I get made fun of for not reading quality books. What does it matter? I always thought that books were meant to be enjoyed, not a testament to being a bibliophilic snob.

yep, but I love reading, so I don't care. I don't usually like to tell people that I work at a library though, because they tend to laugh at me...I don't know why, they just do.

I have a friend who is as big as a reader as I am both bought the same book. He started laughing so hard when he saw that I had the same book that we got some weird looks, by some jocks & preps.

Alot of the time, out of all my friends back at home, I'm the only one who's a bibliophile. The most people who used to put me down thoough was when I worked in my bookshop, I had plenty of people come in and say (these were usually delinquints, mind you) 'Err, why do you want to bother reading?' or 'Reading is for poofs' etc etc. I had great delight in throwing them out....

My sister and her boyfriend think it's weird that I have a big shelf full of books , and want to start putting in more shelfs so I have room for new ones. Every time I buy a new book I get "OMG, Don't you already have enough books?!" Well, yeah, I have enough books to last me the next year in reading if I wanted it to, but I like to keep the books I've already read and love so I can read them again whenever I want. I like have a choice in what I read next as well. Other then the "Oh, I only have one book, I have to read it". haha. I get made fun of by my sister-in-law sometimes. She's a big fantasy book reader, and she always tells me that the fantasy books I like are stupid and horrible. Only one series we ever agreed upon being good. xd
In high school, my friends referred to me as the book-worm of the bunch. I always had my nose in a book at lunch and in study hall. xd

At the last high school I was at, people knew better than to make fun of me because I had a few friends that could cause serious damage. Then I moved....

Where I am now, lots of people read, but not nearly as much as I do. I would usually be asked what I was reading because most of the people here read romance novels, not what I read. Last year after I first arrived, I was reading a manga called The Kindaichi Case Files. It's a detective manga and it is VERY graphic and VERY bloody at points. I was reading it in my Psych class when a boy (who was the least literate person I've ever met) started to tease me for reading a comic. I turned to him and showed his a page with a decapitated body on it and he slowly backed away.

My psych teacher, who hated the kid because he would never shut up in class, applauded me and said I could read whenever I wanted in class, as long as I lent her that book. I got back it a week later....

Ah well, at least people don't bug me anymore!

Yes all the time people say things to me about reading but i don't care i normallysay i don't moan when you do something or i don't say stuff about what you like so shut your face haha!

Its not up to them to decide what i do and don't like hehe!

I have a habit now of blocking everything out now when im reading a book so i don't hear whats going on around me which is always good because i get really annoyed when i am trying to read and someone is talking to me.

I got a good ribbing about my book love from so-called friends not too long ago. Well, it's their loss, not mine. I have a better time with books than I do with them anyway.

From reading the comments here, I get the picture that we're all taunted at some point for our passion for books. I think almost every bookworm has been labelled at some stage in time. But it shows the the level of maturity in our peers isn't very high. Bookworms ROCK. smile

Eh, sometimes. It happened more often when I was younger, though.

Throughout 4-6th grade I was called a bookworm no big surprise there. THen some knothead started telling me i needed bookatrol the equivalent of nicotrol for books. At that time I was even reading between classes and walking with my nose in a book to each class. I also don't mind reading while I am in a car or bus which makes no sense to my husband who gets carsick. HaHa By high school most of my friends simply accepted it as one of my quirks that I always had a paperback on hand in my bag or purse. I even did it during college to pass time between classes or waiting for class to start.

Thankfully my friends aren't picky about my fanatism with books. They seem to find it very amusing and are guilty of being book fanatics themselves. But not at my level. With the rate I buy and read books, I'm a book cortesan!
But I do get strange and often horrible remarks from my family. Like Vladmir Nabakov's Lolita. I actually put it down because my brother kept asking me why I was reading a book about a phedophile! And that little rat couldn't even finish the first page of Harry Potter!

I've had that one too.. but from a friend not a teacher.

I used to get teased a little when I was younger, because I read books that were more advanced then the stuff other people were reading. That doesn't happen anymore, a lot of my friends read almost as much as I do now, and I can give recommendations.

It's also a convienent pastime to have at university, because if you are reading a book no one will bother you. At least if it seems like one that could be course related.

My brother will bug me sometimes, but not because of what I'm reading, more like because he is bored and simply wants to bug me.

The only time I've been seriously annoyed because someone started talking about my bookworm habits was at a french summer program I was at last year. The program wasn't as strict as the one I had been to before, but I just had it in my mind that if I was at a French Immersion program, it would make more sense to read a couple french novels instead of english ones. Other students in the program thought that was ridiculas because it wasn't necessary and they made a lot of jokes about it. But it was their loss, the books I read were really entertaining. heart
