Karleen is antisocial and distant when it comes to just about everything, and for scenerios when she isn't and people can get words out of her mouth, she is instead somewhat brash and sarcastic; satire lining most of her words. Karleen has mounting insecurities and self-hatred, and often shuts herself away in her workshop to tinker in solitude. She tries her best to keep herself away from personal relationships after the betrayal of her family, and tends to stick to business relationships instead. When engineering for people, Kar works on a "I don't need or want to know" sort of mindset; as her customers are villains and wardens alike; ignorance is bliss, she likes to recite. Karleen enjoys her work, and thus the workshop is open for jobs most of the time; but there are spans of weeks or even months when Karleen falls in to puts of depression and the workshop is closed. Karleen finds herself often avoiding medication, due to previous dependencies, but isn't against drinking alcohol and either gets it through illegal means or through payment for smaller jobs. The young woman seems to have a weakness for children and animals, often letting them in while others who have known her for longer are shut out.

» BACKGROUND
After her trigger event, Karleen left her parents house and filed for emancipation; the court battle took four months and once she was free of her parents, Karleen admitted herself to a rehabilitation center to recover from her Xanax and Adderall dependency. Karleen stayed in that center for several months, coming out of it a few months after her seventeenth birthday. Free, but now unsure of what to do or where to go, Karleen was homeless for a short amount of time. It was here than the woman found her powers; she first made money off a gimmicky street act where she would tell people if they were lying or not, people called her the Human Lie Detector for some time. Once she had enough to keep a place at the local homeless shelter and to start saving for a home, Karleen found her other gift. Tinkering here and there, she found something that wasn't there before; she possessed an innate talent with propulsion systems and the science behind it. Using what ever left over money she had, she created a jetpack and sold it off to a local Ward hero. The Toybox eventually caught wind of a new tinker and extended it's invitation for her to have a safe space where she wouldn't have to take sides; and Karleen graciously accepted the offer. She didn't like the hero or the villain gig, she felt it was too polarizing and too stiffing for her tastes.
» TRIGGER EVENT
Ever since she was a child, Karleen loved science; you couldn't get her away from it. Her birthday and christmas wishes came in the forms of different science pre-packaged experiments that she could do at home. This was only natural, as her parents and their families going back several generations were first rate scientists and headed a company called Ouvere Tech. When she was small, all her family wanted her to do was learn to love science, to thrive in it, to do what made her happy. But that pretty much all changed when Karleen's first younger sister, Sarah, came along. From a young age the girl showed promise with her advances in both knowledge and her capabilities. Sarah learned to talk before Karleen did, she learned to walk before Karleen had learned to walk, anything that Karleen did-- Sarah did it better. Soon Karleen found herself with less of her parent's affection than several years prior, and still being so young she didn't realize why. It was only when her two younger sisters, twins Joslynn and Jolene, that it finally came to her; though she was the oldest, she was not the smartest or the more talented.
From that moment on, Karleen realized that she had to work harder and study more if she was going to catch up and surpass her sisters some day. Her parents didn't seem to care much about her shortcomings at first, but as highschool neared and Sarah had reached a highschool proficiency before she had, and Jolynn and Jolene were close behind, that her parents began to pressure her. It was soft coaxing at first, but as time went on and her parents got older, Karleen found herself suddenly a disappointment to the family. It didn't matter that she loved science and tried her best anymore, only that she got B's on tests that her sisters got A's on. It was at this time, in the eighth grade, that Karleen began a destructive path in order to try to please her parents. She spent all of her allowances on anything she could to to get ahead; tutors, studying programs, extra classes, anything. Karleen began to sleep and eat less in echange for more time to study, she stopped seeing friends, she dropped her extracurricular classes, and traded study halls for classes and private tutoring sessions. No matter how hard she tried, through the next three years of schooling, her sisters were always so far ahead of her.
When Karleen hit sixteen, her parents finally broke it to her; the CEO position they had promised her all her life was now in danger, and if she couldn't show favorable results before her seventeenth birthday, they would give the position to one of her sisters. This was the worst year of Karleen's life, everyone seemed to distant and cold, like she was living in a world far away from everyone. The young girl turned to drug abuse, mainly Xanax and Adderall, in an attempt to produce favorable result for her parents. IT seemed to work for a while, her parents finally seemed proud of her again when she won the first place spot in her city's regional Siemens competition. The quips and comments about her being slow and useless stopped, she felt loved again. Several months passed, and it seemed that she was once again going to be in a good place to take the CEO position when she overheard her parents' phone conference in another room. They had, instead of waiting, given the CEO position to one of her distant cousins she hadn't seen since she was at least three; they would hold the spot till one of her genius sisters could take their place at the head of the company. Karleen had never felt so betrayed, so embarrassed. Why did she ever think her parents would ever trust her, ever love her, again?

Personality: Karleen is bright and kind, and often bubbly. There are times when she gets shy, or too self conscious, and she will distance herself from the people around her. Karleen is very open minded and accepting of pretty much everything, but this also makes her quite naive and gullible; and Karleen has a bit too much faith in humanity. The young girl shows much love for people, pokemon, and nature alike; and will put herself in harms way to protect either. It's difficult for her too feel strong negative emotions like hate, but once hurt Karleen can become very closed off and defensive. Kar doesn't like crying or showing any negative emotions in public and will often bottle up any sadness or anger she feels, in fear that she might be called a crybaby.
Strengths: Karleen is very emotionally and mentally strong, and also very smart for someone of her age despite being naive. It's not uncommon for Karleen to act more mature than her age as well, and she excels in her studies when it comes to just about anything. Karleen is amazing when it comes to artistic pursuits and can read and write fairly fast; often finishing a nice thick book in a day.
Weaknesses: Karleen isn't a physical person and therefor lacks in most physical categories; she hates P.E and running is like her own personal hell. Karleen will avoid sports the most she can and as a consequence of doing so, the young girl is fairly out of shape even though she is quite skinny. Karleen becomes somewhat over-reactive and grumpy when hungry or tired, and will often throw fits when either. Karleen has a problem with self doubt and self confidence issues, which are very internalized.
Biography: Karleen was born on a beautiful sunny day to an artist and a pokemon trainer in Lilycove city in Hoenn; the couple's first and only child. Karleen was an happy accident, but her parents didn't bring in much money and her father was often gone in search of a challenge for him and his pokemon. Though a blurr of happiness and color, Karleen remembers a few memories of this time; growing berries with her mother, playing in the shallows of the coast, playing with the pokemon her mother used to help her around her house-- her favorite was their skitty. It was when Karleen turned five that her father went missing; at first they had thought nothing about it. Her father was sometimes gone for weeks upon weeks, camping and having fun with his pokemon. Two years passed, and on her father's birthday, one of her father's pokemon finally made his way back to their home.
When they found her father's ninjask at their door, exhausted and dirty and hungry, they knew something was horribly horribly wrong. After taking the time to nurse the pokemon back to health, they let the pokemon guide them back to their father. Durring his trip, the man had fallen down one of Hoenn's many mountains and outcrops and bashed his head, causing amnesia. Her father had already found another family and remembered nothing of his other life; her mother was heartbroken and so was she. At first her fathered seemed spooked, unwilling to have anything to do with his old life, but once he saw how much his pokemon loved these two strangers he didn't remember, he agreed to try and balance both families. Karleen's father never regained his memories, but after a while traveling between the two families and spending time with both became a normality-- or at least as normal as that situation could get.
When Karleen told her mother that she was interested in a profession with pokemon, her mother was hesitant-- even downright against it at first. But eventually she came to terms with Karleen's love of pokemon and agreed to send Karleen off to school to pick what she'd like to do with her pokemon filled future.

Ky opened the door to the tower, only to be nearly pelted with a box of tools and lyrium. Cullen stared at her from his desk, his eyes wide; his golden hair was a mess, his face was pale, his eyes were clouded. He looked sickly, and in shock; it was clear he hadn't expected the Inquisitor to come barging through the door right that second. Kytrnn stood there for a moment, there was a tenseness in the air that was so thick she could almost run her hands through it, crackling and rolling; her commander wasn't doing so well.
"Maker's Breath!" Cullen started, seeming to be trying very hard to compose himself, "I-I didn't hear you enter, I-I..." His gaze diverted from her-- to the floor, the wall --anything to not meet hers. "F-Forgive me." He shifted his weight, still not meeting her eyes, his jaw clenched.
Ky let out a breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding the whole time, fidgeting a bit. "Cullen, if you need to talk..." Cullen began to move around his desk, but it was clear he was weakened; it was audible in his voice when he spoke once more.
"You don't-” The templar stumbled forward, barely catching himself on the corner of said desk. Now worried the small Dalish elf made her way from the door to the desk, her fear for the well being of her friend clear on her face. Cullen raised a hand, trying to stop her from moving closer; his voice was gruff, full of pain and anger. "I never meant for this to interfere..." Kytrnn's brows pulled together, crumpling the fine lines of the tattoo on her face.
"I know Cullen, I know. I believe you." Cullen smirked, but it wasn't his normal half-cocked grin... there was something twisted under it.
"For whatever good it does, promises mean nothing if I cannot keep them..." The man finally straightened up, his body growing tenser by the second.
And then he finally opened up; for the first time since they had met, Cullen began to tell Kytrnn about himself. He told her about the Circle in Ferelden; how he was tortured by blood mages that rebelled. His eyes were distant yet angry. Whether he was angry at himself or angry at the world, Ky couldn’t tell. He told her about how they tried to change him, break his mind. Every word dripped with a thick hatred, a sort of bitter sarcasm.
"How can you be the same person after that?" He questioned, staring out the window behind him, a sharp laughter escaping his lips between the words. "Still... I wanted to serve, so they sent me to Kirkwall. I trusted my Knight-Commander, and for what? Hm? A fear of mages that ended in madness..." Kytrnn could only watch her heart growing heavy with every word the Templar spoke, her lips sealed shut to let him vent. "Kirkwall's Circle fell, innocent people died in the streets--" Cullen turned and met Ky's gaze head on for the first time, with an burning intensity she hadn't seen in them before. "Can't you see why I want nothing to do with that life?"
Kytrnn once again tried to move towards her friend, wanting to comfort him, to hold him, to do anything to help him. "Of course I can, I-" Cullen cut her off again, the anger seeming to fade a bit only to reveal more pain.
"Don't." He said, taking in a rattling breath, bringing a hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose as if it would make everything go away like a headache. "You should be questioning what I've done..." The man's voice broke, as if on the verge of tears. That scared the elf more than anything, even through all they had been through; she had never seen Cullen cry. Seeming to gain a bit more strength, Cullen moved away from the desk and Kytrnn followed him, trying to stay close while giving the man his space. "I thought this would be better," he started, his breathing becoming almost ragged now, "That I would regain some sort of control over my life but..." Cullen began to pace anxiously, his hands fluttering to and from his face in exasperation, "These. Thoughts. Won't. Leave. Me." He shook his head, seeming disappointed in himself. "How many lives depend on our success?"
Growing more and more worried by the moment, Kytrnn watched as Cullen grew more frantic. The anger was back again, as it had faded more a moment. He was back to not meeting her gaze again, back to looking at anything but her. "I swore myself to this cause! I will not give less to the Inquisition than I did to the Chantry! I should be taking it..." Cullen's voice had become an angry rasp at this point, dripping with self-hatred. The templar had finally come to a momentary rest by one of the bookshelves in the room. He gripped his fists tightly to his chest before suddenly punching one of them, sending books rattling to the ground and causing Kytrnn to jump at least an inch. "I should be taking it..." He repeated, carefully lowering his fist like it would break if he moved too fast.
Taking a deep breath and measuring her words carefully, she started to move over to Cullen who had finally ceased his frantic pacing. "You already give enough Cullen... I'm not asking you for more." Cullen back at Kytrnn, seeming surprised at her answer, and he finally turned to face her once more. "The Inquision can be your chance to start over," she continued, offering a soft smile to him, "If you want it to be." The man seemed to deflate a bit, all the anger and sadness and pain slowly leaving him.
"I don't know if that's possible." He admitted, his voice just a husk now, it was clear he was exhausted. Kytrnn felt that need again, to hold him, to make sure he knew it would be okay. She moved to him, placing a hand on his arm, looking in to his eyes. This was probably the closest she had been to him since she made her decision.
"It is." She felt that pull to him again as she looked deep in to his eyes, trying to get him to believe her words, believe in himself. The silence stretched for moments upon moments as they looked at each other; what they had before was cut off so abruptly, with no closure. They had said nothing to each other about their dead romance after the attack on Haven. She didn't even know where they truly stood now.
Cullen let out a shuttering breath, finally breaking whatever trance they had been in, giving in. "Alright." Kytrnn let go, hesitating for a moment before doing so. What was wrong with her? Why couldn't she just let her feelings go? The dalish elf swallowed hard, looking away, and put distance between her and Cullen. She didn't deserve him or Solas, she didn't; how could she deserve either of them when she couldn't even make a solid decision on who she loved more? Cullen asked for some time alone and she happily agreed, she needed a break from his intensity for fear of being swept away by it and making a decision she would regret.
C H A P T E Rx O N E The Heavens Part, Revealing Hell
Pain shot through her whole body, like the air itself was trying to peal her skin off with sandpaper. Darkness was everywhere, but ahead of her on top of a mountain was a beautiful and blinding light; the light seemed to be shaped almost like a person. The red haired elf stumbled forward, her blue-green eyes glazed and full of pain, trying to reach the light ahead of her. Once she arrived at the base of the mountain she heard a horrid noise, like the air escaping the world and a thousand hisses combined in to one. Kytrnn's head snapped backwards, looking at the sound, the fear in her chest hammering like a horse's hooves. Giant spiders began to swarm her from nowhere and everywhere all at once, determined to catch her and most likely kill her.
Without a moment's hesitation the elf made a break for it, sprinting up the side of the mountain as fast as her weary legs could carry her. For some reason she believed that if only she could reach that light, she would be safe from these monsters behind her. As they closed in, Kytrnn reached the top of the mountain and reached out with her left hand towards the light, which in turn reached out to her. When they're fingers were so close to touching, a green fire burst from Ky's hand, and the world went dark.
The darkness was all there was for some time, with brief glimpses of light and fleeting dreams. Some of them were just recollections of her life before she was sent to spy on the conclave, but others were more confusing. Some times she would see this wolf, it was always the same wolf, watching her from the shadows. Part of her wanted to be terrified, but another part of her felt no ill will from this creature. It seemed like it was only there to observe her, her thoughts and her dreams. She would forget with every new dream, but then it would come back to her. Eventually the bits of light became glimpses of the world; blue eyes, elven ears, the smell of a poultice or potion. Was she back home in the free marches? Was it all over?
Bits of conversation would come through some times; threatening whispers, confused musings, intrigued comments. "You better get me results", "She seems to be getting better", and "Any day now" seemed to be the ones that stuck the most among the confusion. Her dreams were her safe place, she didn't want to recall what happened-- it seemed like either her mind was rejecting the events or the memories simply weren't there anymore. She hid among the fade, among the moments that weren't real, the wolf her only constant companion-- even if she forgot it every time it left her sight. After a while, she found she was no longer scared of it, and when she was getting comfortable around it... it vanished. No longer was it in her dreams; the memory clung to the wolf for a few dreams before it was forgotten completely.
The pain is what awoke her at first, it felt like someone stabbing her in the hand multiple times. If it weren't for the smell of musk and water on rocks, she could almost believe she was at home and whatever she saw was a bad dream. The pain came in waves, and each wave that crashed down on her, woke her just a bit more. After a while she was finally able to open her eyes, her strength had disappeared like that one time she caught a bad fever at home and had been bedridden for weeks. When her eyes finally fluttered open, she saw that she was surrounded by guards that were pointing swords at her; oh gods, what had she done?
Looking down, Kytrnn saw that her wrists were shackled. She wondered what happened, she didn't remember anything before... Oh god the Conclave. The door in front of her slammed open and through the light that nearly blinded her she saw two silhouettes. After a brief moment they stepped out of the light in to the dimness of the cell and she saw them; one was a short haired woman in armor sprouting a symbol she had never seen before, the second was a redhead in a cloak and gown. She didn't recognize either, which only put her more on edge. The female in armor-- armor that somewhat resembled lighter templar armor --more over to her. The anger in her eyes was unmistakable, it was almost as if she'd kill her with looks alone.
"Tell me why we shouldn't kill you now?" She questioned Kytrnn, her eyes narrowing. "The Conclave is destroyed. Everyone who attended is dead... Except for you."
Ky didn't know what to tell this woman, and the other lady didn't seem to offer much help. She just stood there silently watching from the sidelines. They were both on edge, both keeping their guards up as if she'd attack at any moment like a rabid animal. She was used to that reaction from humans, but it felt more serious now-- in this dungeon --with several people pointing swords at her. Panic rose in to her throat, and Kytrnn hesitated for a moment before answering.
"What do you mean everyone's dead?" She managed to choke out, but her words only seemed to anger the dark haired woman more. She reached down, grabbing Kytrnn's wrist and holding her hand up so that she could see it.
"Explain this." The woman demanded, almost baring her teeth with the words. Almost as if the words summoned it, her hands lit up with that same green fire she saw in her dream before the woman shoved her hand back down to the ground. It occurred to her that her dream might not have been a dream after all. The elf stuttered, looking up at the dark-haired woman; her eyes were begging for mercy and filled with confusion.
"I-I.... I-I can't." Once again, her words only added fuel to the fire.
"What do you mean you can't?!" The armor-clad female shouted, gripping her hands in to fists. Ky tried to rush her words out before the woman punched her, or killed her.
"I don't know what it is or how it got there!" The human grabbed the elf by her shirt, hatred and rage burning in her eyes.
"You're lying!" Finally, the other woman intervened, grabbing the dark-haired one by the arm and forcing her back.
"We need her Cassandra." The red-head insisted, putting herself in between Kytrnn and the other woman. It seemed finally that the elf could catch her breath, which was ragged and shaking when it escaped between her lips, bringing tears to the surface of her eyes when it did.
"I can't believe it... All those people... Dead." The redhead looked at her, turning around to face her.
"Do you remember what happened? How this began?" She questioned, keeping eye contact. Kytrnn couldn't meet her gaze, she looked away before answering.
"I remember.. Running." She started, her eyes looking up at Cassandra as the woman made her way back over to her. "Things... were chasing me and then... A woman?" Her words seemed to confuse the redhead, who repeated her words back to her.
"A woman?" Kytrnn thought for a moment before continuing, trying to piece together her thoughts.
"She reached out to me and then..." No more thoughts were coming, everything was blank after that. Cassandra backed the redheaded up, moving her back towards the door.
"Go to the forward camp, Leiliana. I will take her to the rift." The redhead, Leiliana, seemed to agree with this line of thinking and promptly left. Cassandra moved to Kytrnn, kneeling down and removing the restraints on her wrists that tied her to the floor. The woman seemed less angry now, just defensive and withdrawn.
"What did happen?" Ky inquired, looking up at the woman. Cassandra helped the elf to her feet before answering the question.
"It... will be easier to show you." Kytrnn was confused by these words, but still followed the woman as she led her out of the dungeon with her hands still bound. Walking through the Chanty, see saw many wounded and scared people. They had looks of desperation on their faces, and Kytrnn was confused because-- from what she remembered --moments earlier this whole area was filled with hope. Exiting the building, a light in the sky blinded her for a moment. It looked like someone had ripped a hole in the clouds, like an upside drain vortex in to the heavens. The redheaded elf stood there for a moment looking up at the gaping hole in the sky, this had to be a dream.
"We call it the Breach. It's a huge rift in to the realm of demons that grows with every passing hour."
