Jack merely sighed and grabbed the heaviest tool he can on his desk. "I know you wouldn't believe me, yet the proof is right here for you to see. This sword is one of those items. I've seen it work."
He cleared his desk of everything except the sword. "Step back Mit. This is something that will amaze you."
He swung the tool with all his force, and a sharp blue sparks flew out when they contacted. The hilt was smashed, with gears flying everywhere, and and a very faint smoke was raising up out of the blade.

Mit cried out, raising her hands to her face as she was bombarded with gears. Luckily, her long sleeves and fingerless gloves were enough to keep her from getting injured. She could barely breathe as she lowered her arms to her side, staring wide-eyed at the mutilated tool. She bent down slowly, hesitantly, and examined the blade.
Not even a scratch... she thought fearfully. Not even the slightest bit of damage... even my gun would have a dent after that. This is...
"My God..." Mit whispered, taking a step back. She pointed an accusing finger at Jack.
"Wh-what are you trying to do here?" she stammered. "You... you wanna use them, don't you. Use those horrible mutations, hybrids that go against everything I ever lived for. You're gonna try and get people to believe, aren't you? Aren't you??" she shrieked, near hysterical. This was bad. In fact, this was worse than bad. This was utterly horrifying, nightmarish, abhorrent, and grotesque to the worst extent. The entire Society, the Upper Tier, the Slums... everything would be thrown out of order if this got out into the open. Another war would erupt, more people would fall victim to guerilla attacks from the Kante, more people would die, chaos would ensue... Mit lurched forward and slammed her hands onto the table, her entire body shaking with fear, the trepidation obvious in her eyes, which were wet and on the brink of tears.
"Please, Jack..." she pleaded softly. "I know I may not know as much as you do, you know, with me being sixteen and all, and I'm sure you only have the best intentions with that thing... but I'm begging you not to let anyone see this. I'm begging you, Jack. I know enough to realize what danger you're putting everyone in. Everyone... including me."

Raising an eyebrow to how strang Mit acted. He grabbed her by her shoulders to keep her calm, and looked at her calmly in the eye. "Mit, calm down. You know me. I don't intend on anyone else seeing this... Because I can't stay here. When I was at the Professor, he nearly tried to kill me for this... whatever this is. I got lucky, and managed to trick him, but knowing him, he's already out looking for me."
Jack looked somberly at Mit, and turned to grab his bag. "I'm leaving today Mit. The sooner I'm out, the better. The Professor has friend in high and low places. The city isn't safe for me anymore." He grabbed Mit's gun, and a few tools, and started to get to work.
"Mit, ever since I helped you escape for your parents and those tracker bots, you're the closest thing to family I have. I don't want to see you get hurt, so I want you to stay behind. Hand me that gizmo you were holding when you got in please."

Mit's mood switched instantly from hysteria to confusion and sadness.
"You're... you're leaving?" she asked, handing him the small apparatus as he set to work on her gun. "You're leaving the city... forever?" Her voice was a bit shaky. What Jack had said about the family thing, how close they were... it was a mutual feeling that she reciprocated.
"Why don't you just come stay with me in the Slums?" she asked with a shaky smile. "You can fix my heater, and I have an extra room, too. In fact, I have the nicest treehouse in the area. Whaddaya say, huh?" She knew there was no point in asking, and her face fell. "If you leave, the Trackers will find me, and I'll have to go back home, Jack. And if I go, they're gonna make me tell them everything."
She sighed heavily, walking over to the window and looking out across the city. Her eyes drifted upwards and she saw the glimmering splendor of the Society, then back to the bustling streets below. This city... she had once stood on its peak, and now she scrounged through its garbage, hoping for a scrap of something work salvaging, for money, food...
"I don't wanna tell, Jack." she mumbled quietly, hugging herself. "Please... take me with you. I'm willing to put myself in danger if it means not having to go back... and staying with you..."

I've flown a million miles just to find a magic seed
A white flower with the power to bring life to me
You're so exotic my whole body fluttering
Constantly craving for a taste of your sticky sweet

Melina Nadine Larkspur

User Image Lina thought on that question for a moment. It wasn't too entirely hard to believe, but in a way it was. Most people saw Ryul as a lone wolf, so to speak. Not needing anyone to keep him company besides Kowe. Then again, every now and then, Lina would get the odd question or two from some other girl about him. What he liked, and stuff like that. When she figured that he didn't like her that way, she gave them short answers, but it appeared he always turned them down.

Now, she didn't exactly know why that was, and hadn't bothered to ask him before. Quite frankly, Lina had figured it was none of her business. Sometimes her mom would ask her if he had made his move yet. Lina would blush and say 'No'. Every single time, her mother would shake her head and reply with 'Either he's to thick to see what a good catch you are, or he's to shy to make a move..." With that, her mom would turn and walk off for a moment. She'd always come back as if nothing had happened, but Lina would still have the blush on her face.

She had been about to open her mouth and reply to his question when his lips met hers. That alone distracted her train of thought. Her eyes closed instantly, instinctively. However, just the feeling of his lips on hers wasn't enough. Lina parted her lips ever so slightly, wondering if he would take the hint to deepen the kiss..

It's astounding;
Time is fleeting;
Madness takes its toll.
But listen closely...
Not for very much longer.
I've got to keep control.

Kesi Nérine Tarn

User ImageKesi had arrived home, she was going to head to her home office to fiddle with the box of gears she had found. However, she walked through her front door to find her parents standing in her entryway. That wasn't good. She was twenty four years old and still knew that. Mom and Dad never showed up without warning unless it had something to do with bad news. "What's wrong..." She stated simply, wanting to get this meeting done and over with so she could experiment.

As they began to speak, she noted the concerned look on her father's face, and the appalled one on her mothers. Ah, this was about her whole fascination with the Steamers thing. They went on to explain that they had thought it was just a 'phase', but it had gone on long enough. They didn't want her going over to her grandfathers anymore because it was only encouraging her. "What?! You can't stop me...I'm an adult!" She nearly yelled. They continued, acting as if they hadn't heard her.

This next bit of info was the worst. They were sending her on a wilderness trip, sending her deep into the forest of the Kante. One of the Kante military force were going to accompany her, and they were going to try and squash this whole 'Steamer' obsession of hers. No, Kesi wouldn't stand for it. In the morning? That's when that guy was going to come for her. Well, she'd be long gone before then. Her parents no longer had a right to do this crap to her.

After an hour of hearing them rant and telling her to be ready in the morning, she gladly watched them leave her house. She locked the door, bolts, chains, and even shoved a dresser in front of the door. Once she was confident with the barricade, Kesi hurried to her room and pulled out her hiking pack. As soon as she got the bag unzipped, she began stuffing it with clothing, food, and any other necessary belongings. She'd leave around midnight. Where was she headed? Toward the very thing her parents were trying to get out of her life. The Steamers.

I remember doing the time-warp
Drinking those moments when
The Blackness would hit me
And the void would be calling...
Let's do the time-warp again.
Let's do the time-warp again.

Jack hugged Mit hard, and gently moved her side to side. "Mit... The outside world is a very dangerous place, full of beasts and thieves." He held her by her shoulders again and looked her hard in the eye, and smiled softly. "We are gonna need lots of supplies then if you are tagging along."
Jack patted her head, and grabbed the gizmo Mit was playing with not that long ago.
"It will be a long, hard road, so I need you to be strong for a bit." Jack said as he added the gizmo to the hilt of the gun. "I'm glad I thought this little thing too; it's a steam release. Whenever you shoot this thing, the recoil should be considerably decreased, and allow you to shoot with more accuracy." Jack finished installing the gizmo, and looked at Mit, giving her a little wink.

Mit gasped loudly, her face breaking into an immediate smile. "You mean it??" she asked incredulously. "You're really taking me with you??"
Cha-CHING! she thought, mentally pumping her fist. Guys always break under girl tears!
She virtually twirled over to where he had added the little anti-recoil gadget to her gun and scrutinized it.
"Hm..." she said. "I left most of my stuff at home, though, including Junebug. I think we'll have to stop by my place, first. Won't that be fun?" she added with a childish smirk. She picked up her gun and hoisted it back onto her shoulder.
"Right, then!" she said, lifting her hand to her forehead in a strange salute. "Time to be a guy again!"

User Image Kameko Hotaka

Hotaka walked slowly behind Ralf into the back part of their little 'shop'. This was in the Undercity district, only, they all, not together of course, lived in the Slums. She looked around, distracting herself from her thoughts. "Did you guys remodel?" She asked, sarcasm showing clearly in her voice.
Ralf shrugged. "Maybe rearranged a little." He looked around. "Still looks like crap to me though." He laughed.
Hotaka stopped, hands on her hips. "I don't know how you four survive." She shook her head jokingly.
She heard footsteps nearby. Hotaka turned to see that Johnny and Ricky had walked in.
Johnny was already walking toward her, a huge grin across his face. He embraced her in a huge bear hug.
Hotaka tried to laugh. "Can't... breathe...John...ny!" She shouted slightly.
He let go, everyone in the room was now laughing.

"Don't let looks fool you, moron."

Ryul took the hint and was about to deeped the kiss when he heard a knock on the greenhouse door behind him. He automatically tensed up and pulled away. He gave Lina an almost apologetic look before backing away. He walked over to the door and opened it, seeing his mother on the other side. He fought back a sigh. Perfect timing, he thought. In her hands was a potted plant. The plant looked like it was dying. Of course she'd go to Lina about it. Before either of them could move, Kowe shot past both of them and disappeared into the forest. She ignored the look that Ryul gave her and walked past him into the greenhouse. He closed the door and turned around, leaning against the door with his arms folded. If his mother had seen them kissing, she was doing a good job at hiding that she knew. "I hope I didn't interrupt anything, but my plant seemed to be dying and I couldn't think of anyone better to talk to about it then you Melina," she said, smiling.

Melina Nadine Larkspur

User Image Lina sighed as she heard a knock on the door. Reality had come calling. Personally, she wanted to ignore that fact, but before she could say anything, Ryul had gone to the door and answered it. Oh, it was his mother. Apparently Kowe did what she had felt like doing. Running away. That would be very convenient. Especially due to the fact that she wasn't entirely sure on what his mother thought of her.

It kinda worried her that his mother walked right past him without commenting on the look he was giving her. Ah, she could now see the reason for the visit. There lay a wilting, shriveled little plant in a pot in his mother's hands. Mrs. Samison came up to her, and she knew what was going to be asked of her. When Ryul's mother spoke, she instantly blushed. Crap. Dead give away that she did interrupt something. "Mrs. Samison, I've told you before that you can just call me Lina..." She reminded with a smile. "And, I'll be glad to help..." Her smile increased, and she gently lifted the pot from Mrs. Samison's hands and began examining it.

It was an island bush snapdragon plant. If taken care of properly, it could grow to be about four feet tall, and five feet across. The flowers that it would blossom would attract hummingbirds. Judging by the size of the plant and the size of the pot, there was something stunting the growth. There was also one common thing she could have done to make it wilt. "This plant needs a bigger pot...maybe even be put in the ground. Oh, and less water. This Bush Snapdragon plant is drought tolerant...less water would do it good."

That was her prognosis. She handed Mrs. Samison the plant back. "Give me a minute..." She said, taking off and heading to the back of her greenhouse to get Mrs. Samison a bigger pot. After rearranging her stash somewhat, she was able to walk back with a foot wide pot in her arms. "This might help, especially if you want to keep it on a porch for decoration...I also have some compost out behind the greenhouse that would be great soil for it."

User Image Emiko Kei

The village they resided in, outside and far from the Steamers city got even more news only a few months later. Some of the men from the city were coming to there village, armed.
That was when she began to worry about her life and remembered, or relized Emiko was there as well. She ran through the forest, Emiko beside her, looking for the 'safe shed'. They weren't the only ones to escape, but after only a little while, her mother stopped and began coughing up blood. Her mother was so weak and knew she wouldn't make it. Emiko's mother told her to keep running. When the hunters found her, she would at least delay them.
When Emiko found it, she ran inside, tears streaming down her cheeks. She locked the doors and sat in a corner, hugging her knees. She was all alone in a shed for what seemed like forever, but was no more than a week. Her clothes now nothing more than rags.
The men searching eventually found her, and instead of kill her, seeing as she was just a child, they took her back to the city, selling her as a slave. The person that purchased her also marked her. Each person owning slaves has their own mark, or tattoo.
If the slave tries to get rid of the mark by scratching at it or trying some other way to remove it, there is a poison within it that spreads quickly throughout the body, killing them. It is very painful. Emiko watched as one of the other slaves did that exact thing, scratching it, and they shrieked in pain for hours, no, days, right before her eyes.
When she was 12, four years after her parent's deaths, the one who owned her, sold her to someone else. She didn't care though. No life was in her eyes. She just sat in the corner of a builing, no expression on her face. The man who bought her, of course looked at her before his purchase. He walked toward her, crouching down in front of her. Emiko still stared blankly infront of her. She was covered in bruises and scrapes as well as small spots of blood. The man that had owned her first used her for much more than just cleaning the home he lived in.
The man looking at her lifted her chin to look at her face. It was obvious to him she had been beaten less than a day before. Though she was a mess, the man still bought her. The way she looked to anyone who glanced her way was starved, her hair tangled, her clothes still rags, and her feet bare. The one who purchased her actually promised her something as well:

The stranger led her from the city out into the forest. He held her hand to make sure she followed. When they approached a small building miles from the city, the man didn't stop. He continued to walk toward the building and stopped at the door. It was a one story home but was very large. The man, without entering, turned and knelt infront of her, holding her shoulders and looking her in the eye.
"Emiko, wasn't it?" He smiled at her.
She didn't reply.
He sighed, but kept his smile on his face. "I'm Jared. I hope you remember my name. What would you say to a deal, or promise?" He asked her.
Her eyes, getting some life back in them, looked at his with curiousity. "..." She still said nothing.
He chuckled. "What would you say to being my friend? I don't like the idea of slavery."
Emiko tilted her head to the side slightly, confused. No one had told her that before. "...friend?" She asked. Her voice sounded odd to her. She hadn't spoken in years.
He nodded. "I do need someone to help me out with a few things around my home, and was hoping you would agree to help me. I would like to help you recover from what has happened to you for as long as you've been with that man."
Emiko took a moment to think. Her voice was quiet and cautious. "Because you're my...friend?"
He nodded. "You may stay with me as long as you like. I would also like to show you something the man before hadn't noticed. You see, you have a gift, and I want to teach you how to use it wisely and with caution." His smile remained friendly.
Emiko looked at him like he was crazy at first, but then her eyes showed thankfulness. She nodded to him slowly. "Jared is...my friend." It wasn't a question, but a statement. She wasn't sure why, but to her, she felt she could trust him, though he was still a stranger to her.

Emiko opened her eyes slowly, small beams of light shinning onto her face. She blinked a few times, trying to remember where she was and even what year it was. She sat up. She was sitting on one of the branches of a large tree. She put one of her hands on her forhead.
Emiko sighed, mumbling words quickly. "Why did you leave, Jared?" She wondered. He was like a father to her, but had passed away when she was fourteen.
Looking around, Emiko pulled a leaf out of her hair then jumped out of the tree and onto the ground.

His mother smiled. "See, I knew it would be good to come to you," she said. "I want it to live as long as it can, so may I have some of this compost?" she asked. Ryul had to fight to stop from rolling his eyes. He was tempted to just leave these two to talk plants. As much as he didn't want to leave Lina now, he didn't want to be here when they get talking about plants and whatnot. He created a fireball and split it into six. The fireballs started to weave and spin, creating loops and spirals. He was hardly aware that he was doing it. None of the fireballs even got close to the plants in the greenhouse. The plants were safe.

User Image Lina smiled and nodded. "I'll go ahead and help you transplant it...So, here's a fair warning. It will be heavier to carry back, but since the roots have more room to grow, it will get bigger..." She explained. Lina led the way out the back door of her greenhouse. It was usually only used by her, as it wasn't very visible on the road. In fact, it was almost hidden by the edge of the forest.

Lina continued on her way to the compost box she kept out back, and she began filling up the the bigger pot with dirt. She continued until it was nearly full enough for the Bush Snapdragon. Lina sat the pot on the ground, took the plant back from Mrs. Samison, and she gently worked the plant from it's pot. Just as she had thought, the soil was way too moist for the drought friendly plant. Also, the roots were visible, and there were plenty of them. "Poor little plant. You wanted to grow bigger, didn't you..." She said quietly. Well, now it could grow bigger.

"There...It should fare better now. Just, cut back on the watering...Once or twice a week at the most.." She further instructed. Lina heaved the now heavy pot back up into her arms and walked back into the greenhouse. That's when she saw Ryul looking particularly bored. Lina grew concerned as she spotted the flames, but he was being cautious. She couldn't help but smirk at him. "So, here you go...It was nice seeing you again, Mrs. Samison." She said politely.

Then something crossed her mind. Mrs. Samison might want to know about her and Ryul being together. She'd find out eventually, but she wouldn't want his mom to hate her for keeping the secret from her when she was right there. So, she took a cautious glance over at Ryul before making the gut decision. "Mrs. Samison,...... I'm dating Ryul."

Ryul froze and the fire went out. he couldn't help glaring at Lina. "Is that so?" his mother said. She turned to Ryul. "It's about time Ryul. I was wondering if you'd ever make a move," she said, laughing lightly. This made Ryul want to bash his head on the greenhouse wall. "Yea, thanks mom," he said, clearly not happy. She turned to Lina. "I'm glad you told me dear, because if you hadn't I never would have known. I just wish you'd have told me earlier. It would have been nice to know before now," she said with a smile. Ryul hid his face in his hands. He couldn't believe this was happening. "No, mom, we didn't..." he started. Didn't what? How was he supposed to explain that they'd just decided this a few minutes ago? And why had Lina decided to tell her now? He wanted to take off like Kowe had done when his mom had first showed up. Kowe had been smart. Ryul should have followed suit.
