"Were they skinwalkers?" the stallion asked cringing. "I've had a close and personal encounter with one of those, I wouldn't care to repeat it anytime soon."

"They were once like us," Aydan said slowly. "At least that's what I'm told. I can't really imagine the creature I encountered ever being a soquili - he had glowing eyes of crimson blood and gnashing teeth..." he trailed off and inadvertently glanced at his shoulder and the faint scar only he could make out against the white of his coat. "They're monsters, dangerous ones at that."

“Sounds terrifyin’,” Paelor mused. “Ah can’t even imagine a creature like t’at. An’ yeh said yeh brushed with one? ‘Ow did yeh survive?” He widened his eyes and kept his tone earnest, half hoping to distract the larger stallion from realizing he was weasling his way out of telling the rest of the tale about the sacred shape. That he had made up.

"Barely," he said frowning. "Only made it thanks to my friends. They distracted the creature and afterwards they patched me up. I can't think of a more fear inspiring creature."

“Mmm,” Paelor considered that. “Ah ‘ope Ah never come acrosse one, t’en. Sounds like yeh got some great, friends, t’oug’. Ah can’t imagine anyone doin’ somet’in’ like t’at fer me. Distracting a beastie like that so Ah kin escape, Ah mean.”

"That is very unfortunate," Aydan said gravely. "I don't know what I'd do without Sonja and Velika. Not only do they watch out for me, but we entertain each other, give one another advice, companionship. It would be very lonely to walk this world all by yourself, especially for you, I think," he said regarding the imp.

“Ah suppose so….” Paelor stopped as the rest of what Aydan had said sunk in. “Wait, w’at do yeh mean, especially me?” That was a pretty cruddy thing to say to a complete stranger. Did he give off lonely vibes or something? Because he most certainly wasn’t. Lonely, that was. Not stupid. He loved traveling the lands on his own. If he wanted company, he would have stuck it out with the herd. But no, he had struck out alone because he wanted to be alone. Yup. He didn’t need anyone else. So why the heck did this over grown hairball said that he especially needed someone?

"Because of your love for games," the stallion replied. "Traveling on your own, I imagine partners can sometimes be hard to find and even when you do find them," he continued sheepishly. "Well like me, I bother you about rules and basic game names and I admit, I'm more interested in your story of the sacred mark than the game itself."

Ah, crud. He had to distract Aydan from that story. He’d hoped that it had already been forgotten in the course of the conversation. “Eh, but ‘alf th’ fun of travelin’ is meetin’ new people and learnin’ new games,” he grumped, trying not to seem too desperate as he ignored the comment about the story. “Yeh can’t do t’at if ye’er tied down to a companion. Least ways, Ah never could. Ah prefer bein’ able ta go w’ere ah want, w’en ah want, not w’en someone else wants. Ah ‘ad a ‘erd once, but ah got tired of going w’ere t’ey wanted, w’en t’ey wanted. T’is is muc’ better.”
Paelor could tell Aydan was a family stallion, so he was sure that little speech would distract him.

"I have found traveling to be much more enjoyable in the company of those you have a bond with, but that is only my experience," he regarded the imp curiously. "But I am shocked one as gregarious as you hasn't found others that would want to travel with you."

“Ah, t’at’s th’ trick, ain’t it?” Paelor asked, lightly. “It’s not t’em wantin’ ta travel wit me t’at’s th’ problem. It’s me wantin’ ta travel wit t’em. Ah’m a loner by nature. Ah kin see w’at yeh mean ‘bout you likin’ travelin’ with ot’ers. Some fellas are just ‘erd creatures.” Paelor shrugged a bit, as if he wasn’t overly concerned about the whole affair.

"Well, you're right about that," he agreed. "I am most certainly a herd stallion and speaking of which, if one member of that herd finds out I had a chance to learn a great story from another land and I failed to do so...well I would be hearing about it for sometime..."

“It’s really not t’at great a story,” Paelor murmured, trying to remember where he’d even left off. “Ah dun even remember where Ah stopped,” he said, deciding to be honest about that one thing. “Sides, yeh can prolly ‘ear th’ story from any imp like me. T’ey’re all over th’ place and any of ‘em prolly tell the story better t’an Ah do.”

"Aw, but I really was interested in learning how the symbol relates to this game we're playing it," he eyed the pieces warily. "I'm really not that good at remembering how to play games and such, not complex ones like this, at least. A story I might be able to manage in relating it to Sonja, but maybe I could share the game with her too if I knew how it worked with the story. And then you'd have at least one more to play the game with..."
