming in alarm was made.

The spell the moon had was thankfully, broken with the two others that rose against it. The overpowering red was held at bay with the power that was green and gold, instead of blind homage, there was a choice to be made this time. A choice to where the heart of his went, that his being would go to, this fake name that had been given to himself, it was going to be for one of them.

The false name of Maiden, was going to green.

She was the sweetest little thing, swinging as she hung in his arms, pressing her lips against his like a first kiss -

When her eyes widened, his furrowed, as if struck by how odd it was to feel that thrill of a first kiss. Of course it felt that way, why wouldn't it? Why did this come as a surprise to him? Why did it feel strange that they'd only just begun?

Perhaps, he reasoned, it was because everything was about to end as well.

His lips formed a crooked smile that lifted one side of his face, endlessly amused with the way she reacted. He just wanted to take care of her. To show her - everything. But there was nothing left to show.

He put his finger against her lips as she leaned in a second time, and chuckled. "Okay, but like this."

He bent his head down, pressed his lips against hers, and then in a way he could tell he knew how, he parted them, forcing hers to part as well. He didn't think; he didn't need to. This, this was familiar. This was second nature. Kissing, and fighting. Those were the things he could tell he knew how to do well.

"Oh." Whatever bit of happiness had been on her face fell away, though she didn't necessarily look sad. She tried not to look sad. "Why not?"

It was a simple question, and she was afraid she knew the answer. Would it even matter? The final sacrifice was everything; their heart and their memories. They were about to give everything up, so why was she suddenly so sad? Why had that one, simple sentence made her heart hurt?

She waited for his answer, her hand still on his arm.

Of course he was in the Shrine.

It was, he thought, almost exactly as he'd met it, this time: seven pedestals surrounding a large grey pillar. Three of them were topped with lovely black statues, familiar and loving and distant. The remaining four are...empty. As if Sarviur expected any differently. He smiled to himself, walking up to them and brushing his fingers over their bases. There were new inscriptions, this time: but of course there were. He drunk their presence in, not sure if he liked the mention of fragments and memories and - a wall? Oh, yes. Sarviur's lip curled as he paused briefly before Paranoia. No, he reminded himself. If there was no wall, it was Paranoia's concern, and not Sarviur's. He moved on.

Your fragments, your memories will guide the way. Sacrifice them for us. We love you most.

It was Sarviur's Goddess. Of course, he thought, strangely heavy-hearted, though Sarviur remembered little but for - but for, well, what the Goddesses had given him. Did it matter?

Sarviur had a task to complete, no matter how difficult. Fog brushed against his shoulders and his ears (cold, cold), white and strangely silent. Sarviur had become accustomed to the voices speaking low in his hears the past few days, and he felt faintly disturbed. He'd been the fog, once, and he'd been - he'd been full of memories, and voices, and brief fleeting images. Still, someone called to him (his Goddess, he thought, though he heard the voice within, and it was not her familiar, sweet tone). Here was a door.

Offer to us your Heart, it read, an ornate gate with pretty orbs in a rainbow of colors.

Had he ever had a choice?

Sarviur stepped forward, only to hear nothing and see - to see only what he'd just seen. Three Goddesses, seven pedestals, a central pillar. The Goddesses were colored, now, and he headed without thinking for the blue one before realizing, steps away, that her shape was Paranoia's. Sacrifice yourself for us, she said, and he turned: to the purple Goddess, a lovely strong woman in colors he'd never seen on a Goddess. But she was undoubtedly his, clad in hearts from head to toe and bearing a large platter of treats. Sacrifice yourself for us, she said.

He kept looking, admiring quietly the figures that were already materializing around him. Shadows, like he. They'd probably all served their Goddesses, and well, this week. The hearts within them made his own swell with emotion and admiration and familiarity - they'd all worked together, after all, to slay the beasts from the fog. Sarviur's heart danced, and he thought: it's not blue any more, is it?

Then he was overtaken by an onslaught of words. Images. Memories. Little clauses, strangely familiar. A snippet of song - his mother's laugh, nervous.

But where was the name? he thought, frantic. It was such a short, easy word, something he'd clearly heard every day for -

Red, red, red, the moon was emerging, blooming across his eyelids, and its shadows shifted ominously. The sky was red, and all the fog had vanished with the rest of its color. There was a strange, malicious voice: "I once would have been a queen..."

He had to return his heart. But where to?

She approached, following the calling, the strings that tugged, the puppeteers of her existence reeling her in for one last offering, one final task of her worth. It was a pull too strong to ignore, even had she wanted to ignore it. A pull that led her to a vast and pillared room, to statues and to emptiness as she had seen before. The familiar three with their words etched in plaques beneath them, the words never the same day to day, and this time speaking of a fourth trial, of a final sacrifice.

And there it was, that calling again. She moved herself away from the statutes, eyes lingering on them only a moment longer before she instead found herself gazing upon a door, approaching it with quick strides, and reading the words emblazoned on its surface.

Offer to us your heart.

She hadn't denied the goddesses yet, and she'd be damned if she did it now. She pushed through that door with barely a thought, barely a care except to finish this now, to give herself to the goddesses and be judged, weighed, and deemed either worthy or unworthy of a heightened position. She pushed through the door...

.....And found herself in one much the same, only with statutes that were minutely altered. She took time to inspect these as well now, reading the newly inscribed lettering.

It seemed the final sacrifice would be as she had guessed. Her heart, herself.

The other pedestals were empty as before, but as she looked around, she realized that the room itself was not. There were other figures and forms, other hearts of all different colors. The sight of them all made her look down at her own, at its many colors, at its many emotions, at it's...

The memories came back in such a rush she nearly staggered. Images, voices, words. A name. A name? Who's name was it? For some reason when she tried to focus on it, it spun away, just out of reach, like those fragments she had obtained for the goddess in her very first task, hovering just out of reach. She closed her eyes to try and reach further...

Crack!

Eyes fluttered open, widening as first one cracking sound, and then many others to follow, split the air.

And then the sky became red.

The voice was impossible to ignore, it's words all consuming. She moved forward, and the world began to change yet more. It was like chaos and strife had decided to meet up for an afternoon, and their battlefield was the sky. Green and gold began to overwhelm the red, but not completely.

And then, just like that, it was time to make her choice.

But not yet. It was not that she wasn't ready. In fact, she felt more comfortable and at peace with her surroundings and with what she needed to do then she really could have explained. It wasn't that she didn't want to do what the goddesses wished, but just that....something held her back, just long enough for her to let her eyes wander away from the sky, back to those figures around her who yet remained, and first finding a familiar sight as though drawn to him.

The growly man.

She did wonder for just a moment if she should even bother to approach. He had not seemed to care much for her company before but...but she could not deny there was something there, something about him that was achingly familiar, something intriguing enough for her to move towards him, to stop in front of him, to finally, as this might be her last chance to do so, speak to him.

"Growly man." She greeted him. "Do you have another name I can call you by?"

Did she really need an answer?
He shook his head, a bitter smile on his face.
Even if she did pursue the path he took, which he sincerely hoped she wouldn't, they were giving up their hearts. Even if they went together, they wouldn't end up together. None of them would, he presumed. This was the final challenge, the final task. It wasn't just memories being demanded of them. This time, it was their heart. Their core. The very thing that kept them in this world, and without it...

"This will probably be the last time we see each other. Sorry."

He hesitated, wondering if he said too much. The look on her face made him frown, as if he had said something wrong. But this was the truth. He didn't want to give her false hope.

Which was why he really shouldn't have done what he did.
Without thinking, he reached out with his other hand, touching her cheek, and leaning down slightly, he pressed his lips against hers. His eyes closed, letting himself have this last memory. Just one last one, before everything was taken away. That was ok, wasn't it? She felt the same way, to some point. So this was ok... or was it?

At last, he pulled away, thumb brushing against her cheek once more, giving her a sad smile before he turned, turned and ran. He didn't want her to see this. Didn't want to see her cry. He had made this decision, and he wasn't going to turn back, not now.

Fingers dug into his chest, his heart. It hurt, but still he pushed deeper, hand wrapping around his core. The gold and green faded from his vision, until all that was left was red, the crown before him.

It hurt, it hurt a lot, and with each movement, another piece of him fell away, another memory.
Finally, as his entire hand wrapped around it, he pried it out, resisting the urge to cry out from the pain. He didn't want her to hear, didn't want her to know how much it hurt. It would only make her cry, and he didn't want to see that.

"You have made the correct choice. This is the end for you, but the beginning for me. Your sacrifice will not be in vain."

He heard voices now, someone running towards him. It didn't matter now. Nothing did. Not anymore.

In the end, there was only Destruction.
