Morag turned to look back at the new skull-hat Elcca sported when her brother spoke, eyeing the macabre thing. It wasn't unusual for some to wear skulls as decoration, it just wasn't done all that often, at least in the firekin lands. There was something off about it and she had to think for a while before she realized what it was, her steps slowing.

"Oh! I've seen something like that before... its a Baboon." She glanced around, giving another on the ground a bump with a paw. "It looks like a lot of them died here... I didn't know there were troops of them up this way. They're not terribly good hunting, but I've caught one or two in the past."

The idea of maybe using the skulls as disguise was an intriguing one... but she didn't know enough about their enemy to guess how effective it would be.

Aithne was almost relieved as the snake spoke. It appeared as if he got the point and that made her happy. Really happy. She calmed and her tail flicked behind her and she nodded. "Lets go." She said as she started to follow the black creature. They were moving and that was good! She knew that they needed to get as much distance as they could, and yet it really wouldn't surprise her if they stopped again for one reason or another. And yet they did upon the discovery of a skull. And of course the male who was demanding silence a little while ago was now placing a skull upon some one's head. She sneered and shook her head and then she started to move again.

She felt the conversation that Mwako picked up as an appropriate one. I was important but yet at the same time she wasn't even sure if something could be done about half of it. "If they have markings or even some traits we might be a little useless." She paused before remembering the stranger that had appeared in the pride. He technically was a Nergui although born and taken away from the pride it could still be a bit of a hint. "From that one stranger in the pride, he has odd markings. Ones I've never seen before." She thought about all of the firekin in the lands, honestly anything not red, black white or a variation of the three was a little strange but yet Aithne knew that the markings on the male's side was odd.

Baboon? Mwako'damu had never seen such a thing before. The fangs on the skull were enough to give the idea that they could be fierce creatures if provoked. They had to have been cornered, or something The something, he did not want to consider.

"If we had an idea of what the nergui sported, if anything, for adornments on their pelts, we could try to disguise ourselves, even for sheer fact of covering the red on some of our pelts. Though some of us have darker coats, less pronounced or given for any idea of alarm, the red, if seen by any watcher of theirs, or bird, could alert them to our location. But if we are guised as they are, it could throw them off, or at least, if spotted, dismiss any immediate cause for action."

What could they use?

If there were skulls, there could be sun dried pieces of pelt and scrap around, couldn't there?

"If we found any pieces of hide, also, it could even keep the sun off, try to keep us cool as we move on," he suggested.

They needed to make use of whatever they came across, if it could benefit their cause.

"Even marking wise, if we came across any pools of caches of clay, even water and ash, it could dull down the red. We are firekin, it is in our blood, and though we may not want to dull down the exterior of who we are, it could help us in the short term." His mother used paints for the slabs of the firekin history, surely they could use natural supplements to guise themselves.

Serkan looked at Aithne strangely. "One... Stranger? What stranger?" He moved closer to her, confusion in his eyes. "What marking stranger have, not seen before?" The Firekin certainly had a lot of markings HE'D never seen before, so their idea of 'weird marking' was likely different from the Hongshans' idea of 'weird marking.' He then looked around the area. "We find baboons, use pelts, cover backs. That work well enough. Pelts and bones, Nergui wear pelts and bones!" He began digging around, finding various bones. Skulls, at least, were easier to put on - Just situate it on your head, you were good to go. It was the other bones that could prove more challenging. He found the half-buried skeleton of one animal and dug at it, intent on covering... Anybody in particular with the rib cage.

Oh and now they were talking of dress up?

The black snake hissed savagely, sliding through the eye socket of a skull and emerging from the other. He lifted his proud head up, the fanned neck of his species shivering with irritation. This was all a game to them, wasn't it? Would it be a game when they were all dying.

"Look at where we ssstand, foolisssh onesss. Upon a land of death and darknesssss and terror." His tongue flicked rapidly, an angry gleam having come into his eyes now. "Thisss land isss not your home. It isss unfamiliar and cruel. It isss a dark place filled with dark omensss. What doesss it matter what died here? Baboon or lion, dead is dead."

And there was too much chatter and too much silence and the snake left his 'skull' behind to wind across towards Aithne. Oh the omens. The omens.

He never should have come.

Mwako looked around at what was available, there seemed to be plenty of scraps, pieces of, whatever now lay here to rest. He hoped that if anything remained here, spirit or not, they would give them strength in one way or another. Though fallen, that which remained could help keep their own hides alive. This was not a matter of fashion, not shiny objects such as those that some found in the dunes back home. This was a matter of success.

He continued walking, as they needed to make way, needed to cover ground, but kept his eyes peeled for something that perhaps he could splay upon his back, perhaps some scrapped hide to drape over it, keep him cool, and hide the mass of red upon his pelt.

As the snake spoke, Mwako quirked a brow, "dead is dead but can help our success, help us survive. What has passed on here will help us pass through these mountains, and return home," he said simply.

There was something about snakes Mwako found wary.

Perhaps the fact they had no legs...

"If any might have details of markings familiar to the nergui, that we might have use for later, please keep them in the forefront of your mind, as well as any details on what they might adorn as garb. We should keep going, cover ground, but keep cool as we continue."

Kooka poofed out his feathers and let them settle, made a strange noise. "Heat will come like the rise of sun, Kooka knows."

"Then Kooka should keep his eyes open, for anything we might use to cover my back, and cover you as well," Mwako said looking to the bird. The bird nodded, understanding.

"Yes, Kooka knows, Kooka will watch."

In retrospect, Kooka actually wanted to play with the snake...

Thabiti stood silent as he looked over the baboon graveyard they stood upon. It would appear that Morag was correct that a troop inhabited the area before they were slaughtered. His mind gave little option outside of the Nergui to commit such a massacre. Bones were scattered everywhere, it was not as if these primates had died of natural causes, or they'd form a body. The dark Hongshan plucked a skull from the ground, narrowing his eyes at it with disdain. Among the group, he was one of the few that had been in the Nergui's company the longest. The memories were haunting, inspiring vengeful notions.

The little black cobra was right, this place was of death. He nodded as it hissed. The place was rancid with decay and the texture under his paws were... unsettling to say the least. As a predator, bones were a natural thing, but this place did not seem to feel as such. The less time they spent here, the better. But even so, going onward is but walking closer to death.

"Nergui not all like Fire kin. Different colors. Different markings." Thabiti turned to the group, noting each present. They all shared similar colors, similar markings. They were related distantly or immediate. If anything, it would appear he and Serkan, as well as the snakes and birds, were those unrelated. "You all look like Fia and," turning toward Nyimak, "Nyimak. Pretend we are family to Nergui."

It was an idea. They all resembled one another quite a bit, and those who didn't could be the blacksheeps of the family. He wasn't entirely familiar if Nergui had distant tribes, but it was a shot. If they came across any birds, perhaps a convincing story would need to be in the works.

"Nergui are different color, markings. Nergui wear skulls, bones, and pelts. Nergui are savage and dangerous .... monsters." Thabiti placed the skull on his head with a scowl, picking up a piece of scrap hide, tossing it over his neck. "We be monsters too."

The Hongshan that poke seemed to know much about the nergui. For a moment, Mwako'damu wished to press more questions, he wanted to know how much this Hongshan knew. But Mwako also knew this was not the time. Kooka pecked at Mwako's shoulder and went silver eyes fell on the bird, the bird pointed to a dark piece of scrap pelt near stones and pieces of chipped bones.

He grasped it and tossed it upon his back. Kooka removed himself from his settled position to try and manuver thin pieces around and under Mwako's mane to that it would be somewhat strung there as to not fall as he walked. Kooka also made sure it would be lose enough as to not irritate, and to leave room for him to hide underneath.

"Thank you, Kooka."

"I help others, too, if they wish it, I good with claw talons," Kooka said, then retreating to Mwako's shoulder once more. Mwako hoped all had heard Kooka's invitation, Mwako would lend the bird's talents with no hesitation.

With the idea of being distant family, it could be true. That, or perhaps they could state they have relation to the firekin that had been disbanded long ago, when his mother had come to join during that inner war. No, Mwako thought it best to leave that past behind them.

Mentioning, monsters, Mwako shook his head at Thabiti, and offered a smile, "No, we will not be monsters," he stated, "we are going to stop them," in time, of course. "This will be our ruse, a facade, nothing more."

For once, Elcca didn't look amused. She shook the skull off her head, and let it clatter to the ground with a smack. A crack appeared. "Skulls are bad luck," she said quite simply, as if this was something known to everyone. "Too much life energy. If you all want to look like crazy people, then fine. I don't wear bones."

She made a fairly good show of sticking her nose in the air and stepping over the rest of the baboon remains. Maybe she'd have to warm up to the snake fellow after all. These firekin clearly didn't understand that certain things had bad properties!

And maybe she was just a tad vain.

Yoan, on the other hand, took to the idea. The crow dislodged himself from Elcca's shoulder, but kept himself low to the ground as he poked around the animal's remains. "Many creatures probably die in these mountains. The Nergui will have skattered or made use of anything like this. If we want to make disguises, it would be best we look here."

"The Nergui like bright markings and strange designs- but the normal ones, they just cover their pelts with whatever crude things they can find. A group of bright red lions may not be able to pass as nergui, but you can at least try to conceal yourselves from a distance," the crow started.

"I'd think you of all people would know those things are bad luck," Elcca muttered.

Yoan blinked his bright eyes. "Practicality outweighs bad luck. I say we take a moment and see if we can find anything among the rocks."

arrow Lots of animals come through the desert, looking for shelter. Unfortunately the mountains offer little. Good thing for us though, we might as well look around!

The black lioness frowned at the dark negativity being thrown about over these remains and the sudden scrabble to find disguises among the pieces.

"The Firekin do not place must stock in omens or luck." She said quietly. "There is only the strength of your back and the sharpness of your claws and mind. We do not openly worship gods or spirits or anything of the sort... Were this a place where lions had died, perhaps it would be different, but to us... this is simple the scattered bones of prey."

Lifting a paw, Morag back-handed one of the skulls idly to watch it roll away, clattering over the other bones... but it was not the sound that made her start, it was the huge rat that had been hiding beneath it. It was probably the largest such of its kind she had ever seen and it took her a moment of staring at it before she could even think of how to react to it. Should she catch it? Kill it? Let it go?

Well that made some sense. If they were trying to sneak up on the Nergui, it would help to look like them. For once he was glad of his slightly different fur. Sure, he had red, but he had lots of white too. No one else here was as pale as him. Maybe he could find some scraps of skin or hide to toss over his back in place of his red cape, which he'd left behind. That would hide some of the red too.

He spent a few brief moments scuffing about through the rocks, keeping an eye on the others. Probably they would not want to delay too long, and he would be content to continue empty-paw'd. As he shifted a rock though something caught his eye. A glint of something not quite the same as the stone around it. An odd shape. Gingerly reaching between the stones, he fished out a small disc of hard material, coated in grit and dirt and sand. Deciding it was harmless, he licked it over, spitting briefly to remove the grit from his tongue. A now-shiny gold coin glinted up from his paw at him.

That was something! It matched the golden cuffs he kept his cape on with, and that made him smile. As for making a disguise though, it was pitiful. It would barely cover one of his eyes, let alone any markings. Still, he didn't quite want to leave it behind. While the others searched, he fumbled to twist some long grasses around it, securing it to a strand of his mane, so that it hung down over his forehead. He'd discover later on the trip that it would bounce annoyingly, occasionally even whacking him in the face. For now though, he was mightily pleased with the...whatever the thing he'd found was.

Mwako'damu watched as some had begun gathering items to try and make themselves more...rogue-like, more nergui. It was a strange thought. Would this truly be the garb they would wear if among them? Kooka seemed content hiding beneath that pelt found earlier, and it made no different to the male lion whether the bird stayed beneath it or not. Kooka had been very useful indeed.

Kooka, on the other hand, was peeking out through some holes in the pelt, and when he saw something shiny, his head poked out from underneath the pelt. He watched as the male lion strung it around his head, having the shiny thing on his forehead. Kooka poked Mwako, "find one for me."

Mwako quirked a brow.

"A shiny, find me a shiny, so I not take."

"You will not take anyway...and maybe another time Kooka, but if you see one no one else has gathered, it can be yours, you've done well so far."

He hoped the bird would continue to do well, and not fail him..them.

Kooka huffed and disappeared beneath the pelt again, disappointed. He liked things too!

To that, Elcca simply shook her head. She was well aware of the less open minded nature of the firekin. To Yoan, it had been the whole reason he'd wanted to come to this place. To get away from all the things that she inevitably got them in trouble with. But it would be hard to break the seeress. She knew omens when she saw them, and bad luck was sure to follow it.

...but not entirely wanting to be left out either, she started to search around the rocks and alcoves. Any bones were hastily kicked aside. There were other properties in the world that could be manipulated to their favor, should they find them.

"See, bad luck," Elcca said flatly as Morag discovered the giant rat. As if that was all the proof in the world she needed.

Another stone pushed aside, and she noticed a glint. It was another coin, mirroring the one Saoi had found. It was pretty, but she had plenty of baubles back home. She let it roll away in disinterest.

As it rolled across the ground, Yoan landed and picked it up in his bill. He hopped over towards Mwako and Kooka, and dropped it in front of them. "There you go," he said pleasantly.

This was an interesting little place they had come upon. Azulon looked around at all the bones and... other things with some curiosity. It was quite a lot of little animals bones in one place, practically a miniature graveyard. He frowned slightly at the suggestion of finding a disguise item, and glanced at his own fur. He was red, indeed, but a dark shade. Azulon didn't feel he really needed a disguise, if the intent was only to be less suspicious from a distance. He also had a few peculiar markings the nergui might enjoy.

But he appreciated a bit of distraction, and idly looked around for any item. He found an antelope horn and picked it up, pondering over it for a few moments. Ultimately Azulon decided it had no real use for him, and tossed it away, listening to the sound as it bounced off rocks. With a curt shrug to show his disinterest in looking for anything else, he decided to simply wait while the others did as they wished.

-

Hrafn had been hoping to find a few scraps somewhere nice and quiet, which is what led him back here. He remembered that there had been many dead animals around here from when the Nergui had come through, and figured it was as good a place as any to look. Sure, he could nab some scraps from a lion, but he just wasn't in the mood to deal with them this early in the morning.

So he'd made the flight over here, relishing in the loneliness for a bit. Sometimes Hrafn just preferred to fly solo, and, in fact, had begun flying this way the afternoon before, though this location hadn't initially been a target. But from rather far off, he could tell something was strange. What were all these lions doing here? Oh, how very interesting. Plenty of red in this bunch. Were these the firekin, then? He flew closer, not quite bothering to be stealthy as he landed on a nearby rock, enough distance between himself and the lions to get away, should he need to. The large raven cawed loudly, just to see if anyone would react.
