Nolan turned the pokeball over in his fingers, realizing too late that he didn't even ask what type of Fire pokemon it was. Gage was gone when he thought to actually say something. Well, that was odd, but remembering about that shiny Blitzle and what Chael said about shiny pokemon, it wasn't a big deal to him to trade a pokemon that was a funny color. He didn't really want the Trapinch anyway, and SOMETHING was in this pokeball. But priorities. Nolan added the Litwick's pokeball to his messenger bag, and after the rest of his pokemon were healed up he switched out his team back to what he was most comfortable with. He hurried. He didn't want to make things even worse with his 'mentor', that is, if the Ranger didn't already think he was completely hopeless. It wasn't much later that Nolan sheepishly showed up again. By now the Sandstorm had died down, and Nolan's bandanna was back around his head. He kept his eyes on the ground, shuffling over to Des. Nolan rubbed his arm, looking exactly like a kid who was just scolded for staying out too late. "Sorry. I guess this means I forfeited that match. You're really good at battling, and I'm still hoping you'll teach me some more. Do you think I stand a chance with the next gym?" Des watched as Gage went after the Luxio. After a little bit, he headed back to town to heal up his team before going back out into the desert. And then, something appeared. Or rather, some things. Out came a Sandile, an Aron, and a... Well, ********. A Solosis. This was not good. Not good at all. That Psychic would have to be the first to die. And it was a three on three, it seemed. He would one-up that and use a single Pokemon. He needed some raw power, and what better choice than... "Jaws, get rid of that Solosis before it can use any Psypowers!" he said quickly, hopping back a couple of feet as he released the Sharpedo. It was strange to see a Water-type out in the desert. Even more so that some Water-types could levitate above the ground like that. But what would stop the shark from using the sand like it was water? A shark was one thing, but one was ******** if they came across a land shark. So it was particularly terrifying for the three Wild Pokemon to suddenly become two when the Sharpedo leapt from under the sand, sinking his teeth into the Solosis and dragging it under. It certainly wasn't going to come back from that, that was certain. And of course, now that the Sharpedo knew Aqua Jet, nothing was safe anymore from his reach as he chased after the other two Pokemon before sinking his icy fangs into them or slamming into them with the Aqua Jet. They had essentially become lunch for the ravenous shark. Des called back the Dark/Water type before Nolan returned, thankfully missing out on the carnage. "I have years of experience, so don't worry about losing to me. My skill's on par with the 8th gym, or even the Elite Four if levels weren't an issue. You should be fine against the next gym, but if you're still unsure if you're capable of beating the second gym, we can find some Aron for you to practice on." 42 18

Breathing a small sigh of relief, Nolan could finally meet the Ranger's eye again after hearing what he had to say. "I usually don't get mad like that, but ... I didn't like watching my pokemon get hurt ... and ..." He closed his mouth with a snap, grim while he tried to find better words instead of making his excuses. Nolan's parents always said he had to grow up someday, and making excuses was something kids do. "You ARE really good. I just didn't realize how good until you battled me. I've only battled against other rookies like me up to this point. But I think I should be okay for the gym, that guy Gage traded me a Fire type that's about the same level as the rest of my pokemon." Nolan paused, and changed his mind on the fly. "Some more practice would be good though. I found a group of Aron earlier and caught one, so I bet we could find them again with some iron as bait." Des nodded. Yeah he could understand that. Of course, that was what sensitive people thought. If there was no pain, there was no gain. But whatever. The kid managed to shut up before he made up any more excuses and then said that Des was really good, emphasizing the fact. The fact that Gage traded something to him wasn't all that surprising, as it looked like he wanted the boy's Pokemon anyway and wasn't all too keen on having certain Pokemon. "What did he trade you?" Des asked. Hearing Nolan agree to go hunt some Aron sounded good, and even recommended using some iron as bait. "It'll be hard to find iron out here unless we take some from the fort. Fortunately, I have some Metal Coats I was meaning to exchange back in Blyse City. I think we can use one to draw a bunch near, though I rather not lose it." 43 19

Nolan bowed his head slightly and fumbled around to find the traded pokemon's pokeball from his bag. When he brought up its information to get Litwick's name, he glanced over the typing, stopped, and then felt his skin go cold and clammy as he paled. This Litwick wasn't just Fire, it was a Ghost type too. "Um, you know what? It's not important. I'll use my own pokemon against the gym. I bet we'll do really great!" Nolan laughed nervously, and to cover for it, he dug back into his bag again, pulling out that bit of iron that the Aron he captured had. "No need to use your Steel Coat. This was what they were all chomping on before out in the desert. It must have come from the Fort or something." Turning the scrap metal in his hands, he noted the bite marks and promised himself not to put his fingers anywhere near his Aron's mouth. "I think Torkoal has had enough practice. I think Dosu should be learning Dragon Rage pretty soon. That one will put a dent in some Steel types, I've heard." Yup, despite his obvious inexperience with battling and other pokemon moves, types, and abilities, Nolan knew all about his Gyarados. He'd been obsessing about them for most his life. Post 240 "Steel resists Dragon moves." Chael said as he walked to the two. "The leader was admbsent like the previous." He shrugged. Behind him was four Pokemon. A Gurdurr, Golett, and two Eevees. But Nolan would probably guess who the second was, by the way the other one stood. Tsuki was playful while the second was more aggressive and had a scowl on his face. "So I'll just train my lower level team members." he guessed. He didn't want Argos or Fear being disobedient so he put them in the Pc. "I see..." was all Des said about the matter. He'd have a word with Gage about that later. Nolan said he would use the iron ore that his Aron was nomming on as bait instead. Which was good since he didn't want to risk losing an item to trade for items in Blyse. He also said that his Gyarados would be learning Dragon Rage soon, and then Chael returned and incorrectly stated something that needed to be fixed before adding that the leader was absent like the last one. "Hrmph. You can't trust the League at all." said Des with a shrug. "And correction: Steel resists all Dragon-type moves, excluding Dragon Rage. Dragon Rage deals fixed damage regardless of type. So you can still use that attack." But Chael had already left, apparently getting a message about the Gym Leader returning. He turned to look at Nolan. "Well, let's get started with baiting the Aron then." 44 20

"But Dragon Rage does ..." Nolan didn't get a chance to finish his thought, 'fixed damage'. Besides Des explained it much better than he would. "Looking on the bright side," He said, glancing to the Ranger once Chael hurried off, "At least it was much less of a wait. I was sitting in the first gym for several hours while I was waiting for the substitute. I wonder what's been going on." Nolan got out the scrap metal and started walking with the Ranger to find a good place to bait the Aron for practice battles. It wasn't quite Nolan's idea of training, yet he did trust his elder's judgement for battle advice against Steel types. "Um, so why do you not like the League anyway? They can't all be bad." It was Nolan's bad attempt at small talk, but he was curious as well. He found it hard to believe that the entire League was corrupt with power and lawlessness. If that was the fact, wouldn't more people know about it? Kanto was just fine, well, once Team Rocket was kicked out his parents told him. "Is it because of your face?" He meant the burns, only catching glimpses, but Nolan had noticed by now that Des must had gone through something painful in the past. Sometimes he was too observant for his own good. "They probably forgot to give the Leaders the memo about the new shipment of Trainers. Either that or most of them are morons that can't even look after their own town, let alone gym. Blyse's previous gym leader had his city under attack because the eighth gym leader sucks at controlling some of his dragons. Fortunately, they managed to subdue the dragons with Perish Song. I don't know what the reason was for the initial attack, though." said Des with a shrug. "Some gym leaders do wander, after all. I know I saw the eighth gym leader wandering around near Blyse earlier." Nolan then asked about his dislike of the League. "Being a League member requires you to carry some responsibility. However, none of the League members in this region are responsible at all. They're supposed to take care of their city and the routes around the area, and any other area they're in charge of, like Blyse's Gym Leader and the Ruins. However, Trainers still break into the Ruins and ride the Train without the proper badges, the Gym Leaders are on routes nowhere near where they're supposed to be watching over, and some of them even attack other cities. They pick fights with Trainers using their non-League team which are significantly stronger than what you're supposed to fight if you fought their gym, and if they somehow managed to lose, they'll make excuses and refuse to give up the badge until you fight them with their actual League team in their gym. If a terrorist attacked one of the cities now, the city would fall into terrorist hands because the Gym Leader that's responsible for it isn't around to fend them off. In some regions, terrorists are Gym Leaders." he said. Nolan thought it was about the burns on his face. His visible eye narrowed on the boy as he paused, then spoke, deciding that he could say a little about it. "That's part of the reason." he said, lightly touching the side of his face with the burn, flinching from the contact. "Watch out for Houndoom's fire. If you get burned, not only will the burns never heal, but they'll hurt eternally. Just a word of advice." 45 21

"I've heard about that. About Houndoom. A small pack of Houndours moved in near Saffron City, and I was warned to never go near them. I never saw any though, but we never went out to Route 7 when I was with my sister." Nolan's brow furrowed a moment as his thoughts moved along on their natural course. He refused to believe that there was some kind of burn that could never be healed, and Nolan caught himself trying to catch another glimpse of the rest of Des's face before he realized he was being rude. Yet if anyone would know about pokemon, and if anyone would have already tried everything, it would be the one with the burns himself. Nolan ended up sighing. As for what he learned of the gym leaders, he had no rebuttal, absolutely believing every word about the League. Still though, he wanted to find at least one gym leader who wasn't completely horrible, if that was possible. "I didn't know the Etura Region was so ... horrible. It's really not like that in Kanto at all. A few gym leaders did leave their gyms, but they always left someone in charge, or they were gone for a good reason." But then Nolan had what he thought was a brilliant idea, "Wait, you said you're as good as the 8th gym leader. Why don't YOU become a gym leader and fix things in the League?" So Nolan was from Kanto. Of course, he already knew all this after looking at the data Regina had gathered from surveying Trainers. Hearing Nolan's suggestion, he shook his head. "Rangers are part of a different branch of the government than the League members. Even if I could fix the problems, I can't because of my position and because we're not supposed to meddle in the other branches affairs." 46 22

Everything Des told him now didn't all add up in Nolan's head. Isn't everyone supposed to work together to fix what was broken? He started again, hesitantly, and he also paused when he thought he saw some Aron already sniffing out the bait. Or at least he caught sight of something shiny heading this way that reminded him of the first time he'd seen Aron. "For what it's worth, I think you would make a great gym leader. You've helped me out ... a whole lot. But then what exactly does a Ranger do, if they're separate from the League?" "This is the government we're talking about. Most of them were Trainers that started their Pokemon journey at 10 and never bothered to go back to school when they finished their journey. So it's full of idiots with about a middle school education when they could have finished it after the journey. Their idea of fixing problems is throwing money and Pokemon at it." said Des, a little irritably as he continued on from earlier after seeing Nolan's expression of confusion. It seemed like he wasn't fond of how the government ran either. Hearing Nolan's compliment got a nod from him, and now Nolan asked about Rangers and what they did. "If a Gym Leader's duties covers cities, Rangers cover the routes and overall wilderness. We take care of any rogue Pokemon that are attacking Trainers, check on Pokemon populations, rescue any missing Trainers or lost and hurt Pokemon in the wilderness and the occasional police work. We're also supposed to put out any fires that threaten to destroy the habitats that Pokemon live in and curb desertification from spreading too far out that it threatens other routes. There's a couple of other duties that are pretty minor, like paperwork and such." he explained. "Looks like a couple of Aron are coming. You ready?" 47 23

"Being a Ranger sounds a lot better than the Pokemon League." Of course he still hadn't forgotten that Des, even if not truthfully, had said he would put in a good word for Nolan to get into a Ranger Academy. Except, Nolan wasn't feeling so very worthy after storming off from a difficult battle, so at least that subject wasn't broached again. Welcoming the distraction, Nolan looked as one Aron made a break from the group, sniffing out the iron first and soon the others had fallen right in line, ignoring the couple of humans hanging out nearby. Nolan already knew which pokemon he wanted to try out, and he chucked the pokeball for Dosu, stopping the charge of Aron cold. "Dosu!" Nolan had to yell as the Gyarados roared. The big sapphire beast arched his neck around, turning his face towards the two trainers, wondering what it was that Nolan wanted. "Can you use Dragon Rage?" Knowing human speech perfectly well from all his time with the Grey family, the Gyarados was comical as it thought deeply on this matter, an 'eyebrow' raising as he tilted his head to one side, and then Dosu nodded. Turning back around, Gyarados took aim at the Aron swarming over the iron, each of them attempting to grab it for their own. And with one huge swipe of his tail, Dosu scattered them to isolate a single Aron. Then he let it rip, mouth gaping open, and the blue dragon's fire erupted from within his mouth. Nolan had to squint his eyes from the bright flame. The wash of strange fire cast over the Aron twice and then the little thing was knocked out, going belly up, glowing a strange purple color before its armor cooled again. "Well, that's effective."
