He gave a sudden frantic whine, lifting it out of the water as the thing sank- weighed down by the simple mechanism he had built. What? NO!! He quickly sat to try to tape up any holes he had made before trying again...

No no no that was all WRONG! The thing had once again sunk. His brain was aching. It all had been pieced together according to the teacher's instructions why did it keep sinking?? Frustrating mounting, he tried once more...

With an infuriated snort, the hunchback ripped the sinking boat from the water before throwing it at the wall. Stupid boats, he hated boats anyway boats were stupid water was stupid who wanted to invent boats anyway? The humans were stupid for needing them at all!
Dejected and feeling the failure, the hunchback left the boat where it lay, trudging to go hide back at his desk again in misery.

For the good of reality, Johan felt it was best he let the conversation between himself and Haddiya hang where it was. Fortunately, the Professor began the class soon after, drenching the students in the first row. Johan was glad he'd chosen his seat near the door, damp though it was. One eyebrow rose skeptically at the mention that the green toad like creatures were related to humans. Apparently, they were from the previous class, which Johan had missed. Though, when the Professor announced what they would be doing this class period, Johan rather thought he'd prefer the toads. Decorating boats? Johan scowled down at his model. You'd think there would be more studying in a class like this! Not arts and crafts. However, since all the other students quickly descended upon their models, and were soon setting their monstrosities afloat, Johan sighed and did so as well. He found a package of clay mixed among the supplies, and despite his protests, soon found himself immersed in crafting a ship. A piece of paper enchanted to a more pleasing color served as the sail, Johan sacrificed the handle to one of his pens as the mast, and finished it off with a proper name. Obviously, the trip to the island had left an impression in his mind regarding ships.

Satisfied with the results, Johan joined the queue at the tub of water. The sorcerer finally noticed his erstwhile hunchback companion was also in the class, and watched as the boil tried to get his model to float. No such luck, apparently. Johan gave his own boat a doubtful look, but stepped forward to place it into the water.

Johan frowned as the boat listed to one side, its 'mast' hitting the water. He pulled it out, and fiddled with the clay decoration on that side, seeing if he could balance it better, before trying again.

Oh, vunderbar. Now it fell on the opposite side! Johan fished it out once more, and again tried to balance the clay decorations. Perhaps they had been a bad idea, he admitted. They were rather heavy. Though, considering what the other students had managed to make float, he thought his boat was rather conservative.
He carefully set the boat back into the water.
Ah, good! The last adjustment had done the trick, for the little boat bobbed serenely upright in the tub of water. Johan nodded in approval, and turned to go back to his seat.

Man, some of these 'boats' were just sad. If Merope's pile of boat shards could float, his certainly would. Altair waited for the others to finish floating their boats, bored out of his mind but at least not engaged, and was almost asleep when his turn to try his boat came up. He stepped forward to set his creation on the surface and give it an encouraging push.
"You've got to be kidding me," he grumbled as his boat promptly drove its nose beneath the surface of the water and started to sink. It was supposed to work on the first try! With a growl he jerked his boat out of the water, adjusting the weight further towards the stern.

After a few more moments of fiddling, the incubus surveyed his handiwork and nodded. It better work this time, piece of junk. Altair set it on the water's surface, holding it protectively, then reluctantly let it go, watching it intently. Float. FLOAT. Ah-- there it was. Abject obedience, just the way he liked it.
Smugly the incubus turned from his successful boat and went to flounce back to his seat.

When the ceiling let lose a spray of water, Jove pulled up his feet with a start. Perhaps not being so tall was okay in this case as it kept his feet from getting wet as the water washed across the floor. He was very proud he didn't squeak. He glanced over the edge of the desk at the soaked and debris-ridden floor for a second with disdain before listening to the discussion. He had realized during the trip that a boat was a good way to travel in the water, but he hadn't realized that humans also travelled in boats, and that it made it super easy to scare them. The little pup's ears perked in attentive curiosity as they were directed to begin building a boat of their own. Looking around, he watched the other students industriously building and testing their creations. They seemed to be having some success, and were enjoying the process a great deal... The pup eyed his own boat, and then given decorations. And decided to bypass the provided supplies almost altogether. He crawled up onto his knees on his chair so he could better work on his masterpiece, pulling items out of his backpack and arranging them inside the boat with great care and precision. Deadman's Eye for the cabin, lantern sprouts for the masts, and ghoulbuttons glaring out angrily over the rail as little people. Finally he took a black marker and drew out the boat's name on the side. Perfect. Now he just had to finish class without another student telling him his boat looked like a rabid snail.

Jove tentatively put his feet down on the wet floor and trotted over to what appeared to be a testing bucket. Would his boat float too? The pup didn't see anything wrong with it, but he set it in the water with great care anyway. He didn't want the mushrooms to fall out.
His ears perked forward, the fluff nearly touching at the tips with the intensity of his focus as he let go of his boat, ready to grab it again if it showed even the slightest inclination to list one way or the other. But it remained steady, sitting placidly upright even when his fingers lost contact with it's hull.
Jove's tail wagged, and after a good couple seconds of his boat floating squarely and uneventfully in the bucket, he snatched it up eagerly. Then he ran back to Yaya to show her his successful boat, glass shards crunching under his feet as he went.

Siddie couldn't see why in the world some of the boats floated. Surely, if some of the stranger ones could float, hers could? She stepped up to the bucket and put her boat carefully down on the surface of the water, holding her breath.
It bobbed twice, then settled down to float serenely. Phew. Following pirate directions seemed to have worked after all.

Oooh, Boats! He liked boats. In one piece and not captained by a Demon of course, but boats. Yes, Boats were in his good books. He stared at the model kit for a while and, after looking at some of the paints, got to work. There was this picture of a Ferryman's boat that used to hang in Aunt Dree's dying room, and since he stared at it quite often as a child, it's image was nice and crisp in his wonderfully eidetic mind.
The paint came first, an ashen grey, followed by the dark lines of age and rot and wear. The Reaper was putting a surprising amount of work into it, but hey, he had to work hard sometime! Just as he set it down to dry before testing it, his hand accidentally knocked over the kit box, and several little things tumbled out of it.
...Macaroni?
... .... .....
Aw, why not? Not only would everyone know it was his, but maybe the dry pasta would soak up some excess water!
Finding the glue, he went on to perfect his 'boat'.

But would it float?

The paint was dry and his turn had come; it was now time to see if his (pun intended) Macaroni boat floated. Bringing it up to the bucket of water, he lowered it in to test it's fate, his tongue peeking out from between his lips as he concentrated. His little boat was going to have every opportunity to float on it's own, damnit! Soon, it was resting in the water, even as far as he could tell...
He slowly let go.
IT WAS FLOATING! WOO! Mac let out a proud whoop, fists flying into the air, and happily moved back to his seat, grinning the entire time. His Macaroni boat was the best boat ever.

With an assignment now placed upon them, Yaya was content to let her conversation with Johan fall to the way side. It looked to her as though he was keen to get started, and she couldn't say she blamed him, it was a fairly interesting task. Beside her, Jove too was hard at work. Lips twitching thoughtfully, she removed her own model from it's box, eying the tiny boat and the accompanying contents. Mast, sail, flags, other odds and ends. She could work with this. Starting work on the main sail, the djinn took a marker to it, tracing hasty swirls and whirls upon the thin fabric in a messy little henna pattern, then carefully set it aside so she could work on the mast, making it curved and twisted on the end. Once it was to her liking, she fixed the little sail to it, and the both were attached to the boat itself and set aside. Her last addition as a lovely swoop end with swirled trim. It was rather simple, but it would have been right at home in the harbors back home. Taking up her marker one last time, she scribbled a little name on the side. "There." It was done.
