The tunnel ended suddenly, almost as if the building itself was bored and needed a break. Harrison would be able to see Candace and Jerry coming out of the tunnel, covered in small, white feathers. He could also see that there was another tunnel coming up...
Better hurry.

Keep breathing?! Stay there?! "NOT. AHAHA. FUNNY." Despite appearances, Candace truly was not amused.
They were out of the tunnel and she gasped for air, leaning back heavily against Jerry and breathing in as much as she could. Oh god. Her lungs hurt.

Laughter was supposed to be medicine. It was supposed to make you feel better. Something about endorphins or something-
Jerry never thought he'd become terrified of laughter.
But there he was, choking to death with it.
His mind was reeling, just in time to gasp for air for a few brief moments, "C-candace?" He rasped out between panting, "If... if... if... if we survive this... m-maybe we... we could go out for... for coffee some time?" In what was left of the rational part of his mind, this was a very important question.

Candace coughed, spitting out a few feathers stuck on her lips that she had gotten in her mouth.
...What?!
"Jerry, are you insane?" How could he ask her out on a date at a time like this?! Good lord, man! "Ask me...when I can breathe to answer..." Candace groaned, tilting her head back gentler now so as not to hit his head again. It hurt her too, man.

Gay drug-dealing cop hell, he amended, bulldozing past a particularly brutal cluster of needles.
But to be fair, while he had seriously considered a career in drug-dealing, he had never actually gotten around to it.

Candace chuckled. "We're all a little crazy, darlin'." She then took a deep breath to try and regain some semblance of control of her breathing before something bad happened. She didn't want to die of laughter. Die in battle? Sure. That was something one could be somewhat proud of if they went out in a blaze of glory. But laughter? ******** no. She finally sighed and shrugged. "Sure, we can get coffee. It's a date. We'll somehow go out for coffee on an island no one outside of our little part of the world knows of, okay?" She moved a shoulder to nudge him, forcing a grin for Jerry's comfort even if he couldn't see it. "Harrison'll come save us. Just try to stay calm for me a little longer. Oh! You could uh...sing me a son--" And then the tickling resumed. Candace wanted to cry.

Jerry would have been happy to oblige with a comforting, soothing little jingle of some sort.
But the feathers were back.
The song ended up sounding a bit like "AAAAAAARRRGGGAAAHAHAHAAAH"
But in his head amongst the freshly oxygen-deprived swimming, an important fact stood out like a beacon of safety and hope in his brain:
She had said yes.

There was no reprieve from the needles. But then, that was up to him, wasn't it?. He could stop any time. While his partners were murdered, and his shield ticked away...
I'm your partner. They're just who you happened to sign up with outside.
Not on the beat. Circumstances didn't matter. They were working together now. That hadn't been the case during the Test, but it was now, and they had to watch each other's backs, or they'd all end up dead. Whatever was happening to them, they couldn't get to him.
He had to get to them.

He took the steps two at a time, because it meant stepping on less needles. B0nez was grumpier about this situation than he was, because it was B0nez that was getting chipped away at.

He was getting close. So close to the top of the stairs. Just a few more tries, steps and he'd be right there, he could get to them. Could get both of them.
4/5ths, or something like that. Really close. Just a little further. B0nez was holding out okay. He hoped Jerry and Candace were too.

In the home stretch, now. 9/10ths. B0nez was the one railing off fractions in his head, counting stairs like he was counting cards, and Harrison didn't know how much he had in him.
