[ ZOne is aiming at Theta 2 ]
Well, at least one of the team go to the other side. But now what? She was certain she wasn't going to be going anywhere anytime soon, but what was she going to do with the rock in her hand?
As unknown to her a rock flew in her direction, she glanced at the only person who was close enough to Nine who could do damage to her teammate. Spotting the Theta, she lobbed the rock as hard as she could, hoping to knock him off.
Why?
She needed to protect Z9.

[Throwing to protect Theta 2]
Theta 6 frowned seeing Zeta one rock seemed to be headed for Theta 2. She glared at the other feeling annoyed that her teammate who was so close to the end was being targeted.
She brought her arm back and tossed her rock as hard as she could aiming to knock Zeta 1's rock astray. That was her teammate that Zeta was messing with and that was so not cool.

[ protecting Z1 ]
“I don’t blame you,” Twelve answered, smiling. “If it had been Delta Six, I would have done exactly what you did.” As he spoke, he leaned over to look into the chasm again. He balled one of his hands into a fist as he tried to calm the swell of sadness that rose up in him. Six wasn’t dead. He tried to tell himself that, but he wouldn’t bet on it. His gaze turned downcast and he spotted a large rock. Curiously, Twelve bent down to pick it up. It was a decent size—dangerously big enough to do serious damage if thrown right.
It started with one throw. Then another, and another. Twelve wildly looked from one player to the next. “W-Wait, you guys!” The winner had been decided, so why was everyone flinging rocks at each other? "Uhhh." He had no idea what to do with his rock, but he threw it anyways, hoping that his would knock away Eta Two’s.

[ Theta Two is aiming at anyone Zeta One ]
There was no screaming. That was the first thing on her mind.
There was no screaming, but Bones words echoed in her head like dull aches and open wounds. She'd watched Kirk fall with a heavy heart, felt a bullet rip through her emotions and scar over just as quickly. And then he'd gone too, and it wasn't just a bullet anymore. It was indescribable. The maw of the beast that had bitten and torn into the gut wrenching emotions, swallowed it whole and left her to mechanical movement was ripped apart by this new sensation, this absolute feeling of loss. She didn't need to have her memories to know that this hurt more than any stake to the chest could. She couldn't even feel the shame that came with being passed by Nine. There was a moment of flat lining in her brain, an incurable silence that shocked her to her bones and sent ice racing through her spine.
"Bones."
God, ********, Bones. Kirk.
And they had to be the smart asses to leave last remarks too.
Bastards.
She didn't question why there was a rock in her hand, or the matter of everyone throwing things every which way. Her knees buckled, and for a moment, she thought about falling down and staying there until the gears in her mind clicked back to life. And then those "final words" came back to haunt her, to press and brush against her mind like ghosts to keep her going. Without thinking, her mind body clicked through the mechanical motions again, her heart in her throat, and everything burning, burning, burning. It was almost natural, sharp, and dangerous, the way her body moved into a position as though she were a pitcher at an all stars game. The rock sailed with every inch of agony that roused in her mind, every bitter n** and tear of anger and loneliness and shame that rattled her bones. Her vision blurred as she launched it at the one who'd launched one at her; not even recognizing the colors as Bones own.
Her vision blurred, and everything flashed in and out of clarity.
Everything will be fine, a voice murmured in her head, you're a hunter, not a lamb.
But she didn't believe the words. She didn't believe them at all.

The hooded figure watched the makeshift rockfight with interest. There were projectiles flying from all directions, though aimed at only two figures, to attack or defend them respectively. How very strange to see some grudges smoothed over and new ones formed. The figure hadn't been able to properly appreciate just how complex human behaviour was before - it was something else to watch it from the outside, as an observer. But still, the humans ran out of rocks soon enough. Theta Two, only a single hop away from the figure and Zeta Nine, came away with only a small bruise thanks to a quick defense. Zeta One wasn't so lucky. Three of the rocks were thrown in her direction, and only one of them a partial deflection of another. With the amount of force behind the hits, Zeta One was knocked from the island. The figure bit back the urge to start humming 'Another One Bites The Dust'. That wouldn't be very professional of him. The hood turned in Z9's direction. "Don't you feel lucky you'd already finished crossing?" It seemed that the early shots had been at the person closest to safe ground, T2. Whatever, the game continued on. (( ROUND FOUR begins! Very likely the last round, as most people are so close now. ))

The first rock hit her, bouncing off her helmet. She was half crouching from throwing hers, and stumbled backwards. Then, the second rock hit, and she moved further back.
It was an odd feeling, feeling her balance shift. She felt weightless for a moment, as if she was floating in air. She then felt gravity grab her around the middle and pull her off the rock.
She screamed and tried to grab the rock, but she was already too far gone. No no no, she couldn't die like this, she couldn't die, why why would she end up like this!? There was so much more she could do for her and her team. It wasn't supposed to end like this!
And then silence as Zeta One faded into the darkness.

It didn't matter now, what she did. She was one island away from finishing, but there was nothing at the other end other than to keep moving. There was no pendant, no Bones, no Kirk. She felt an inevitable sense of loss, but really, she'd only known them for minutes, hours at most. She felt silly and shamed, idiotic and lost. She didn't have any right feeling this way, she didn't know anything about those two past half baked conversations and trail rides through the dark. But the girl had watched both of them fall, each with their own terribly ******** up ending words. What were they in, some sort of crap-level melodramatic soap opera? What was she supposed to be, the heroine who grew teary eyed at the revelation that both of the men in her life were dead?
Oh god, please no.
That thought hardened the sharp ache of loss into resolution. She was still alive, she could still continue on with what they'd want to have done. She could still survive. It was mechanical again, the way her limbs snapped into motion and moved onto the ground. Only this time, it seemed as though the girl had picked up a stride that was almost deadly. It was as thrilling as a model on a runway, but as dangerous as a woman with five inch I-could-stab-your-eyes-out-with-these stiletto's and no fear of using them in the end. Feeling firm ground underneath her feet, Theta-two stalked a few feet, turning to look between Zeta Nine and the Reaper. Everything inside of her was smoldering and burnt, a rush of emotions that had felt so alive and cruel a few minutes ago. Now they were muted and dull. All of the brightest reds had drained into dark grays. She could hear her heart in her ears, feel the taste of loss and regret, shame and anger on her tongue. She could feel something shifting and changing in her gut; an acknowledgement that the world that the gas mask troopers had woken up to was all about tests and trials. Who had the colder heart, and which of them could break past their fears and their insecurities and do what they needed to to survive.
Finally, she tapped her hands along the front of her thighs, one hip cocking, head turning to the Reaper who had started this all. He wanted to sing Another One Bites the Dust. She was blasting something along the lines of Carry On My Wayward Son, and Eye of the Tiger. "So what now, boyo?" Her voice carried a caustic tune. "You gonna pat us on our back and hand the chica her prize and be on your way?" She laughed, the soft, sultry sound hazed and sharp. "Or are you gonna stick around and chat this time?" She stepped away from the chasm, not daring to look back. She could taste bitter shame in the back of her throat, but at least she was still alive. So now what? Well, she hardly knew. All the Theta could think to do was continue to move forward, and fight off death as long as she could, while staring it in the face.
She'd finished second this time. Next time she'd finish first.

A flurry of rocks, apology ...accepted? Eta II was unsure of what went on. One of them had fallen it seems, another had made it across.
Eh, whatever. He was so close now.
Eta II nodded to Delta 12. Then he proceeded to hop towards the finish line.

Two rocks slammed into Zeta One and she toppled over. Twelve frowned, but did not feel an overwhelming sadness. He had never even talked to her, but it was still disappointing to watch her disappear. Eta Two silently nodded to Twelve before he began to leave, hopping from one island to the next. Twelve briefly glanced behind him, but hurriedly looked forward and moved on. He had to move on and never look back.

Theta Six waved happily at Theta Two as her rock her help to deflect a bit force from the rock thrown at her teammate. Another seemed to have three rocks thrown at the poor thing and was knocked off their island completely. Theta Six shook her head, but was very happy it wasn't her. Unfortunately she had a long way to go and would be forced to take the short cuts.
She might very well be the next one to fall. Even still, it was do or die, so she step back and jumped.

(Theta 2 is taking the shortcut)
She made it across, but frowned deeply as she came across the shortcut. Everyone was so far ahead of her all she could do to catch up would be to try a shortcut. She was hoping against hope, that she would not fall, but knew she shouldn't think about it.
She quickly took a few steps back and took a running jump. "Please let me make it," she shouted in midair.
She realized that she might possibly fall short and reach out to try to grab a hold of the islands, her fingers catching but not getting any sort of hold. It was a scrabble but it was useless as she fell a frantic scream echoing out.

There was an expectant pause. The remaining players were catching their breath. Even the hooded figure was wondering what could go wrong this time, as things tended to do right about now.
... Nothing. Huh.
The hooded figure shrugged.
"Carry on," he advised.

Eta II saw that the reaper had given the carry on signal. Calmly, he hopped across the two island and reached the other side. Finally.
Eta II took a while to adjust himself to the firm, stable ground. He made it across. I made it across. he told himself. Still he remained silent, numb to any emotion of relief or happiness. He couldn't celebrate, rejoice, be glad that he was alright. Why was that?
"Eta III" He shot at the reaper. "Those who have fallen into the chasm - what of them?" he demanded.
He had a feeling he already knew the answer, but he didn't want to accept it. Why should he? It was a sick game.

He had only taken one step when the hooded figure signaled for the others to continue moving forward. Twelve warily eyed the stranger. Was something supposed to go horribly awry? His mind quickly flashed back to the past rounds and he grew nervous. Something was going to happen, and he needed to get off. Now. Twelve watched Eta Two jump off the final island and storm up to the figure, presumably to ask something. He shook his head. It was time to concentrate on crossing the chasm. Twelve leapt to the next island.

They were almost all here. The hooded figure couldn't help from huffing as he saw the one remaining figure still out on the islands. She was close, but still. "Always lagging behind, Delta XII," he called in exasperation. D12 may have felt something vaguely familiar about the figure's impatience, but it would be quickly overshadowed by completing the dangerous course. "Hurry on in. Things are about to get interesting."
The figure turned to face Eta II. "Those who fell? I guess we'll find out... shortly."
There were more important matters to deal with first. Something the hooded figure was sure that Zeta IX had been waiting on for some time now. Ah yes, what he'd inanely termed the 'awards ceremony' - trying to emulate the speech and tone of the original hooded figure could be irritating at times, but it was better than being his impatient, surly self. Better for the living to think that the figures were one and the same, or at least similarly crazy enough that they weren't human or only recent to their new posts.
Theta II earned a head tilt. She couldn't see the raised eyebrows under his hood, but they were there. She was labouring under more than one false assumption if she thought he would fill them in on what was happening. Geez, this was almost more trouble than it was worth. "We've all got our roles to play," the figure eventually said. "Yours is to pass this test - the island, not my little game - with less information than you'd like to have. My role isn't to answer questions."
No, it was to pass on his pendant to someone 'worthy'. And hope that he understood just what the others considered 'worthy' to be.
There were four survivors left - assuming D12 made it in without falling. Surely one of those was worthy of making it to the final day of the test. Raising his voice, he addressed the group.
"Give a big hand to Zeta IX, the first person to make it across the chasm. As such, I present you with your very own..." he whipped an object out from under his cloak, "medkit!"
He wanted to laugh at the stunned faces. Instead he enjoyed them quietly for moment, before saying, "What? I never said the first person won the pendant. Only that you had to make it to this side to be eligible."
Hmm, that was the kind of talk that would inspire a riot, if he wasn't careful. And this lot had been good enough to obey the rules and play the game from start to finish. Before they decided to turn on him, the figure added, "Don't worry, one of you certainly won it, I'm not that cruel. What you seem to have missed is that the aim of the game wasn't just survival. While you were making your way across the chasm... you were all being judged."
So, it all came down to... what had the figure been judging them on?
(( Syusaki, roll your way in, please. Others, feel free to have reaction posts. I'll do my next GM post after I sleep. As I promised earlier, rolls and how survivals/deaths worked will be explained after. ))
