"I can't explain the specifics. I can't even truly begin to understand them." They were emotional matters indeed, and while Luke's development in the area was proving greater than he was aware, he couldn't even begin to hazard a guess as to why Lucas was as caught up in his bitter memories as he was. "He won't trust anyone, even the trustworthy. The heart he wears on his sleeve is more of a mask. I believe you caught a glimpse of his true face earlier." It was a brief and shallow glimpse, but he knew for a fact that Claire had noticed the falter. "For all my protection, I can't heal wounds that already exist. I'm not even sure if they can be healed, but... I would appreciate any effort you can put towards the end."

She frowned slightly in thought as she tried to remember when she... ohh, when he went all serious-faced. And she gave him a spoon, of course. It was easier to gain an understanding of the matter now, and it seemed like typical bad experiences that happened no matter how much Luke tried to protect his other half - perhaps Luke didn't even know these had been bad when they happened..? No, he must. Right?
"I think I understand," she said slowly, nodding a bit. Definitely an emotional problem, and sadly Luke was extremely deficient in that department. "Physical wounds and emotional wounds are completely different. While physical ones usually heal up properly after the recovery period, emotional ones.." How to explain it, since he probably didn't understand why Lucas was so upset over things. She didn't even know what he was upset about, but supposedly that's what Luke wanted her to find out, and to help if at all possible. "Emotional wounds are like physical wounds that get infected and heal wrong, and they're a lot harder to fix. They heal superficially but that's all, and keep causing pain and problems long after if they're not fixed properly. But still, even those types of physical wounds can be fixed before they do any really permanent damage." Usually. "Emotional wounds... they leave permanent damage regardless, and they're usually very hard to heal and take a much longer time to heal. Years." She should know, too.
She shook her head slightly, brows furrowed, as if clearing her head of the roundabout way of explaining it. Hopefully it hadn't upset him too much for her to ramble on about it. "But aside from that, I'll try and help as much as possible. I don't know how much that will be, because in order to help Lucas he would need to tell me what's bothering him, and I'm not sure when, or if, he'd be willing to do that. But I'll certainly try, of course." Still, it was hard to imagine Lucas not being so goofy and happy. Was it really all just a mask, a face he wore for everyone else?

Luke patiently listened to the explanation, internalizing the information that was given. He frowned slightly. "Why should humans have such a terribly exploitable weakness? That makes no sense." It was like building the most amazing gun in the world and then forgetting to make bullets to go with it.
He nodded, "I would appreciate it. I apologize for involving you in this matter." He used the word 'apologize' to indicate regret, but it certainly wasn't regret over involving Claire. The fact that he couldn't resolve the issue on his own was a source of constant frustration.

A smile twitched at the corners of her lips, and she simply offered a shrug in response. "Humans are emotional creatures. Such thoughts and emotions make us human, or at least what that's all the people with fancy degrees say." Basically, it is what it is and there's no way to change it, so suck it up and deal with it.
"It's no problem," she said with a shake of her head. She'd been very curious about his expression earlier, at any rate, and now pretty much had the green light to do some investigating to figure out why. "Hopefully I can help somehow." Though she hadn't any idea how, since Lucas adamantly refused to even comment on his thoughts before.. hmm. This required some serious spoon-for-thoughts thinking.

He continued to frown, even as he resolved to suck it up and deal with it. There was no helping nature, no matter how incredibly inconvenient it was.
"Well... Thank you." He turned and continued to the car. It was something of a relief, some vague sense of peace of mind, and his expression would be replaced by that of Typical Lucas as he reached to pull open the door and seated himself at the wheel.

Oh, how incredibly inconvenient nature could be. She simply smiled when he thanked her, figuring that by the time she replied Lucas would already be back to normal, so she simply dropped it there. With a shiver she got in the car as well and closed the door quickly, snuggling into her coat to warm up as she pulled the seatbelt across her waist and mentally prepared herself for the boring ride through the desert back to the base.
