The first (living) green on the sands was nothing extraordinary; dark with some light touches around her tail, feet and wings. She ripped the shell of her egg apart and screamed a second time as soon as her feet hit the grass.

On the other end of the clutch, the Ugly Spots Egg had decided a bad time was as good a time as any to hatch. A blue nose poked through the top of the shell, the mouth opening and closing as if pleading for air. Though, what he really wanted was food.

The dragonet freed himself more patiently than his sister, but when he saw what was going on, he froze. Terrified, he sank down to lay beside the shells of his egg. Unlike his clutchmate, the noises he made were produced from fright.

Kaeyne tightened his grip on the basket of glows when the queen started to throw her own hissy fit. Seeing the large dragon quieted the nerves - the would tantrum, left his null in the sands somewhere. Instead, he simply held on to his basket and his partner, cold quiet eyes again on the clutch.

Two eggs hatched - semi hatched. A little leg, un moving. Dead green. Dead baby green. The first one to pop free did not move in any way and the second - she struck him as a tunnelsnake. Kaeyne watched the still limb instead, both tunneldragongreen and the scared blue only on the edges of his mind.

What if the dead egg had been his? Or worse, Adetsu's? Kaeyne pursed his lips and looked away then, to the snarling moving tunnel-dragon and her quiet brother. Neither of them interested him, the little girl as violent-seeming as he himself and a cowardly blue.

This was turning into a bloodbath. Back in his weyr, he could feel the heavily restrained Faladeth testing her bonds. Blood. Violence. Something in there that she could kill. She wanted it. He could feel her lust. Flesh rent by her claws. Hot blood in her mouth. Yes. Kill.

Gritting his teeth, X'nar forced her to settle; it was nigh on impossible that she'd actually snap the chains that held her, but very probable that she'd damage herself if she kept straining against them. Last thing he needed with the tunnelsnake problem taking, it would be fair to say, a fairly large turn for the worse was an injured beast. The white guard would be mopping the problem up, and he did not want to have to sit out because Faladeth had torn a muscle...

Things on the sands were getting interesting again; two shells cracked, but it looked like one of the dragons was either dead or at least too weak to move. The second one looked like a better specimen, looked pretty angry too. Nothing compared to the fury of a white, of course, but in the grand scheme of things that green still looked pretty damn pissed off...

Where had the tunnelsnake gone anyway?

Shards.

What he wouldn't give for a drink right now; a drink and his weaponry come to that, he felt naked and vulnerable without his whip, his big knife, and of course Faladeth herself.

Shifting restlessly from foot to foot, X'nar swept the hatching grounds with wary eyes; that damned thing wasn't going to catch him off guard, not in a month of blue moons...

Speaking of blues, one had just hatched. It didn't seem to sure of itself, though.

A blue! That was the egg that had made her feel hungry, wasn't it? Agh, shards, the poor thing did look frightened by what was going on around it. She hoped it at least had enough sense to call to its rider so the new pair could move off and get food before retreating to the safety of... of... Where was safe at the minute?

Shuddering as she imagined Impressing, only to have her new lifemate stolen away by the jaws of a huge tunnelsnake, Ash silently wished the blue and the green luck. Find your rider, and get moving. Anywhere had to be better than the middle of the hatching grounds, where the beast had come from in the first place.

Vessali was sure that the shudders running through him were vibrating up through the ground as the gold stomped her feet and made sure that the candidates were sharding wary of getting to close to her and hers again. Fairly sure, at least. He supposed his nerves could still be making muscles jump. He just wanted his hands to stop shaking.

And they did, mostly, when the eggs started to actually crack. The sight of that poor limp leg from the shell that had smelled so bad wasn't encouraging, but at least her sister had spirit. Not, mind, that too much spirit in a dragonet was necessarily a bad thing, but it was better than dead. Had to be.

And then there was the blue. A shy blue? Or a confused blue, maybe, but that was two dragons out of their shells and not yet charging at anyone. Maybe things were calming down. Vessali's heart still clipped along.

"Look," he murmured to Sammis. "Here we go."

"I'd put marks down she's going to bleed someone." Sammis promised, voicing his thoughts out loud, if quietly, to Vessali. "I wish they'd get moving though! That fardling snake is still out there!"

His mother probably would have boxed his ears for cursing so much, but then his mother, thankfully, couldn't hear him. She probably used worse language when she was working anyway, or that was what he told himself.

Maybe the furious green will eat the tunnelsnake. he thought, flashing a humorless smile at no one in particular. It might make her less angry anyway.

Dark eyes flicked between the two very different dragonets now currently fully hatched. Mairin was least concerned physically about the blue, he seemed content to hide amongst shell shards for the moment and wasn't likely to go running about searching for His in any sort of mad panic. She did worry about the fear evident in his eyes though and what might happen if he became too afraid of the situation at hand.

The little green female on the other hand was one to watch. She'd been quite aggressive in getting out of her egg and freedom seemed to have done nothing to sooth her spirits. Mairin reached up sub consciously to fiddle with the end of her braid as she continued to watch the pair eager to see where they would go and who they would choose.

Kala had tried to follow her friend, but in the end, she had moved more towards the eggs and had lost sight of Iafri. But now she made her way back to her friend, glow basket held tight. The death of a candidate shocked her, but she still felt excitement zinging through her veins, even more so when the first eggs hatched.

But....oh. Oh no....She stared at the limp green arm and frowned, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. But when the next green, a very angry green, hatched, she was enthralled again. And that blue! His eyes whirled in two seperate colors. She had never seen such a thing before.

Jerishude stared at the events that were unfolding, his usual grin slowly leaking back on to his face. He could only smile now because they were a bit safer with eggs hatching and being away from the gold. Still though the dead dragonet was not a good sign. Death for the first egg of the hatching was probably the worst thing yet.

Of course the angry green was amusing but not so much the cowardly blue. Hopefully things would get better sooner than later.

The blue and the green were as different as they were the same. One cried, one screamed, but both searched for Theirs with equal vigor. Had it been the blue where the green stood, they would have quickly been out one more hatchling.

The fiery dragonet did not take so kindly to the tunnelsnake popping up and dragging her down between another cluster of eggs. Over the madness, those candidates heard noises no one should ever heard a dragon make. They sounded like death if death had a voice.

Trying so hard not to harm many to save one, the queen pushed the eggs around to try and find the fighting, smaller dragon. Her whirling red eyes had missed the green being pulled away from the eggs, toward the Wingleaders and the Masters that had stayed put.

"You dragonriders can't do a sharding thing on your own!" Brambel complained. In spite of that, he grabbed hold of a Wingleader -- F'sey -- and charged forward, weapon in hand. "We're going to take care of this now!"

To avoid being accidentally crushed by one of the rolling eggs, the blue took off into the crowds.

Mine! Are you going to get me?!

...Woah. X'nar gritted his teeth as the angry little green was dragged away. The noises she made. Would she be alright? Her mother seemed to have lost sight of her, and was still searching among the unhatched eggs. The blue was on the move now, had he found his rider? He couldn't tell for sure from here, and his attention was being pulled away by concern for the feisty green. He wouldn't admit it of course, but it would break his heart to see the poor little thing torn apart before she had a chance to find her rider... It looked like Brambel and that wingleader (F'sey, right?) were off to deal with the tunnelsnake.

They could really use a white dragon or two to rip it up, but X'nar knew very well that in the end it would probably do more harm than good; Faladeth would shred a hatchling as soon as a tunnelsnake if he didn't keep a firm enough hold on her.

This time a little cry did escape her throat, and Ash found herself scurrying backwards. It was killing the green. It was killing the green! She was fighting though, shards she had spirit! Just out of her shell, without her rider, and still fighting! A spirit like that deserved to experience life. She wished she was either brave or stupid enough to rush forward and help, but she wasn't either of those, she was just stuck rooted to the spot like a sharding fool...

had the blue just Impressed? She barely dared spare him a glance. The Queen was searching for her little green daughter, but in the wrong place! Somebody had to do something! Ash clenched her hands into trembling fists and tried to make her legs speed her towards the battling green. They wouldn't take her though. They were set on keeping her in one piece, and not planning on letting her go anywhere just at the moment.

Bile rose in Mairin's throat when at the sound of the green dragonet's cries. The feisty thing was fighting for her life but Mairin doubted even with help on the way it was a fight the hatchling could win. The girl's hands balled into tight fists at her side as anger built inside her. This was so damned unfair, there was nothing almost anyone could do right now but watch and listen. No amount of physical strength or special training would do Mairin good in this situation.

That the gold was now actively carefully shoving the others eggs around was also distressing. For all the good it might do to reveal the fight, Mairin guessed it was going to result in more confused or angry hatchlings. Nothing seemed to want to go right tonight.

Well maybe one thing, the blue was on the move and seemed to know where he was headed.

Sammis gaped for a moment, trying to rationalize what was going on with the green, the horrible sounds she was making...

And then suddenly broke into motion. He shoved the glow basket blindly at Ves, suddenly having other things on his mind, and plowed forward as stubbornly as he could, not particularly concerned with who got hit by a elbow or knee as he made a beeline for the anxious, hungry blue.

"I'm coming!" He called out, which was about as clear as he evidently intended to be to anyone other than his intended target, the anxious, hungry blue, who's neck he threw his arms around as he skidded to his knees near the hatchling. "Come on, we have to get off the grounds!" He encouraged. He was pretty sure he'd just skinned his knee with the last slide, but he couldn't give a damn.

Your Tarth is hungry and it's scary out here! Tarth complained.

"There are tables with food, we just need to get away from the tunnel-snake."
