Without you, the ground thaws, the rain falls, the grass grows.
Without you, the seeds root, the flowers bloom, the children play.
The stars gleam, the poets dream, the eagles fly, without you.
The earth turns, the sun burns, but I die, without you.

It was probably for the best, so she gave him a small nod as he walked away. She looked down when he was gone thought and frowned for a moment. She hadn't meant to offend him or anything, he sounded a bit hurt as he said goodbye. And he called her 'Miss' too. How rude was she! To not even say her name! She needed to have some manners, that was awful. She'd been taught proper etiquette for all these years, to what, now just leave it behind.

She walked quickly, it really wasn't good to run in a dress. She caught up with him, "Oh, Tyson, wait a moment."
then caught her breath for a moment.
She bowed her head a bit, staring at the floor, curtsyed low, the stood back up straight and looked him in the eye.
"I forgot to introduce myself, do excuse me, it's Joyce."
She still didn't smile, she still spoke with a tone of no emotion, but she at least shook his hand, where she hadn't shaken Bobby's or Rose's. She felt a bit in debt for forgetting to introduce herself. Women were a bit lower in status, after all, she was a very traditional girl.
She curtsyed once more, though not as low, then walked away.

Without you, the breeze warms, the girl smiles, the cloud moves.
Without you, the tides change, the boys run, the oceans crash.
The crowds roar, the days soar, the babies cry, without you.
The moon glows, the river flows, but I die, without you.

Tyson turned around when he heard a voice calling for him. He smiled at the speaker and waited patiently for what she had to say. He was surprised at the curtsey because nobody really did that anymore, but it was quite interesting. He was glad she had introduced herself to him and he grinned at her.

Tyson took her hand in her own and shook it saying, "Well it is a pleasure to meet you Joyce. I hope to see you around." His smile lowered for only a moment at the second curtsey but it quickly lifted back up as he went the opposite direction. Joyce seemed a bit old fashioned to him, but not too much so. She was kind and had some personality hidden in her behind a wall of no emotion. He wondered if he could take that wall apart without making a mess.

After leaving Joyce in the library, he had made a slow walking pace towards the courtyard, where he would get some fresh air and a chance to clear his mind. He couldn't stand the idea of not being able to break through Joyce's shell, since he was good at all of that. Wouldn't his father be disappointed? Bryce felt disappointed in himself anyway, so he wouldn't feel as nervous to take his fathers scorn. He would do it, alright, he knew he would. Bryson came out into the court yard, looking up to the night sky and seeing how dark it was tonight. Yep, it looked just like home. He enjoyed the night, it was calming and soothing to him. Maybe it was his vampire senses kicking in, but he also always felt more awake and more alive when he was out there. He took a deep breath, enjoying the air, something that Joyce wouldn't be able to enjoy when she got out here. She was 'freshening up' which he hoped meant she was going to go loosen her corset. How sneaky was she if she actually did go to the bathroom to do that exact thing? The sneaky act actually made him laugh a little out loud. Bryson took a seat in the grass, feeling that it was luckily dry enough for him to sit on without ruining his robes. His father would pay for a new one if he had to, but it wasn't as if the Patel's were rich. Just because his dad was powerful and could get anything he wanted done completed did not mean that the vampires had money. No, they were not poor, but they were no where near rich either. A small two bedroom house is where they lived, and it was located in the middle of nowhere. That was so Lucifer could easily contact and get to his vampire associates. God, Bryson missed home.

Without you, the seeds root, the flowers bloom, the children play.
The stars gleam, the poets dream, the eagles fly, without you.
The earth turns, the sun burns, but I die, without you.

Joyce walked into the courtyard stiffly as usual, curtsied and sat down next to Bryce, face unreadable.
"Hello, Mister Bryce." She said as she bowed her head.
She had the slightest of red circles under her eyes from when she teared up in the bathroom. Not because she had cried, she hadn't done that in a very long time...but because it contrasted so much against her still-pale skin. It hadn't been flushed with life for the longest time, so even if not a tear fell, even if her eyes had only been slightly watery, the red circles might as well have been neon.

Her corset was two inches looser, so she had a...what, 17 or 18 inch waist now instead of the 15 inch one she was accustomed to. She'd wear it tighter with one of her tighter dresses, but she had made this floaty, puffy dress all on her own, she wanted to wear it how she pleased. She adjusted her bonnet a little bit, it had been creating a red line underneath her chin. Why must a lady's clothes be so tight?
But she wasn't really thinking about that right now.
Her mind dwelled on Lily in the bathroom doing her imaginary curtsy. Her laughter had rung throughout the tiny bathroom and echoed on the damp walls like a hundred girls laughing at once. She didn't doubt that a hundred would laugh at the sight of her. Perhaps she should leave Hogwarts...perhaps it wasn't right for her. She didn't want to have to wait for these people to like her.
If she didn't know better, she'd ask for a hug right now.

Without you, the breeze warms, the girl smiles, the cloud moves.
Without you, the tides change, the boys run, the oceans crash.
The crowds roar, the days soar, the babies cry, without you.
The moon glows, the river flows, but I die, without you.

Bryce had noticed when Joyce had walked out into the courtyard. Her style of walking was very easily spotted, so he couldn't help but feel a little strange when she sat next to him. It was a bit dark, but the torches lit up her face enough for him to study her features. He wasn't very keen on the way she sat either, very uncomfortably, or for him it would be that way. He noticed that under her eyes, they were slightly more raw than usual. It was as if she had teared up. She had seen that sign from his mother, and he had seen it quite frequently. What in the world could have made her cry? "Well, hello to you too." He wasn't sure if he should say something or not, but he didn't think that he needed to mention it. He did notice, on the other hand, that her breathing wasn't nearly as stiff as before, and her hair was just slightly looser. He could pick up on the slightest details of human image. Ask him to pick out a person he had seen once in a crowd of people he didn't know, he could do it with out hesitation. Ask him to tell you how big or small someones nose was, or how strangely their ears look, and he could tell you. If you asked him, on the other hand, to go through a maze after being shown exactly how to do it just hours or even minutes before, he wouldn't be able to do it. His memory was only good on people, faces, and actions. "That must have been some bathroom break."

Bryson didn't bother to elaborate more, but he did decide to stop looking at her face, and study the sky. He loved the way it looked, he was always intrigued by the stars and everything up in the sky at night. He would live like a normal vampire if he could, if he wasn't part wizard as well. "Do you enjoy the night time? Or no?" he asked, glancing at her for a mere moment, wondering exactly where she was looking this time. It wasn't like they were facing each other, so it would be awkward for her to attempt at looking over his shoulder. But, rather, they were sitting next to each other, outside, in the grass. For a moment, he was surprised to think that she would take a seat in the grass with him. Wouldn't it possibly ruin her dress? She probably had tons more where that came from. But, the other thing he didn't think about was the way that people from that day and age used to live. They didn't own many of those dresses. Bryce didn't want to feel responsible for ruining her dress, although it really wouldn't have been his fault in the first place. He shrugged the thought off, continuing to stare mindlessly into the sky, lost in its wonder.

Joyce said nothing. Had he noticed the redness under her eyes? Even though it was fading, he probably did. When he looked away, she rubbed under her eyes a little bit and smoothed out her dress. It was probably going to get grass stains, but she was supposed to do what the male asked, basically, and it would be rude of her to be standing when he was sitting.

Did she like the night? Of course. When she was little, her and Rosebud used to stare up at the stars, they had nothing better to do. They weren't allowed to learn the names of all the constellations, that was useless knowledge, so they had made up names on their own. One cluster of stars had looked like a Rose, and a brightly shining star was in the center of the Rose.
She only found out much later that that 'brightly shining star' was the North star.
She looked up at the sky. There were too many torches and lights on near the castle. She couldn't see all the stars, and some had surely burst since then. When she looked up at the sky at the North star, she couldn't make out the Rosebud she used to be able to see around it. She was a child, her and her sister had probably just made it up, were searching for their names in the sky. It made them feel more significant. Like they mattered more. Like they weren't just specks in the universe living their life according to some rules laid out hundreds of years ago.
"Yes. That's the Rose constellation." She said, pointing with a white gloves hand at the North star.
"You can't see it here." She spoke, for once in her life, with a note of emotion. Though she was talking about stars, you could tell that it was more than that to her.
You can't see it anymore at all. It's gone. Just like her.
She found herself tearing up again, but Bryce was luckily looking to where she had just pointed.
"Forgive me for the useless comment." She said.
For that one moment, a flicker of the deepest sadness and memories had crossed her face. But now she was melacnholy, back to the mundane. Why did she...feel all of a sudden? Contain your emotions Joyce, stop it.

So she did.

Bryce kept his eyes in the sky, letting the moments of silence pass between the two of them. He didn't mind silence, although the silence that came from Joyce was almost too frightening sometimes. Her breathing was so quiet that he could hardly hear it. It was times like these that he wished he had his fathers sense of hearing, but it wasn't ever going to be possible, so he didn't waist his time dreaming. Not about that, anyway. He liked to dream about the places he had been with his father, especially back to the vampire villages. His mother threatened his father sometimes, but Lucifer always won, saying he was the vampire. The ministry had a hard time controlling him, although they had no trouble controlling his mother. Natalie was a pain anyway. When Joyce responded, he watched her arm point upward towards the sky, stating that where the north star was happened to be where the Rose constellation was as well. He tried not to laugh, and he covered it with a cough faced away from Joyce and into the crook of his elbow to be more proper than usual. She also said what she had said with a bit of emotion to her voice, and that intrigued him. He would try to keep her talking about stars. Maybe that would help him with his goal. "The Rose constellation, huh? Hmm. That's strange. Most of the northern hemisphere calls it the North Star, which is connected with the Little Dipper and the Big Dipper. But, they could be wrong. You never know." Bryson smiled, not bothering to look at her.

She asked for forgiveness yet again, and he blinked a little, hearing something in her voice that he didn't think he would ever hear. It sounded painful, and he actually didn't want to know. Bryce contemplated looking at her, and by the time he decided to look down at her face, she was back to her gloomy, regular self. "Nothing spoken can be useless. If you, of all people, have something to say, I don't think it could ever be useless." Bryce meant that in sincerity, since he knew how little Joyce seemed to enjoy speaking. He knew it wasn't proper and all that junk, but it just bothered him that she thought what she was saying was useless. She wouldn't say anything at all if she didn't have to, and when she did, it was either worth listening to, or it was helpful for her. She didn't speak nonsense, although her lack of knowledge on stars could be seen as worthless. His mind was lost, but he shook it off easily in the air of the outdoors. It kept him calm and awake when he was outside. It was like his own natural high.

Joyce listened to him and let silence fall between them again. The silence and tension was nearly palpable.
She couldn't take it.
"They are wrong." She said after a time.
When he looked at her, she knew.
Because she was looking straight into his eyes, and there was something in her own. A certain...feeling. It took her a moment to realize it was pain. Hurt. Sadness. Why was she looking him in the eyes? She didn't know why, but she couldn't stop.
"They are wrong." Oh dear God, she was repeating herself too. "It's the Rosebud."

She shook her head, stood up, and curtsied low, very low.
"Forgive me. Good evening, Bryce."
She walked away as she usually did, now a lot on her mind. Her face was back to normal at least, expressionless. But she had almost, almost, showed enough emotion to be...well...normal, back there.
But now she knew what color his eyes were.

They were black.

Bryce was taken by surprise with her tone of voice. One, it wasn't a dead voice, and two, it was cold and emotional. It was completely different than the voice he was used to hearing. He looked to see what was going on, and wondering if she had any sort of emotion on her face, or if he maybe had been hearing things, although that was very unlikely. The surprise kept coming, though, as he, for the first time, had looked Joyce in the eyes, and he could, unwillingly, see the pain that usually hid behind her eyes. So stars had an emotional connection for her, huh? That was actually rather surprising for him, and he couldn't seem to let this slip through his mind. It was stuck, there and he probably wouldn't forget the way her eyes looked.

Bryce watched her get up and curtsy much, much lower than she normally would have. Her voice when she spoke almost back to normal again, but he could hear the pain inside of it just enough to know that it really was something that was bothering her. Her departure left no room for him to speak. Who wouldn't have been caught off guard to hear someone like Joyce spill into an emotional wave like that? If he had the chance, he would have looked into her eyes longer, studying them more. But, he knew enough now to know that she was capable of breaking her silly force field down to let the real world in. He wondered vaguely if her family had any hands in what she had been doing, and it wouldn't have surprised him if they did have something to do with it.

After a few moments of peace, Bryce got up and brushed off his pants, finding his eyes still staring at the stars above. "Rosebud, huh?" He couldn't help but think that Rosebud had more than just a silly name meaning to Joyce, and he sure wasn't going to let this all slide. Nope, he would have to break further into her head to figure that one out. He would do it soon, hopefully. He was feeling better knowing that he could control this girl to some extent.

A laugh escaped Bryce's lips. It wasn't a happy laugh, it wasn't even an evil laugh. It was just a laugh, one that would sink into someones soul and terrorize it, bringing painful and antagonizing memories back. The laugh was so strange that Bryce couldn't stop, and it was as if he was being controlled, forced by some mysterious puppet hand to act the way he was laughing.

Something inside him was taking over.

Joyce's eyes were a bit wider, but other than that, there was nothing new about her. She hadn't been getting lots of sleep. She kept dreaming about a corset choking her so she couldn't breath, couldn't scream she was alive, and Bryce and Rosebud would bury her as her mother took pictures in teh backround. Rosebud would sew her mouth closed and...
Joyce shuddered a bit.
She put the Look on. Her mouth closed, teeth apart, eyes half-closed, face straight. She sat down on the grass in the courtyard, which was probably a mistake. She was wearing a very nicedress today, but to be honest, she had a fair amount of very nice long dresses. And she could always sew more. She was good at sewing...she had to be.

She just sat there, silent, staring up at the stars. They twinkled and glittered as they appeared in the night sky. Because it was winter, night came faster. She only wished they were a bit clearer here. No. No she didn't. Stop wishing for things you do not need, Joyce. She took a breath. Not a deep breath, she was wearing too tight a corset. It was the same one, she didn't have a lot of spare corsets, and she had it tightened nearly all the way to fit with this dress. She had it in between what she had on Friday. It was not at 17 inches, but not yet her goal of 15. It was probably 16 right about now. She smoothed out the silky yellow material and glanced around for a moment. No one. Good.

She took her white silky bonnet off for a moment and held it in her hands. She let her black hair, almost as silky as the dress, catch in the wind and fly out behind her. The wind in her hair almost made her smile. Almost, not quite.

He had made his way from the bottom of the old and sturdy castle where the dungeons had been, up to breath the fresh air outside in the court yard. Or, at least, that was where he was heading. Bryce moved slowly as he always did, watching as a few people passed by him, either staring or speaking with someone they were accompanied by. He didn't really care for much social interaction, unless he was gaining something out of it. With Rhiannon, he was gaining knowledge that would help him reach invincibility at the school. If he could gain control over her, there was no telling what Bryce could to. He would have a long way to go though, so he had to keep his cool about these things. With Joyce, though, the only thing he was gaining was the satisfaction that he knew he could control someone with stubborn and ridiculous morals. He was still working on that one, though.

As he approached the courtyard, he could already feel the energy the night was giving him. He was naturally nocturnal, which had already given him an edge over Rhi. Plus the fact that she let something silly like love effect her. Oh, how much fun the boy would have with that knowledge. His father especially would like to see how a death eaters child could fall so easily in the traps of the human emotions. He loved every bit of that information. He came out to the courtyard, and the first thing his eyes gravitated towards was a figure sitting in the grass, a long silky dress on, and... loose, bonnet-free hair? Ohh, he would have to have some fun with this. He made sure to step quietly, which was not an issue because Vampires were masters of secrecy and masters of the ability to sneak around. He tip-toed quietly, looking over her silky and dark hair that waved so gently in the wind. He very slowly reached down, and... snatched up her bonnet!

Bryce took a giant step back to get away from her, since he didn't want Joyce to snatch the bonnet back from him. He very quickly stuffed it in his robe pocket, coming around to the front side of her and sitting down to face her. Of course, she wasn't looking at him, and of course, that irritated him like always. Bryce had a smirk on his face, and he felt accomplished today. "See? Nothing bad happens when you are in the presence of a male and don't have your bonnet on. Plain and simple." He kept his eyes on her face, wondering what she would do next. He figured she would ask for the bonnet back, or do something to get it back, since he really shouldn't have taken it from her in the first place. Oh, this game would be fun.

Joyce was just sitting there, watching the North star. Rosebud wasn't showing itself tonight. She never did anymore...WHAT?
Her bonnet was snatched from her loose hand and she turned around quickly, face still like a statue. She should've known. Bryce. There was no point in asking for it back, it was in his pocket. He wasn't about to hand it over so easily.
"Accio Bonnet!" She said calmly to the night. The bonnet soared out of Bryce's pokcet. She grabbed it and tied it deftly around her head in a matter of seconds. People have been doing that to her for ages, Bryce needed to think of a new trick.
But then the shock of what she'd just done ran through her. She had raised her wand to a man, hadn't said good evening, not to mention the many things she'd said Friday night.

She curtsied her lowest curtsy yet so that her knees were actually skimming the grass. Her head was bent so low that the back of her neck was completely exposed to Bryce. The bonnet she'd roughly pressed on her head fell forward just a little bit so that the edge of it was directly above her downcast eyes.
"Please forgive me, Mister Bryce." She said, knees starting to shake a little from the position.
"I have wronged you by lifting my wand to you, for speaking so casually and personally Friday, looking you in the eyes, and even now I do not hold my tongue. I willingly accept any punishment you see fit."
She held the position, which was getting increasingly difficult to do. She knew she'd fall over if he slapped her, which was what she was expecting. Something physical, something to that effect was the usual.

Bryce had half expected what had happened to happen, but it took him a moment to fully understand the situation. Joyce had just used magic against someone she thought was superior, and took something away from Bryce against his will. Oh no, here came the apologizes and the curtsies. Right on cue, she stood up and then curtsied the lowest she possibly could have, and Bryce wanted her to stop that immediately. He couldn't stand to see her like that, and he really wished he could find a way to break through her shell more easily. But, the thing was, he must have been breaking through little by little. Joyce would have never used her wand against a man, and that just proved his point even more. "God, Joyce, sit down. I forgive you already." he said, hoping that she would take his forgiveness willingly.

A punishment, huh? She was offering him the chance to punish her? Oh, he couldn't pass up this opportunity. He had to think long and hard about this one. He knew she wouldn't break any of her rules, and so changing her clothing or taking the bonnet was out of the question. He had already watched her look into his eyes, and she had already spoken to him personally. Would she answer a question honestly? That seemed like his best bet. Bryce leaned back onto the palms of his hands, looking up to the sky, and keeping his eyes on the brightest star. He knew that it was the North Star, but he still wasn't seeing the Rosebud constellation. He would have to make a trip out to the grounds to do that, or up to the astronomy tower one night. He thought long and hard, and decided on her punishment."Okay, your punishment is you have to answer this question as honestly and as thoughtfully as you possibly can."

Anyone else who received a punishment like that would probably laugh and ask what the question was, but Joyce was not about to speak out of turn. No, she would probably wait until he spoke up again. He cleared his throat and thought the question through his head a few times to make sure that he had it exactly where he wanted it to be. When he did, he asked, "Why do you continue to follow and use these traditions if you know that they are restricting your mind and body the way that they are?" He thought that the question was a legitimate question, and he hoped he would get a real answer from her. He thought for a quick moment, and realized she could get around that question pretty easily. He opened his mouth and said before she could speak "And none of that 'it's proper' thing. I want to know the real reason. You're smart enough to give me a real answer." He was labeling her as smart, because he knew that she was breaking down in her traditions, very slowly, but every time he saw a glimpse of the real her, she was someone he wouldn't mind spending his time with. And, to top that off, he was liking knowing that he was gaining his control every day he spent with her.

Without you, the ground thaws, the rain falls, the grass grows.
Without you, the seeds root, the flowers bloom, the children play.
The stars gleam, the poets dream, the eagles fly, without you.
The earth turns, the sun burns, but I die, without you.

Joyce was suprised, but not shocked enough for it to show on her face. She sat down and looked at the point above Bryce's shoulder. She knew he had black eyes now, so she didn't need to look into them or anything. She really shouldn't have looked at them in the first place. Joyce did not speak a word until he finished asking the question and then added to it.

She didn't even really need to think about the answer. She hadn't been asked this question so directly before, but that didn't mean she wasn't prepared.
"I do not see these traditions in the same light you do, Bryce. You see, as the world is so corrupt and dangerous, we must be unlike the world and follow older and simpler ways. Rather than rely on technology or depend on other people, as a small community, I do not face as many problems as others may. Also, as my parents have raised me this way, it is not my place to question their motives. They have done this to keep me happy, and I am happy."
Her face really said otherwise. She wasn't smiling, after all. She hadn't smiled this entire time she'd been here. She hadn't smiled, in fact, in a very, very long time.

Without you, the breeze warms, the girl smiles, the cloud moves.
Without you, the tides change, the boys run, the oceans crash.
The crowds roar, the days soar, the babies cry, without you.
The moon glows, the river flows, but I die, without you.

Her answer was good, actually, and it kept him on his toes. Who was he to question something like that? The only proof that he had against it was actually himself. Bryce, well, he didn't have many technologies, he didn't rely on people, nor did he have so many problems. But, he wasn't nearly as strict as she was with her beliefs. But, it did surprise him when he heard that her parents raised her way, and she said she was happy. How in the world could the girl be happy? She wasn't smiling, her face didn't glow, she was dull and unanimated. She was depressing to watch, but did she know that? He wondered if he could get away with asking another question, since he obviously got a good enough answer from her.

Bryce thought for a moment before he spoke. Did he want to ask her why she didn't want to question her parents rules? That would make sense to him. He always questioned things to get answers. His father approved of things like that though. He listened to and obeyed his father without question most of the time though, so he was in the same boat as her. It would be hypocritical of him to ask her that question. That was when it came to him. "Joyce... If you're so happy, then why are you really so sad?" Bryce could tell the difference between someone who was happy and someone who was not. She didn't even have a gleam in her eye, or a shred of positive emotion on her face. There was no way she could have possibly been happy.

The wind blew quite hard for a few moments, and at that time, Bryce looked up. The wind blew down the glare from the lit torches around the outside of the courtyard, and for a moment, he could see The North Star and a few other constellations. He looked very hard, but he just couldn't see Rosebud up there. He would find it, though. That would have to be something else he did before he gave up on Joyce, for his own satisfaction. Something about this girl made him feel different, and he wasn't sure what to do about it. He was changing Joyce, but was she actually changing him too?

He would pray to God, if he believed in God, that she wasn't.
